It was certain that Earhart would attempt a round-the-world flight and she left Miami,USA on June 1,1937.Aft er stopping in South America,Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, she arrived in New Guinea,an island in the southwest Pacific Ocean,on June 29.She left on July 27,but while she was crossing the Pacific, contact (聯(lián)系) was lost. The US government spent  4 million looking for her,but she was never found.
Earhart published two books about her flying experiences:20 H ours 40 Minutes and The Fun of It,but she went missing before her thi rd book was published. She was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Congress and the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honour by the French government.

15.Dear Editor,
Recent reports have indicated an additional 1,400Marines(海軍陸戰(zhàn)隊(duì))are being sent to Afghanistan in the coming weeks.This means it costs over $1million annually on the ground over there.I do place a higher level of blame on the policymakers who send soldiers off to kill and be killed in the field.I think the human race needs to think more about killing.
One needs to do the introspection:"Are these wars JUST?"I believe that all of our wars since 1945have been illegal,under international law as well.I suggest that all your readers examine their conscience as it relates to the matter of making war.The fact that many soldiers are motivated by a strong sense of duty does not give them some unqualified(絕對的) moral right to support these wars or any other.It's responsible for all the troops,and the entire population,to determine whether the Afghan or Iraq wars are in accordance with(符合) the development of the state.
I wish someone would give me one or more logical reasons why we are still fighting in Afghanistan and what our goals are.I certainly don't understand it and neither do many who are more knowledgeable than I.
Outsiders have tried unsuccessfully for centuries to conquer Afghanistan,and we seem to be no more successful.We are trying to develop a stable central government,but the country is badly divided into ethnic and tribal groups,and the current government is corrupt(腐敗的).Moreover,we are apparently regarded as undesirable occupiers by many of its people,most notably(尤其) the Taliban(塔利班).
If we are to continue spending billions every year in Afghanistan and killing hundreds of our people and many of theirs, our government must provide us with a reasonable  explanation of why we are doing so and what we can expect to accomplish.

D.they are performing their duty as a resident

13.You never see him,but they're with you every time you fly.They record where you are going,how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally.Their ability to withstand almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic book.They're known as the black box.
When planes fall from the sky,as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to Comoros Islands in the India Ocean June 30,2009,the black box is the best bet for identifying what went wrong.So when a French submarine (潛水艇) detected the device's homing signal five days later,the discovery marked a huge step toward determining the cause of a tragedy in which 152passengers were killed.
In 1958,Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction.That was the first model for a black box,which became a requirement on all U.S.commercial flights by 1960.Early models often failed to withstand crashes,however,so in 1965the device was completely redesigned and moved to the rear of the plane-the area least subject to impact-from its original position in the landing wells (起落架艙).The same year,the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes,which were never actually black,be painted orange or yellow to aid visibility.
Modern airplanes have two black boxes:a voice recorder,which tracks pilots'conversations,and a flight-data recorder,which monitors fuel levels,engine noises and other operating functions that help investigators reconstruct the aircraft's final moments.Placed in an insulated (隔絕的) case and surrounded by a quarter-inch-thick panels of stainless steel,the boxes can withstand massive force and temperatures up to 2,000℉.When submerged,they're also able to emit signals from depths of 20,000ft.Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447,which crashed near Brazil on June 1,2009,are in water nearly that deep,but statistics say they're still likely to turn up.In the approximately 20deep-sea crashes over the past 30years,only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.

24.What information could be found from the black box on the Yemeni airliner?A
A.Data for analyzing the cause of the crash.
B.The total number of passengers on board.
C.The scene of the crash and extent of the damage.
D.Homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash.
25.Why was the black box redesigned in 1965?C
A.New materials became available by that time.
B.Too much space was needed for its installation.
C.The early models often got damaged in the crash.
D.The early models didn't provide the needed data.
26.Why did the Federal Aviation Authority require the black boxes be painted orange or yellowC?
A.To distinguish them from the colour of the plane.
B.To caution people to handle them with care.
C.To make them easily identifiable.
D.To conform to international standards.
27.What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A
A.There is still a good chance of their being recovered.
B.There is an urgent need for them to be reconstructed.
C.They have stopped sending homing signals.
D.They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.

