【題目】Sputnik was the first artificial satellite. It can be described as an aluminium ball with diameter (直徑) of 58 centimetres and weighing 83.6 kilograms, equipped with instruments to measure the temperature and the density (密度) of the atmosphere.Sputnik was launched into orbit around the Earth by the former Soviet Union on 4 October, 1957.Since then, hundreds of artificial satellites have been launched, each with a different purpose.

Some artificial satellites are used for telecommunications, which enable us to make telephone calls to any part of the world, to see live television transmissions and to communicate via the Internet.Other artificial satellites are used for navigation (導(dǎo)航), so that people on Earth can know at any moment the position of an object, within a few metres.Others are weather satellites, launched to observe the state of the atmosphere and to follow the movement of the clouds as they gather. There are also military satellites, for the purpose of gathering information on the weapons and the troops in countries which may be unfriendly and also to indicate the launch of a missile (導(dǎo)彈).

Each satellite has its own orbit which is selected according to its purpose.Communications satellites, for example, have a geostationary (與地球相對(duì)同步的) orbit. That is an orbit which turns at the same speed as the turning round of the Earth.Satellites used for weather forecasting pass over the two poles of the Earth.By doing so, a different part of the Earth’s surface is viewed on each successive orbit. All artificial satellites get the energy they need by huge solar panels which extend like wings. These are therefore controlled in such a way that they are always turned toward the Sun.

1The first manmade satellite was sent into space to ________.

A. do research on weather

B. communicate

C. show directions

D. broadcast TV programs

2Which kind of satellites has the same turning speed as the earth according to the passage?

A. Military satellites.

B. Weather satellites.

C. Satellites for communicating.

D. Experiment satellites.

3What’s the same character all satellites share?

A. Circling the earth at the same speed.

B. Providing useful information with the same purpose.

C. Having the same round shape with advanced instruments.

D. Getting energy from the Sun.

【題目】One day Kavya and I were playing tennis and the ball went into a man’s house. Then we went to his house and asked if he could give us our ball. He said, “No”. We felt helpless. But suddenly we came up with an idea. There was a water tank (水箱) behind the man’s house. I told Kavya, “We can climb onto the water tank and jump over the gate.” Kavya agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. We couldn’t climb in those. “We can get it back tomorrow,” said Kavya.

The next day we went there with Kavya’s brother Vijay. He said, “Shout loudly if you need me.” Kavya climbed onto the water tank first and then she climbed down into the man’s house. I followed her. We were looking under a bed for the ball when we heard a noise. It was Vijay. “Mother is calling you,” he said in a low voice.

We hurried out taking the lost ball with us. Along with the ball was a surprise! But we had to leave the house quickly. When we reached Kavya’s house, the TV was on. It was news time. I couldn’t believe my ears when it said that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars, which were exactly like the one we had seen in the man’s house.

We told the story to Kavya’s mother right away, and she called the police. Soon the police caught the man. They found all the gold bars in his house. A few days later a policeman came to us and said, “Thank you for helping us catch the guy. Here is a bag for all of you.” When we opened it, it was full of storybooks and lovely toys. Standing beside us, Kavya’s mother was all smiles.

1The children decided to climb over the water tank ________.

A. after they were refused by the man

B. because their ball fell onto the tank

C. to see who was brave enough to do that

D. because they wondered who the man was

2The surprise mentioned in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.

A. a tennis ball B. storybooks

C. a gold bar D. toys

3We can infer from the text that Kavya’s mother ________.

A. hated watching TV

B. enjoyed playing tennis

C. knew the man very well

D. was proud of her daughter

4What can we learn from the story?

A. Better late than never.

What does a beautiful person look like? Well, it depends on whom you ask and 1 they are from.

Much like the way people with straight hair want 2(curl) hair or those with pale skin lie in the sun trying to get a suntan (曬黑), people often find themselves more attractive when 3(visit) another country.

Recently a post went popular on the US question website Quora. It asked, “Have you ever been considered more attractive in a country 4 than your own?”

Many replies made 5 clear just how much more attractive they were considered in other country, and why.

Lolyta from Indonesia wrote, “In my home country, I am not considered beautiful, 6 when I went to Europe I got a lot of attention.” Pooja Gautam from Nepal shared a similar experience. Women with lighter skin always got more attention than she 7 in her country. But in Poland, she has gotten 8(usual) high levels of attention from locals. “Tanning salons (曬黑沙龍) are a big thing in Polish cities,” she wrote. “Some Polish people find it hard to believe 9 I tell them that many Nepalese people carry 10(umbrella) on hot, sunny days to stop their skin from turning darker.”

【題目】 A cell phone is one of the few things that we hold close to our faces all the time, and yet it could possibly explode – this is what made the recent Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smart phone accidents so shocking.

According to technology news website, The Verge, flawed (有瑕疵的) phone batteries might be to blame.

Even if you are not a science student, you probably know that it is common sense that the negative end and the positive end of the battery should never touch. If they do, the battery will short-circuit (短路), causing a powerful electrical reaction that can destroy the battery and cause a fire.

This is why all lithium-ion (鋰離子) batteries – the kind that can be found in many of our devices (電子設(shè)備) like tablets and cameras – have a separator layer inside to stop the two ends from touching one another.

But somehow, the separators in some of the Samsung phones broke, causing explosions.

Overcharging is another problem that can make batteries heat up quickly. Fortunately, most batteries are designed to be able to automatically stop charging once they are fully charged. But again, this somehow failed to happen in some of the Samsung phones.

According to Lynden Archer, a materials scientist at Cornell University, US, we have already achieved 90 percent of the battery life possible from a lithium-ion battery. Customers’ demands that their devices get thinner and their battery have a longer life have given producers little choice but to try to put more power into thinner batteries. However, the more energy you put into a box, the more dangerous it’s going to be.

1A separator layer is put in lithium-ion batteries in order to ______.

A.ensure a longer battery life

B.reduce a certain electrical reaction

C.connect the anode and the cathode

D.prevent a battery from short circuiting

2What are the possible reasons for the Samsung phone explosions?

A.Pushing the limits of batteries.

B.Short circuiting and overheating.

C.Overcharging and thinner batteries.

D.Automatic charging and broken separators.

3What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the article?

A.To describe problems facing cell phone producers.

B.To warn us about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries.

C.To teach us common sense when it comes to batteries.

D.To explain the reasons for the Samsung phone explosions.
