故填be chosen

4

故填When/As。

6

根據(jù)上文they smiled and可知此處應(yīng)用一般過去時(shí)。故填pointed

7

結(jié)合句意表示“出發(fā)去做某事”短語為set out to do sth.,后跟不定式做目的狀語。故填to find。

8

故填on

During the winter of 1986 I was working in construction near OaklandCalifornia. It is not unusual for construction workers’hands to become very painful during winter after working with concrete, wet woodmud, etc. My hands were no exception that year. They were actually cracking(龜裂)open at the joints in the fingers and thumbs. So I was always conplaining about my hurting hands. I often wondered when my cracked hands would not be painful.

Stopping work because of hurting hands is simply not possible in the construction industry. You grit your teeth(咬緊牙關(guān)),keep working and finish the job—but do further damage to your hands in the process. The only break occurs on weekends. My co-workers and I used to comfort each other almost every day. The pain is similar to that of“paper cuts”occurring many times an hour.

One morning I left for work at 500 a. m. to pour concrete and pulled into a gas station to fuel up. As I got out of my truck,I noticed a newspaper delivery van(有篷貨車)and the driver struggling with bales(大捆)of daily newspapers. I took a second look and noticed that the man was born with arms that ended halfway down each forearm. I was amazed to see him doing a job that would otherwise require a very physically gifted person. Stillhe was somewhat struggling with the large bales because his arms simply weren’t long enough to carry these bales. Instead he had to“pinch”the bales and lift them with his short and thick arms. Then I found he had difficulty tying his shoes although he had tried many times. I wondered how I could give him some help.

Professor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed an artificially intelligent teaching assistant to help handle the enormous number of student questions in the online class, Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence. Professor Goel already had eight teaching assistants, but that wasn’t enough to deal with the overwhelming number of daily questions from students.

Many students drop out of online courses because of the lack of teaching support. When students feel ignored or confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to taper off. Professor Goel decided to do something to improve this situation and his solution was to create a virtual assistant named Jill Watson.

Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn’t too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all the 40,000 questions that had ever been asked since the class was launched. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustments and sufficient time, Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with the virtual assistant and couldn’t tell it apart from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.

The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all the questions posed by students on the online forum. Professor Goel has a much rosier outlook on the future of artificial intelligence.

C.Her performance was remarkable all the way.

D.Her true identity was still a secret to students.

4What’s the main idea of the text?

A.A robot gives an online course.

B.Virtual assistant is getting popular in school.

C.Robots will replace humans in online classes.

It was raining hardly outside, which made it difficult for me to go home for lunch. Just as I was wondering what I should eat at noon, I saw a familiar figure passed by our classroom. I rushed out and found it was my mother, already in fifties, which brought me lunch in spite of the heavy rain. In China, many parents make great sacrifices for our children. But what had the children done in return? All too often, most children just take it for granted that their parent should serve for them unconditionally. My dear mum or dad, thank you very much for bringing me up. How shall I do for you?
