In a time when ivory poaching (偷獵) has gotten so bad that it threatens to wipe out several animal species, a young Dutch designer is creating “egalitarian (平等主義) jewelry^ made of our very own ivory—teeth.

Lucie Majerus got the idea for her “human ivory” collection after having her wisdom teeth removed. She kept them and soon realized they would make great material for a jewelry collection. “Why wouldn’t we value our own material instead of the precious material from other species? And what if we mine our own ivory and turn it into pearls?” she asks.

Her own teeth became a ring, but in order to create a whole collection, she needed more material, and since having more of her teeth removed wasn’t a very pleasant choice, she asked her dentist to save his patient’s unwanted teeth. Most people choose not to keep their pulled teeth, so they are usually donated to dentistry schools. Majerus also received the lost teeth of two of her teachers at Design Academy Eindhoven, so she had a nice supply of human ivory to experiment with.

To turn human teeth into attractive pieces of jewelry, Lucie Majerus first bleaches (漂白) them, and then uses a stone polishing machine to shape the teeth into various shapes.

Majerus displayed her human ivory jewelry collection at this year’s Dutch Design Week, and claims that people’s reaction was mostly positive. “Surprisingly, most people aren’t frightened at the sight of the jewelry, but really like the idea,” Majerus told Fast Co Design. “Some regret that they didn’t keep their tooth at the dentist and some, who will have teeth taken out soon, are now looking forward to it.”

Discovery’s astronauts arrived to an exciting celebration Wednesday as nearly 700 people crowded an airplane storage place, waving flags and holding signs that read: “Welcome Home, Astronauts!”

The seven-person team returned to Earth on Tuesday after being the first to take a space shuttle into orbit since the Columbia disaster(災(zāi)難)of 2003.

“In the last two and a half years, we have been through the very worst that manned space flight can bring us, and over the past two weeks we have seen the very best,” NASA Administrator Michael Griffin told the astronauts and their families and fans Wednesday.

The crowd waved American flags for the U.S. astronauts and Japanese flags for crew member Soichi Noguchi, one of the spacewalkers.

“As a rookie(新手)astronaut, I could not ask for more,” Noguchi said, “We had three spacewalks, two extra days in space and one great team.”

While the homecoming has been filled with excitement for what mission controllers declared a “truly spectacular test flight”, uncertainty remains for the future of the shuttle program.

Shortly after Discovery rose up into space July 26, a nearly 1-pound large piece of foam insulation(泡沫絕緣材料)fell from the fuel tank-the very thing that was supposed to have been fixed after Columbia exploded. The foam missed Discovery, but NASA grounded all shuttle flights until engineers fix the problem.

NASA ground crews examined Discovery after its return from orbit and found it in good condition, an official said Wednesday at NASA‟s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Technicians counted 101 dings and divots, including 20 that were larger than 1 inch. Schaaf Dean, landing support group chief, said the numbers were similar to the results of other shuttle, post-landing examinations.

A beginning examination of the shuttle’s thermal(熱的)blanket showed it remained undamaged during re-en-try into the Earth’s air.(Agencies)

You know the drill when it comes to losing weight: take in fewer calories and burn more calories.1.If you're trying to drop a few pounds fast, these interesting tips will make it easy for you to lose the weight quick.

Eat in front of mirrors and you'll lose weight

One study finds that eating in front of mirrors reduces the amount people eat by nearly one third. Having to look yourself in the eye reflects back some of your own inner standards and goals.2.

Sniff a banana or an apple when you feel hungry

I am one of the few man who work as a nursery school teacher in London. Most of my kids come from families on problems. It's surprised how very young children understand or are aware of things that go wrong in home. This, of course, affects them and sometimes make them very difficult to deal. At such times you have to be very patient with them.

I don't think that women are natural better with children than men are. Anybody who is preparing to understand and help children, and who has the right qualities can look after them and teach them. The qualities are there, in all men and women, but most men don't use them. I think my group of children rather like being with a man for the change, especially since they don't see their fathers very much. So I don't feel I'm doing a ‘woman's job’; in fact, as a man, I feel I can bring something extra to the job.
