【題目】When I was 5, my father worked the night shift as a nurse in a hospital. He was always carrying his stethoscope (聽診器) so naturally, so I called him “Dr. Saldivar” while I pressed his stethoscope against his chest. But my father, as a humble man, was always correcting me: “I am not a doctor, son, but you can be one.” I grew up feeling like I had no limits because of moments like this, which has helped me take risks personally and professionally in spite of the hardships I had to endure.

Being born to Mexican immigrants meant that my parents had to work very hard to provide for my family and I had to learn to struggle through school paperwork on my own, because my parents’ English was limited and they couldn’t always be there motivating us through the process. If I wanted to succeed academically, my perseverance, and strength would be tested.

Perseverance, strength and good education are the gateway to success. And this is especially true when you look at the obstacles that Latinos have to overcome to succeed in public schools. For instance, while the national high school dropout (輟學(xué)) rate has decreased significantly, we still have the highest dropout rate in the country. We are more likely to live in poverty and attend racially separated schools. These issues create many other problems for Latinos.

To help relieve my family burden, I found my first job when I was 14 at a local hotel. Despite the long hours on my new job, I worked hard. Meanwhile, I continually stressed the importance of getting a respectable education and did everything possible to get one step closer to making my dream a reality.

Nearly a decade later, I became the first in my family to graduate from the University of Southern California. Knowing the social, economic, and political struggles that a community faces, I began to pursue journalism to give the disadvantaged minorities a voice.

【題目】閱讀理解
Italy is one country where beauty is prized more than any other virtue(美德). That is, except in the small town of Piobbico, the self-declared World Capital of Ugly People. The road sign at the edge of the town even warns visitors that they are entering the ugly zone. People who consider themselves ugly have been gathering in Piobbico since the 1960s. That's when Ugly Club president Telesforo Lacobelli established a dating agency for women who believed they were too ugly to attract husbands. Lacobelli believes that he is ugly himself because he has a short nose in a country where long or large noses have always been considered beautiful.
People from around the world travel to Piobbico to tell their sad stories of ugliness. During the annual Festival of the Ugly, which occurs on the first Sunday of every September, hundreds of people gather in Piobbico's town square to elect the president of the Ugly Club. Lacobelli wins the election every year. The Ugly Club has over 20, 000 members. They carry ID cards that grade their ugliness from bearable to extreme. A prize is awarded to Ugly Club members who qualify as extremely ugly.
The Ugly Club president insists that ugliness is a virtue. Since beautiful people get a lot of attention for their beauty alone, they have to work hard to prove their other virtues. Ugly people, on the other hand, are genuine and do not have to prove anything to anybody, according to Lacobelli.
Lacobelli is a spokesperson for ugly people everywhere. He believes that the uglier one is, the better life can be. Though the club enjoys making fun of beauty, especially beauty contests, Lacobelli has a serious side as well. 【題目】Life doesn’t always turn out the way we’d like. When situations take an unfavorable turn, we become upset, frustrated, or angry. When others don’t agree with us, or act in a manner we find disturbing, anger is a typical response. With the exception of a few extreme circumstances an angry reaction rarely improves the situation or helps us change our mind. Thoughtful consideration of what feelings and reaction are most helpful actually restores our real power, so consider the following alternatives to anger.

Compassion, consisting of both understanding and empathy, can be a perfect solution to anger. Each person has a right to live life according to their beliefs, dreams, needs, etc. If someone is acting improperly or not living up to our ideals, we need to remove the “shoulds” and remind ourselves that it is a necessary part of their life’s journey. Choosing this alternative response softens one’s heart and prevents anger from arising.

Humor is another powerful tool for lessening anger. We take life and personal offense far too seriously. After all, their behavior is a reflection of their internal environment and has nothing at all to do with us and it is in reality relatively unimportant. Humor puts any serious situation into its proper places. It acts as a protective barrier to emotional pain as we recognize that what is happening has nothing at all to do with us.

So when others behave badly, forgive them for their bad behaviors rather than judge them in your heart. When life hands us the exact opposite of what we requested, make light of it, After all, this life is only temporary so why get so bent out of shape when it isn’t in line with your ideals? Rain on your wedding day? Break oat the umbrellas and boots and dance in the puddles!

1What can we infer from the first paragraph?

A. Anger makes a person more powerful.

B. All the people get annoyed easily.

C. Anger often does no good to the situation.

D. Anger can do something good in most cases.

2How should we respond to others’ misbehavior according to the second paragraph?

A. Criticize it sharply. B. Complain about it.

C. Leave it as it is. D. Understand and accept it.

3What does the underlined phrase mean in the last paragraph?

A. Dull. B. Angry.

C. Delighted. D. Gifted.

4What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Alternative Responses to Anger.

B. The Bad Effects of Anger.

C. The Causes of Frequent Anger.

D. The Risk of Getting Angry.
