And he also points out the positive and negative aspect for having it. American consumers are mostly likely to use credit cards. However, the use of credit cards are expanding into almost every country in world. The key point making by the author is that users should pay for the amount in full when a bill is sent from the credit card company. This protected all the advantages and avoids all the disadvantages of using credit cards.

⑴ We all have weaknesses and strengths, no matter who we are. Sometime the weaknesses seem to outweigh the strengths and sometimes it’s the other way around. Some people get sick easily. Some struggle to manage their money properly. Some people are hopeless communicators and struggle with relationships.

 (2) Many people accept it as just bad luck, but not everyone. Some people facing huge limitations still manage to achieve surprising things. They rise above their weaknesses and do not allow them to limit their possibilities.

 (3) I attended a school prize-giving ceremony not so long ago and the guest speaker was Andrew Becroft, who had a severe stutter (口吃) as a child. Instead of allowing this to limit him, he chose to work hard to overcome it. He is now the Principal Youth Court Judge for New Zealand. Not only did he become successful, but he did so in a profession where he had to speak in front of others regularly.

 (4) Lots of people face far more significant limitations than you do. They may be missing limbs or are born into extreme poverty. But no matter what the limitation is, you will always find people who have overcome it. Brett Eastburn has no arms or legs and yet is an inspirational speaker and also a very good wrestler. Ringo Starr, drummer for the Beatles, came from a very poor background. He was constantly plagued with illness as a child and spent large amounts of time in hospital. Mark Inglis lost both of his legs below the knees in a mountaineering accident, but has since climbed Mt Everest.

 (5) Most of us will never have to face the challenges these people faced. Yet most of us will never achieve to the degree that these people have either, unless we choose to. If Mark Inglis can climb the highest mountain in the world without legs,___________________?

Global warming may or may not be the great environmental crisis of the 21st century, but-regardless of whether it is or isn't-we won't do much about it.

Al Gore calls global warming an “inconvenient truth", as if merely recognizing it could put us on a path to a solution. But the real truth is that we don't know enough to relieve global warming, and-without major technological breakthroughs-we can't do much about it.

From 2003 to 2050, the world's population is projected to grow from 6.4 billion to 9.1 billion, a 42% increase. If energy use per person and technology remain the same, total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mainly, C02) will be 42% higher in 2050. But that's too low, because societies that grow richer use more energy. We need economic growth unless we condemn the world's poor to their present poverty and freeze everyone else's living standards. With modest growth, energy use and greenhouse emissions more than double by 2050.

No government will adopt strict restrictions on economic growth and personal freedom(limits on electricity usage, driving and travel) that might cut back global warming. Still, politicians want to show they're "doing something". Consider the Kyoto Protocol (京都議定書(shū)). It allowed countries that joined to punish those that didn't. But it hasn't reduced C02 emissions (up about 25% since 1990), and many signatories (簽字國(guó) )didn't adopt tough enough policies to hit their 2008-2012targets.

The practical conclusion is that if global warming is a potential disaster, the only solution is new technology. Only an aggressive research and development program might find ways of breaking our dependence on fossil fuels or dealing with it.

The trouble with the global warming debate is that it has become a moral problem when it's really an engineering one. The inconvenient truth is that if we don’t solve the engineering problem, we’re helpless.

47. According to the author's understanding, what is Al Gore's view on global warming?

A. It is a reality both people and politicians are unaware of.

B. It is a phenomenon that causes us many inconveniences.

C. It is a problem that can be solved once it is recognized.

D. It is an area we actually have little knowledge about.

48. Greenhouse emissions will more than double by 2050 because of___________

A. economic growth

B. wasteful use of energy

C. the widening gap between the rich and poor

D. the rapid advances of science and technology

49. The author believes that, since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol,__________

A. politicians have started to do something to better the situation

B. few nations have adopted real tough measures to limit energy use

C. reductions in energy consumption have greatly cut back global warming

D. international cooperation has contributed to solving environmental problems

50. What is the message the author intends to convey?

A. Global warming is more of a moral issue than a practical one.

B. The final solution to global arming lies in new technology.

C. The debate over global warming will lead to technological breakthroughs.

D. People have to give up certain material comforts to stop global warming.

Canadian scientists have found that the more emotional or mental challenges a person faces in a day, the less determined they become to work out physically.

However, the findings should not stop us from keeping fit. Experts believe that willpower(意志力) is like a muscle, and needs to be exercised to help one avoid the temptation(誘惑) spending a night on the couch instead.

Kathleen Martin-Ginis, a professor of kinesiology-the science of movement—who led the study, says everyone has a limited amount of willpower, and that it will be reduced by stress. Miss Martin-Ginis, of Canada's McMaster University, explains," Cognitive(認(rèn)知的) tasks, as well as tasks such as regulating one's emotions, can reduce one's capacity to force oneself to exercise. "

Her team of scientists performed a so-called "Stroop" test on volunteers to reach their conclusions. The experiment involved showing participants words associated with colors but printed in different colors-for example, the word "blue" written in red ink Participants were divided into two groups. One group was asked to name the color of the ink, instead to say the printed word, while the other wasn't Martin-Girus says, "After we used this cognitive task to use up their self-regulatory capacity, the participants didn't exercise as hard as those who had not performed the task " The more people concentrated on the cognitive task, the more likely they were to skip exercise sessions(活動(dòng)時(shí)間) over the next eight week You only have so much willpower.

