I know what you’re thinking: pizza? For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers in the a.m. if you want to.
I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早飯), and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time, others think they’re “saying” calories ,still others just don’t like breakfast food .
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight . “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.D,who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers – it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow.” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it … you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.
1.The word “l(fā)eftovers” in paragraph I probably means ______.
A. food remaining after a meal B. things left undone
C. meals made of vegetables D. pizza topped with fruit
2.What can we infer from the text?
A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry.
B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast.
C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal.
D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.
3.According to the last paragraph, it is important to _______.
A. eat something for breakfast
B. be careful about what you eat
C. heat up food before eating it
D. eat calorie-controlled food
4.The text is written mainly for those _______.
A. who go to work early B. who want to lose weight
C. who stay up late D. who eat before sleep

MONTREAL (Reuters) – Crossing the US-Canada border(邊界)to go to church on a Sunday cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security(安全)rules.
The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church.
There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海關)station in this area is closed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法).
Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint.
Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said.
1.We learn from the text that Richard Albert is .
A.an American living in Township 15
B.a Canadian living in a Quebec village
C.a Canadian working in a customs station
D.an American working in a Canadian church
2.Albert was fined because he .
A.failed to obey traffic rules
B.broke the American security rules
C.worked in St. Pamphile without a pass
D.damaged the gate of the customs office
3.The underlined word “detour” in paragraph 5 means .
A.a drive through the town
B.a race across the fields
C.a roundabout way of travelling
D.a journey in the mountain area
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A.A Cross-country Trip
B.A Special Border Pass
C.An Unguarded Border
D.An Expensive Church Visit

Transportation and communication networks bring people together. Yet sometimes people themselves create barriers(障礙) to transportation and communication. In some countries, laws stop people from moving freely from place to place. Over the centuries, many groups of people have been denied the freedom to travel because of their race, religion, or nationality. In the Middle Ages, for example, Jews were often forbidden to move about freely within certain cities. South Africa's government used to require black Africans to carry passes when they travel within the country. Some governments require all citizens to carry identification papers and to report to government officials whenever they move.
Countries set up customs posts at their borders. Foreign travellers must go through a customs inspection before they are allowed to travel in the country. Usually travellers have to carry special papers such as passports and visas(簽證). Some countries even limit the number of visitors to their country each year. Others allow tourists to visit only certain areas of the country, or they may require that travellers be with an official guide at all times during their stay.
Many of those barriers to travel also act as barriers to communication.
When two governments disagree with each other on important matters, they usually do not want their citizens to exchange news or ideas freely. Countries often try to keep military or industrial information secret.
Today, people have the ability to travel, to communicate, and to transport goods more quickly and easily than ever before. Natural barriers that were difficult or dangerous to cross a hundred years ago can now be crossed easily. The barriers that people themselves make are not so easy to overcome. But in spite of all the different kinds of barriers, people continue to enjoy travel and the exchange of goods and ideas.
1.The examples in paragraph 1 are used to tell the readers that _______
A. people have been allowed to travel freely within the country
B. people have not been permitted to travel freely for various reasons
C. travellers have to carry special papers such as passports and visas
D. customs posts are necessary at the borders of the countries
2.Some governments limit the freedom of communication because___
A. they intend to keep their national secrets unknown to others
B. they think such freedom will lead to wars
C. they often disagree with each other on important matters
D. they want to show their authority over communication
3.We may learn from the passage that _______
A. people do not care about the removal of barriers between countries
B. people can not remove the obstacles made by themselves
C. man-made barriers are sometimes harder to overcome than natural ones
D. barriers should be taken for granted as they always exist
4.Which of the following can serve as the best title of the passage?
A. Barriers Made by People
B. Functions of Communication
C. Restrictions on Transportation
D. Progress of Human Society
