16.The guy who tried to edit English
The English vocabulary is not only huge,it's also full of words that mean practically tile same thing.Get,obtain,acquire.Shine,gleam,glow,sparkle.(36)A
That was the thinking of a British writer named C.K.Ogden,who in the 1930s proposed (提議) a new form of English with a vocabulary of just 850words.He called the project Basic English.(37)F
Ogden arrived at his 850-word list through experimentation,rephrasing texts over and over until he was satisfied.The words be finally included were not necessarily the shortest or most concrete.(38)D Because any verbal idea could be expressed with a small number of"operators"---words like come,go,get,take,have,make,be,and do---Ogden argued that most verbs were unnecessary.In Basic English,eat is"have a meal."Forget is"go from memory."
Winston Churchill was a fan of the concept as a way to get foreigners to speak English,and he encouraged the BBC to use it.(39)ERoosevelt,who expressed mild interest,joked that Churchill's famous speech about offering his"blood,toil,tears,and sweat"to his country wouldn't have been so exciting if he"had been able to offer the British people only blood,work,eye water,and face water,which I understand is the best that Basic English can do with five famous words."
(40)CChurchill didn't use it either.When seeking to express ourselves,we don't necessarily need fewer words; we need the right words.So it's to our benefit to have a large supply on hand.

A.Do we really need them all?
B.How many words are there in English?
C.Ogden himself didn't actually use Basic English.
D,Plenty of seemingly basic words did not make the list at all.
E.He also tried to persuade President Franklin Roosevelt to promote it.
F.He believed it would make the language more efficient and easier to learn.
G.Despite attention from world leaders,Basic English never got very far off the drawing board.

14.Could smells affect your lifespan?Female fruit flies(果蠅) without the ability to smell food live longer than other fruit flies.The sense of smell may be connected to the cellular ageing (細(xì)胞老化) process in many other living things-even people.Such connection has recently been found in both worms and flies.For example,scientists found that removing fruit flies'ability to smell made them live nearly 20percent longer than flies with a sense of smell.
They confirmed that food smells were the ones most likely to affect ageing,as nutrition and lifespan are known to be connected in many living things.To test the idea that food smells affect lifespan,they removed flies'ability to smell carbon dioxide,which is produced by some fly foods.They left the rest of the smelling system intact.
This action had no effect on male flies,but the females lived 30percent longer than normal.Removing the ability to smell CO2 may stop flies getting information about food availability.This could mean that food is not enough,causing processes that encourage flies to survive.Scientists found that the female flies stored extra fat and that both males and females immune(免疫) to CO2were stronger against the stress than normal flies.It is suggested that females may simply be easily influenced by the smells of CO2
Scientists point out that people don't know whether ageing and smell are connected in animals and humans.But they clearly experience physical changes after smelling food.

21.From the passage,we learn that what scientists found is toC
A.show there is the best way to make lifespan longer
B.tell us we should remove our smell ability to live long

B.the connections between nutrition and lifespan
C.the importance of food smells to our humans
D.the connections between food smells and lifespan
23.According to scientists'opinion,we can see thatB
A.male flies in general can live longer than female ones
B.flies without ability to smell is encouraged to store extra energy
C.both male and female flies can live longer without the ability to smell
D.flies without ability to smell can also get information about food availability
24.Which of the following best describes the passage as a whole?B
A.CO2 has few effects on female flies.
B.The sense of smell might have an effect on living things.
C.The sense of smell is necessary to humans'health.
D.Female fruit flies can always live longer than male flies.

13.People born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.
Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning (斷奶) in either"summer"light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or"winter"cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark.A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day.
Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group.
After 28 days,it turns out the summerborn mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winterborn mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions in their biological clocks.
The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders including bipolar depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder.
"We know that the biological clock regulates mood in humans,"said study researcher McMahon."If the mechanism (機(jī)制) similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, the n it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality."
32.How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?
A
A.Seven.B.Six.C.Five.D.Four.
33.What's the main idea of the text?D
