9.In colleges around the country,most students are also workers.
The reality of college can be pretty different from the images presented in movies and television.Instead of the students who wake up late,party all the time,and study only before exams,many colleges are full of students with pressing schedules of not just classes and activities,but real jobs,too.
This isn't a temporary phenomenon.The share of working students has been on the rise since the 1970s,and one-fifth of students work yearround.About one-quarter of those who work while attending school have both a full-courseload and a full-time job.The arrangement can help pay for tuition (學(xué)費(fèi)) and living costs,obviously.And there's value in it beyond the direct cause:such jobs can also be critical for developing important professional and social skills that make it easier to land a job after graduation.With many employers looking for students with already-developed skill sets,on-the-job training while in college can be the best way to ensure a job later on.
But it's not all upside.Even full-time work may not completely cover the cost of tuition and living expenses.The study notes that if a student worked a full-time job at the federal minimum wage,they would earn just over 15,000each year,certainly not enough to pay for tuition,room,and board at many colleges without some serious financial aid.That means that though they're sacrificing time away from the classroom,many working students will still graduate with at least some debt.And working fulltime can reduce the chance that students will graduate at all,by cutting into the time available for studying and attending classes.
There is little reward for attending but not finishing college.Students who wind up leaving school because of difficulty in managing work and class are likely to find themselves stuck in some of the same jobs they might have gotten if they hadn't gone at all.The difficulty of working too much while in school can create a cycle that pushes students further into debt without receiving any of the financial or career benefits.
63.According to the passage,the reality of college students is thatD.
A.they throw parties a lot
B.they stay up late every night
C.they pay no attention to exams
D.they work besides attending classes
64.What is the indirect cause of an increasing number of working students?C
A.The need of developing social networks.
B.The lack of summer jobs for young adults.
C.The chance of finding a job after graduation.
D.The expenses of high tuition and living costs.
65.We can learn from the passage thatD.
A.working students are more likely to finish college
B.students can cover their college expenses through working
C.students receive a huge reward for managing work and class
D.dropping out of college may not help students get career benefits
66.What is the best title for the passage?B
A.The Difficulties of Landing a Job
B.The Struggle of Work-School Balance
C.The Reward of Working While Studying
D.The Images of Working College Students.

8.Dear Ms.Wang,
I am writing to inform you of some arrangements about my composition course and Latin course next year.
I've decided to re-establish the 5-paragraph essay as the goal for the composition course.I interviewed some of my former students and they all agreed that being able to write critically and continuously was important to them.
So next academic year,Term 1will be like always:sentences to paragraphing.And Term 2will work toward the 5-paragraph essay.The final 3weeks of Term 2will be reserved tointroduce writing for TOEFL and CEE.By that time,if the students have done their job correctly,then they should be able to write quite well.
As for the Latin course,I will post notices around campus next week so that the students will understand what's on offer before I actually introduce the course.A number of students already emailed me about the course.
I am sure you don't understand what a big deal our opening this program at our school is.People around the world are interested in what we plan to do.There are many rewards available to the students who succeed in the course.Please share what I have said with the administration.I want them to understand the importance of this course.The reason I have contacted these colleagues (actually Oxford contacted me) is that  I have confidence in our students and in myself.I know that when those professors meet our students and hear them speaking and reading Latin,they are going to be amazed.It will open all sorts of doors for students that they never even thought of knocking on.
Well,that's it for now.I'll see you soon.
Yours,
Edward Johnson

7.It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented.And at first sight,it looks like the easiest.Competitors have to do two things.The first is to stand still.The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car,and keep it there.
This is where things start getting difficult.Lots of people are doing the same thing.And the winner of the"handathon"contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time.That person gets to own the car.
It still seems to be an easy thing to do.At the beginning it is.Anyone can stand still.But when the contest has been going for four or five days,standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world.And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention.After a few days,the hand seems to belong to someone else-someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.
Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat,drink or do whatever else is necessary.No one is allowed to lean on the car for support.Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention.They also need to be able to develop special skills.
Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter.Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don't seem to do much preparation.Most say they will prepare by"getting lots of sleep".Others say they will"eat healthy food"or"pray for success".The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.
Handathons are competitions,but there is little rivalry(敵對(duì))between competitors.They help each other out and keep each other's spirits up.People who drop out early return with food,drink and encouragement.

25.The reason why the sport is called"handathon"is that competitorsD.
A.cover a long distance
B.keep one hand in place for long
C.wave hands as long as possible
D.do the same thing as in a marathon
26.What ability is likely to be needed most in a handathon?D
A.Standing without any support.
B.Not leaning on the car.
C.Eating and drinking in five minutes.
D.Having strong powers of attention.
27.Why is handathon popular?C
A.Someone can win with special training.
B.It doesn't need to make any preparation.
C.Anyone who is interested can join in it.
D.People get along well with each other in it.
28.Which of the following about handathon is NOT right?D
A.The person who takes part in it should stand still.
B.The person who takes part in it has to place his hands anywhere on the body of a car,and keep it there.
C.The person who takes part in it can have a break during the course of the competition.
D.Handathons are competitions,so competitors don't encourage each other.

5.A new graph has revealed exactly how long you'11 need to sweat it out in the gym to neutralize (抵消) swallowing a favorite fast food.
While eating fried chicken, pizza and burgers will all entail a gym session of over an hour doing cardio(有氧運(yùn)動(dòng))or lifting weights, women have it far harder than men and must work extra hard to banish calorie-packed meals.
After a classic McDonald's favorite, the Big Mac,men would need to do 42 minutes of cardio or 57 minutes of weightlifting.
As for women, fifty one minutes of cardio would help counter the 24 grams of fat in a Big Mac---over a quarter of the recommended daily allowance---or an hour and eight minutes of weightlifting.
However, the 450g Tesco chocolate cake was by far the worst offender.Clocking in at a whopping 1,710 calories and 90 grams of fat, only a hardcore gym session is going to shift the calories you've absorbed from this dessert. The average woman would have to lift weights for almost four hours to work off the calories in this cake.
Comparatively a chocolate bar seems healthy, with 237 calories which would take 25 minutes for the average woman to run off.Alternatively you could spend thirty three minutes doing weightlifting exercises.
Men will have to complete 40 minutes of cardio and 53 minutes of weightlifting while women will have to complete 48 minutes of cardio and 64 minutes of weightlifting against the calories in French fries.

It's extremely rare for a major U.S.city to close all its schools because of a threat and it reflected the unease hanging about in Southern California following the terrorist attack that killed 14people at a holiday lunch two weeks ago in San Bernardino.
In LA,the threat came in the form of an email to a school board member.Authorities in New York reported receiving the same type of email and decided there was no danger to schoolchildren.Mayor Bill de Blasio concluded the threat contained"nothing believable."It was so unconventional,"he said.

Officials in LA defended the move to shut schools, with that city's police chief dismissing the criticism as"irresponsible."