20.A simple flower made headlines in the British press last week.How could that be?British Prime Minister David Cameron and his ministers were attending a reception(招待會)hosted by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.They insisted on wearing poppies (罌粟花) in their buttonholes.
What's wrong with that?
According to the Global Times,Chinese officials had clearly asked the UK delegation not to wear poppies.The British said that poppies meant a great deal to them on that day and they would wear them all the same.
So what's the importance of the poppy? It's a flower which has different cultural and symbolic meanings for British and Chinese people.
From the Chinese point of view,the poppy is a symbol of China's humiliation(恥辱) at the hands of European powers in the Opium Wars(鴉片戰(zhàn)爭) of the 19th century.Britain forced China to open the borders to trade-including in the opium-which was made from poppies grown in India.
Yet from the British viewpoint the poppy is a reminder of the killing during World WarⅠ.Red poppies grew on the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium where many thousands of British soldiers died or were buried.Since then,Poppy Day (November 11 ) has become a time in the UK to wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of British soldiers and civilians in times of war.
So you can see that the poppy sets off strong feelings in the hearts of Chinese and British people for different reasons.And it makes sense for us to try to understand each other's standpoint.
Of course cultural differences can also be interesting and funny.And what one nation thinks is an acceptable gift may be viewed differently by their guest from overseas.US President Barack Obama gave a gift of an iPod to Britain's Queen-a dull person with no interest in music.Obama also presented Gordon Brown with a fine selection of American movies.But they were in US format and impossible to play on British DVD players.
Many countries have diplomats(外交官)stationed overseas.Diplomats provide information and advice to their governments back home.However,sometimes it would seem that even diplomats can overlook the cultural importance of a small flower.
29.British Prime Minister David Cameron probably attended a reception in Beijing onB.
A.October 1
B.November 11
C.December 31
D.January 1
30.The poppy reminds the Chinese ofA.
A.the shame caused by European countries in the 19th century
B.the British soldiers who were killed and buried during World WarⅠ
C.the Chinese soldiers killed during World WarⅡ
D.the suffering caused by Britain during World WarⅠ
31.The diplomatic problem in Beijing is mainly caused byC.
A.the translation mistake
B.the language difference
C.the cultural difference
D.the different lifestyle
32.We can infer thatD.
A.Britain's Queen is not interested in art

10.Living abroad to study can certainly be an interesting experience but is that alone a good enough reason for spending years far away from home?To make the experience truly worthwhile,there has to be a goal behind the decision to study abroad.This may be a wish to perfect language skills in a foreign language environment,or a clever move in your career development.You must also consider the costs,not just of living and studying abroad,but of applying.Most universities now charge application fees for international students.
If after considering these points you are sure that you want to apply to study abroad,your next step is to choose the right programme of studies.Research your choices and select carefully.You must do your homework well.Most universities have information online but you can also email and ask them to send you more details.You can find a lot of information on school ranking from education websites.But read carefully.Different universities emphasize different strengths.Don't just think about the university's reputation (名聲); look for the most suitable for your goals.

Money is another important consideration.Some scholarships are provided by governments,others by schools and colleges.This information,again,can be found on the Internet.If you find a scholarship that is suitable for you,follow the application procedure carefully; the earlier you apply,the better your chance of getting it.

How does a doctor recognize the point in time when he is finally a"surgeon"?As my year as chief resident (進(jìn)修醫(yī)生) drew to a close,I asked myself this question on more than one occasion.
The answer,I concluded,was(50)D.When you can say to yourself,"There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently (勝任地),treat just (51)B or better than any other surgeon"--then,and not until then,you are indeed a surgeon.I was (52)D that point.

15.There is a definite possibility that the climate of the world may be changing. Some scientists imagine that this could even mean the beginning of another ice age.The effects of such a change in climate on the human population of the world would be amazing.
Recent research suggests that the general warming trend of the past hundred years or so may be coming to an end.During the past ten years, meteorologists(氣象學(xué)家)tell us the average temperature of the earth has dropped about one degree Fahrenheit. This does not seem like much, but it could have effects on wind and rain patterns which influence the overall weather picture. If these patterns change a lot,it could mean that certain regions of the world may continue to have long droughts(干旱)while others will possibly suffer from widespread flooding.
What regulates the climate is not exactly known.Meteorologists believe that clouds may be an important factor in regulating the amount of solar(太陽的)heat held by the earth, which in turn determines the temperature of the planet.Another possibility is that man's industrial and agricultural methods may be affecting the natural weather patterns. However, the weather is not understood well enough for scientists to say for certain what is happening to the climate and what side effects this will actually have on the world's population.
