Most students hate their endless homework. The students from Class 2, Senior 2 of the High School Affiliated to Peking University certainly did before they published their own collection of English novels at home.
Their small book contains stories about a holy (神圣的) war, the happy life of a self-taught artist and the story of a laid-off worker who devoted his last breath to playing his beloved accordion (手風(fēng)琴). The book becomes an instant hit on campus. About 3,000 copies have been sold and the class is already working on the second volume.
"We're up to our ears in homework. Exercises and exams make us out of breath. But to do something creative and full of imagination is such a great achievement," said Yu Xiaoxiao, 16.
"I took the writing as an ordinary homework at the beginning, but after I finished the first part of my story, I could not help but let it flow," said Wang An, who wrote "Accordion".
Inspired by "Lord of the Rings", Jiang Lu wrote his story about magic wars between angels from the light and the dark side. "The main message of the story was to look at the balance of the world. Both dark and light angels fight with love as their weapons. I want to tell people that selfish love might bring hate," Jiang said.
"I was shocked by their work and felt so proud to be the editor of my students' book," said Nathaniel Timmermann, the oral English teacher at the school. Liu Xiuqin, an English teacher, started the project by asking students to write whatever was in their mind every week. "They have performed beyond expectation," Liu said. "They wrote interesting stories and their English has improved after they started to express their real minds."
"We never imagined that our homework would be so popular and profitable (盈利的). We sell the novels at five yuan, but many teachers pay more to encourage us," said Yuan Mengyao.

The plastic identification ( ID, 身份證) cards carded by all Chinese citizens over 16 are to be replaced with electronic cards from 2005.
The new cards, which most people will have by 2005, contain a microchip (微芯片) on which personal information is stored. This can be checked against databases (資料庫(kù)) kept by the government.
"The information will be locked into the card so that people won' t be able to use false identities," said Ren Tianbu, a security (安全) official in Shenyang.
China's present plastic identity cards were introduced 17 years ago, and a similar system is used by many other countries. However, the information shown on a card differs from nation to nation. Most ID cards show the holder' s name, sex, date of birth and photograph, as well as the card' s expiry (失效) date and number.
Germany, France and Spain all use ID cards, but there are some developed nations who dislike the idea. The US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Sweden and Britain are among those with no national ID card. However, some of the countries have ID cards for particular uses. For example, Australia and the United States use a driving licence (駕照) to identify people.
Identity cards are introduced for a variety of reasons. Race, politics and religion were often at the heart of older ID systems. In recent years, though, ID cards have been linked to national information databases, which form the basis of how a government manages a country.
The US, Britain and some other countries are considering a national ID system as a way of preventing possible terrorist attacks.
However, such plans have been .met with fierce (猛烈的) resistance by those who believe identity cards work against human rights and individual privacy (個(gè)人隱私) .
"ID cards make us suspects (可疑人員), not citizens," said UK human rights group Liberty.
63. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A. Only those Chinese citizens over 16 can have an ID card.
B. The former Chinese ID card was plastic and the new one will be an electronic one.

In a few years, you might be able to speak Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, and English -- and all at the same time. This sounds incredible, but Alex Waibel, a computer science professor at US' s Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Germany' s University of Karlsruhe, announced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier for people who speak different languages to understand each other.
One application, called Lecture Translation, can easily translate a speech from one language into another. Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary. Users also have to be trained how to use the programme.
Another prototype (雛形機(jī)) can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what language they speak. "It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you," Waibel said.
Prefer to read? So-called Translation Glasses transcribe (轉(zhuǎn)錄) the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal(液晶) display (LCD) screen.
Then there' s the Muscle Translator. Electrodes (電極) capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted (植入) in a person' s face, according to researchers.
During a demonstration (演示) held last Thursday in CMU' s Pittsburgh campus, a Chinese student named Stan Jou had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks, neck and throat. Then he mouthed -- without speaking aloud -- a few words in Mandarin(普通話) to the audience. A few seconds later, the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish: "Let me introduce our new prototype".
This particular gadget (器械), when fully developed, might allow anyone to speak in any number of languages or, as Waibel put it, "to switch your mouth to a foreign language". "The idea behind the university' s prototypes is to create 'good enough' bridges for cross-cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world," Waibel said.
With spontaneous (自發(fā)的) translators, foreign drivers in Germany could listen to traffic warnings on the radio, tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people, and leaders of different countries could have secret talks without any interpreters there.
67. What does the underlined word "simultaneous" mean in the third paragraph?
A. 同時(shí)的 B. 高效的 C. 昂貴的 D. 多功能的
68. What kind of prototype did the Chinese student named Stan Jou try?
A. Lecture Translation.
B. Translation Glasses.
C. Muscle Translator.

69. What is the purpose of inventing the translators?
A. To help students to learn English.
B. To help people to watch foreign TV programs.

70. What is the best title of this text?
A. Speak different languages at the same time?

As the college entrance exam draws near, many Senior 3 students begin to feel worried. . Your score won’t have the final say in your future career, according to a recent survey.
China’s first report that is about lives of the top students getting the highest score on past national college entrance exams came out last Monday. It finds that not all of them have become winners in college and career.
“Most of the successful career men weren’t the best of their classes,” said the report. “However, the most important thing is that they should have creativity and the courage for exploration.”
The National College Entrance Exam was first held in 1977. Thirty years later, the report is expected to help Senior 3 students to decide on their university choices rationally (理性地). A group of experts spent eight months covering every part of China except Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and researching into the lives of the top students.
They found that among all the 560 top scorers from 1999 ? 2006, girls are leading boys with a narrow majority, accounting for about 50.27 percent. They have a bigger majority in the number of art majors, at 63 percent. But among those science majors, boys take the lead with 64.78 percent.
However, experts are worried by the fact that the majors the top scorers chose are very limited. Four out of five top students went to popular majors, like economic management and computer science. But other majors closely related to social development, like medicine and astronomy, failed to attract any of the very best.
“Most of the students’ choices were based on a desire for fame and wealth, instead of their interest in the subject. That would slim their chances for career success, as well as undermine (破壞) the hopes of our country,” said Cai Yanhou, a professor with Central South University.
