【題目】Australia’s koalas could die out within 30 years unless immediate action is taken to stop the losing in population, according to researchers. They say development, climate change and bushfires have all combined to reduce the number of wild koalas sharply.

The Australian Koala Foundation said a recent survey showed the population could have dropped by more than half in the past six years. The number of koalas was once estimated to be more than 100,000, but now is as few as 43,000.

The foundation collected field data from 1,800 sites and 80,000 trees to calculate the numbers. In one area in northern Queensland estimated to have 20,000 koalas a decade ago, a team of eight people could not find a single animal in four days of searching.

The foundation said besides problems caused by cutting down forests, hotter and drier conditions because of global warming had reduced the nutritional value of their main food, eucalyptus (桉樹) leaves, leading to poor nutrition for them. Koalas, which live in the forests in Australia’s east and south, are very picky about what types of the leaves they eat.

Foundation chief Deborah Tabart said: “The koalas are missing everywhere we look. It’s really no tree, no me. If you keep cutting down trees you don’t have any koalas. She is hoping the new figures will persuade the government’s Threatened Species Steering Committee (TSSC) to list the koala as threatened. But committee chairman Bob Beeton said a decision was not likely recently and the koala’s status as one of the country’s favorite animals would not be a factor. “There’s a number of species which are attractive and people have special feelings towards them. We don’t consider that,” Mr Beeton said.

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

How to live life to the fullest

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.” But for those who take critical decisions, life can be different. How true that is! Stare life in the face as you experience it like a roller coaster ride. 1 Life is made up of choices and decision-making is critical as each choice has both consequences and benefits. Please weigh the latter and always choose life. Always ask what you can learn and how you can move forward, and stop yourself from blaming other people if things aren’t the way you would like them to be.

Seize the day. 2 Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift—that’s why it’s called the present. Life presents us with a lifetime of opportunities, but the opportunities of a lifetime are got when right choices are followed. Be present to enjoy the moment. Each day is a fresh start with choices just waiting to be explored, so what are you waiting for?

3This is a great way to live life. It means accepting your present the way it is, and offering no resistance to it. However, it does not mean not trying to change it. It means being truly yourself, accepting the present around you, then trying to change it. Often ask yourself: “Has my resistance helped me in any way?” Remember: “Life goes on.”

Accept yourself. Don’t judge yourself. This is the very first step you must take if you really want to live life to the fullest. Why? Because if you’re judging yourself or thinking part of you is wrong, you’ll limit yourself.4

5No matter what the situation you find yourself in, always be focused on what you can be learning from it, how you can be growing, and what you can be taking away from it, so that you can respond to similar situations more effectively in the future.

A. Always be learning.

B. Fully accept the present.

C. Go on enjoying your life.

D. Show a positive attitude.

E. Live each day as if it’s your last day.

F. And if you limit yourself, you can’t live life to the fullest.

G. The meaning of your life is something you create day after day with your own actions and thoughts.

【題目】You may have heard adults say they are uncomfortable in the morning without a cup of coffee. One reason they may feel that way is that coffee contains caffeine(咖啡因). Caffeine occurs naturally in coffee, tea, and cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate. But now food makers are adding it to many products, from potato chips to water.

The US government is especially worried about the problem. That’s why the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is studying the health effects of caffeine on young people. Studies show that too much caffeine can make people nervous and unable to sleep. What’s more, caffeine is habit-forming. Those who consume it regularly and stop suddenly may experience headaches and feel tired.

One of the biggest concerns is the large amount of caffeine added to so-called energy drinks, like Red Bull. A 12-ounce can of cola has about 35 milligrams of caffeine. A similar serving of Red Bull contains more than three times that amount.

The Institute of Medicine is also working on caffeine-safety measures. “Teenagers should not drink beverages that contain caffeine. They should be aware of caffeine’s effects on health and on how the brain works. Take, for example, teenagers who consume caffeine to stay awake and study for a test. They will remember less of what they just studied,” said Stallings, a member of the institute.

Companies that make products with added caffeine claim they do not advertise them to kids. However, there is no law to stop children from buying them. So the FDA needs to set limits on caffeine, especially in energy drinks. As for added caffeine in foods, the government should just say no. If not, the amount of caffeine should be printed on food labels to remind consumers. The government must do that.

Doctors say kids should avoid caffeine. If you need extra energy, try these natural boosters: eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.

【1What is the US government particularly concerned about?

A. The fact that coffee contains caffeine.

D. The practice of using caffeine to make chocolate.

D. people’s concern about teenagers’ health

A. the process of the government’s controlling the use of caffeine

B. the measures of protecting teenagers from caffeine’s effects

C. the government’s responsibility of taking care of teenagers

D. the risk of buying products containing caffeine nowadays

【4The author may agree that _______.

A. getting enough sleep can make people energetic

B. headaches and feeling tired are common in teenagers
