How are you?Today I've got a wonderful news to tell you.I have admitted to Berkely school in California.More than 3,000 students took exams for it,but only a few was chosen and I was one of them. Therefore,my parents are not happy about it.They are strong against me going there. They say it is too far away that they will not see me for a whole year and they are afraid that we will feel homesick. They can't imagine so young a girl like me live alone. They advise me to choose a university near my home instead. Then I would be able to continue living with them. How can I persuade them to accept the fact what I have grown up?
Yours Faithfully,
Jane Blair

【題目】Let's face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler.
The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.
While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.
Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all. “We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,” said Rogers.
So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate(彌補) for the missing calories.
A related study found some sweeteners (甜味劑) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. “Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,” said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas. “They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”

One sentence from the news in Washington has remained in my mind since a trip last summer: “When you see people run against the crowd escaping 【1】 the danger, they are 【2】 (probable) firefighters, police or journalists.”
I think this is most true for the firefighters. Whenever and wherever 【3】 (disaster) happen — 9/11 Attacks in New York 14 years ago or the explosion in Tianjin on Wednesday night — it is always the firefighters 【4】 take the lead to run to the very center, saving lives by 【5】 (risk) their own. I cried today near the explosion site, not because of the smoke from the ongoing fire 【6】 because of a short message a firefighter sent to a trusted friend that went viral online. It reads, “If I cannot make it, my father is 【7】 (you) father; and please remember 【8】 (sweep) my mother’s tomb.” I was thrilled later to learn that he did make it.
“Everyone knows it’s 【9】 (danger) to be a firefighter. But he has always liked it and has done it for 12 years,” his father said. “He survived this time, but no one knows what 【10】 (happen) next time.”

My soccer coach retired in last week. I wanted to do anything special for him at his retirement party. My mum makes the better biscuits in the world, so I decide to ask her for help. Mum taught me some basic step of baking. I insisted on doing most of the baking myself. I thought the biscuits were really well. My only mistake was that I dropped some on the floor after I was packing them up.
At a party, my coach, with a biscuit in his mouth, asked surprisingly who made them and joked, “I might have to retire again next year just get some more of these biscuits.”
My favorite picture at the party is of my coach and me enjoy the biscuits with happy laughter!