However, there are ways to strengthen willpower. The study found the listening to music before going to the gym can help, as well as making a commitment to work out with friends. It also concluded that willpower can be stretched by constant cake, or forcing oneself to study an extra hour each night

Martin- Ginis adds," There are strategies people can use to help revitalize(使恢復(fù)活動(dòng)) themselves after they've used up their self-regulation Willpower is like a muscle: it needs to be used to stay strong. "

43. According to the experts, human willpower      .

A. can be exercised through muscle movement

B. can regulate itself to resist temptations

C. is weakened by stressful cognitive or emotional tasks

D. is reduced by lack of physical exercise

44. We learn from Paragraph 4 that the experiment__________

A. made use of the Stroop test

B. asked one group of participants to name the words

C. required researchers to write the word "blue" in red ink to make it easily recognizable

D. showed that those who hadn't performed the task were smarter than those who had

45. All the following are ways to strengthen one's willpower EXCEPT

A. listening to music before doing exercise

B. promising to work out with friends

C. training oneself repeatedly to resist temptations

D. forcing oneself to do the same thing each day

46. What can we infer from the passage? ,

A. Will power can be challenged to become powerful.

B. McMaster University is famous for its kinesiology.

C. Effective ways to resist temptations have been found

D. The study has an impact on the science of movement

I am especially interested in eco-friendly cars.  Would you please give me some help?

-John Lily

John Lily,

More and more automobile companies are taking measures to create cars that do less harm to the planet. Here are some of the top green cars this year.

Tesla Roadster

This is an electric sports car. You can travel 220 miles before recharging the battery. The only problem? It will cost you $ 100 000. So, until you win the lottery or happen to find a box of gold at the end of a rainbow, let's move on to the more reasonable choices.

Aptera 2e

This electric car is much more affordable than the Tesla Roadster, with a starting price of around $25 000. Its electric motor runs 100 miles per charge. Unfortunately, it is currently only available in California through a complex booking process.

Toyota Prius

At 51 miles per gallon in the city and 48 0n the highway, the Toyota Prius is one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the world  With an annual C02 rating of 1 968 kilograms, this car holds the first place on MSN's list of the Least Polluting Vehicles of 2009. It also has other eco-friendly features like a solar-powered ventilation(通風(fēng)) system.

Honda Civic Hybrid(混合動(dòng)力車(chē))

The Honda Civic Hybrid is competitive with the Toyota Prius when it comes to fuel efficiency.  It gets 40 miles per gallon in the city and 45 0n the highway. It also has the second-lowest annual CO2 figure, releasing 2 160 kilograms in a year.

Honda Insight Hybrid

With a base price of just $20 000, the Honda Insight Hybrid is the least expensive Hybrid on the market today. Coming just after the Honda Civic and Toyota Prius in terms of pollution, this fuel-efficient vehicle gets 40 miles per gallon in the city and 43 0n the highway:

Besides all these, Toyota Camry Hybrid is also a good choice.

William

I believe that animals possess greater intelligence than most people think. But plants? I've never considered the possibility of plant intelligence.  The idea seems absurd .

Yet I've had friends argue that plant intelligence might exist. "What are the differences between plants and animals?" they ask, and then they argue about certain species that seem to share the intelligence of both plants and animals.

New research suggests that plants communicate via “networks". Plant communication is not idea, and cannot indicate that it is a kind of intelligence, but it is still interesting.

Recent research from Vidi researcher Josef Stuefer at the Radboud University Nijmegen shows that plants have their own chat systems that they can use to warn each other. Therefore plants are not boring and passive organisms that just stand there waiting to be cut down or eaten up. Many plants form internal communication networks and are able to exchange information networks and are able to exchange information efficiently.

Many herbal plants such as strawberries and clovers(蘭葉草) naturally form networks. Individual plants remain connected with each other for a certain period of time by means of runners (plant stems that grow along the ground and put down roots to form new plants). These connections enable the plants to share information with each other via internal channels. They are therefore very similar to computer networks. But what do plants chat to each other about?

Recently Stuefer and hus colleagues were the first to prove that clover plants warn each other via the network links if danger is nearby. If one of the plants is attacked by caterpillars(毛蟲(chóng)) , the other members of the network are warned via an internal signal. Once warned the intact(完好無(wú)損的) plants strengthen their chemical and mechanicaicl(機(jī)體的)resistance so that they are less attractive to advancing  caterpillars. Thanks to this early warning system, the plants can stay one step ahead of their attackers. The research has shown that this significantly limits the damage to the plants.

Again, I don't believe this reflects intelligence,

36. Clover plants warn each other when danger is nearby by____________

A. making sounds                                  B. releasing chemicals

C. strengthening mechanical resistance                 D. sending internal signals

37. The author's attitude towards plant intelligence is___________

A. unconcerned            B. doubtful                  C. positive             D. hopeful.

38. What's the best title for the passage?
