The idea that animals can sense earthquakes is a popular one, and stories about animals 1 (behave) strangely before earthquakes 2 (tell) for centuries.

Researchers 3 believe that animals can sense earthquakes suggest that animals may be able to feel the Earth 4 (shake) before humans. It has been proved that animals are 5 (easy) to be influenced by small environmental changes than humans are. Other researchers have suggested animals may sense chemical or electrical changes in the field of the Earth which could be signs of 6 earthquake.

However, other scientists think the animals’ ability to sense earthquakes is very 7 (doubt), saying that animals react to various things, like being hungry, protecting their land, mating, enemies.... Animal behaviorists also point out that human psychology may have an effect on pet 8 (own), as they prefer to believe that their animals have the power of giving warnings before earthquakes.

故填have been told。

故填who/that。

故填an。

根據(jù)下文as they prefer to believe that their animals have the power of giving warnings before earthquakes中的they指的是動物的主人,根據(jù)語境用復(fù)數(shù),故填owners。

the answer to… 故填to

故填whether。

故填who/that

Dear cousin,

Long time no see! It has been almost a year ever since you move to London. I miss you a lot of. I’m writing the letter to ask you for help. As you know, I am eager to be photographer like you, so I asked my parents to buy me the camera last week. But he told me I wouldn’t concentrate in my schoolwork if I got it. Oh, my God! What can I make them trust me? I’m not a kid any longer, but I can control myself. What’s worse, I have promised that I will take photos for the school’s newspaper next month. When asking by my classmates, I will be absolutely embarrassed. Therefore, would you like to lend me some money? If you’d like, I will return it as soon as possibly.

Yours Sincerely,

Tom

Scientists have come up with a new way to measure ocean trash(垃圾) and the numbers are even worse than thought. In 2010, eight million tons of plastic trash ended up in the ocean from coastal countries far more than the trash floating on the surface of the ocean. That ' s bad news. The even worse news is that the tonnage may increase by as much as ten times in the next decade unless the world finds a better way to improve how trash is collected and managed.

The new study identifies the major sources of plastic trash and names the top 20 countries producing the greatest amount of ocean trash. The United States is 20th. The rest of the list includes l1 Asian countries, Turkey, five African countries, and Brazil.

The size of the difference is huge --- 20 to 2,000 times more than the amount of floating trash. To make the figure eight million tons understandable, Jenna Jambeck, who led the study, compares it to lining up five grocery bags of trash on every foot of coastline around the globe. "And by 2025, those five grocery bags of plastic are going to be ten bags," she says. That would be 155 million tons a year if present trash management practices remain the same."

Ocean plastic has turned up everywhere. It has been found in the deep sea and buried in Arctic ice with terrible consequences for some 700 species of wildlife in the ocean.

The study has also created a new mystery. Because what flows into the ocean is so large, scientists now have to figure out where else it collects and in what amounts. "But what we need to do now is close the gap." says Richard Thompson, a scientist from the U.K.

1What is the most serious problem concerning ocean trash?

A.There is no way to get rid of it,.

B.Eight million tons of trash goes into the ocean.

C.A lot more trash may be put into the ocean in the future.

D.The way to measure ocean trash hasn 't been found.

2Jenna Jambeck explains the seriousness of ocean trash mainly by ______.

A.showing the causesB.describing a process

C.making comparisonsD.making a classification

3The underlined part “the gap” in the last paragraph refers to the difference between ______.

A.what is harmless and what is dangerous

B.what is on the surface and what is in the deep sea

C.what is found and what can be recycled

D.what is from America and what is from other countries

4Which of the following can best describe the author 's tone in writing the text?

How to Survive Being Stuck in a Lift

Being stuck in a lift, also known as an elevator, can sometimes be scary, especially if you are a fan of those kinds of movies which have a lot of elevator tragedies. You may think being stuck in an elevator in real life is not like in the movies. 1

Remain calm and do not panic! You may have heard of this a lot of times and it is true that panicking will do you no good. 2

Press each of the floor buttons one by one. Then, try the “doors open” button. If none of the buttons works, the lift is broken, and you need to let someone know about it.

See if your phone has any reception or Internet. 3 If you have WiFi connection, contact a family member or friend. Don’t forget to tell them what the address is of the building and possibly which elevator you are stuck in. If your phone is not available, the following tips can help you.

Look through the gap between the doors of the lift. If you can see light between the doors, the lift has stopped near a floor, and you should be able to shout for help and be released. Do not try to force the doors open yourself. If you can’t see light between the doors, the lift has stopped between floors, and no one will be able to let you out if you scream for help. Look for an emergency telephone. If there is no telephone, press the alarm button repeatedly. 4

5 If you have waited for more than half an hour and nobody has come to get you out, shout and bang the inside walls of the lift. If no one is responding to you, then you’ll have to accept that you will be in the lift overnight. If this happens, make yourself as comfortable as possible to save your energy. By morning, the building should be full again. You can try to get some help then.

A. Check the time.

B. It will cause you not to be able to think clearly.

C. Eventually, someone should hear you and get help.

D. Here are some tips to help you survive.

E. However, it is still a vital thing to know how to survive if it ever happens to you.

F. If you do have reception, call emergency services.

G. Use your watch.

Nick Prosser, a 28-year-old New Zealander, has been stuttering (口吃) for as long as he can remember, but he recently discovered that speaking in an Irish accent makes his speech disorder disappear

The young New Zealander claims he discovered the simple cure to his stutter completely by accident, while trying different accents with a friend for fun. When he tried the Irish accent, both he and his friend were amazed that his stutter almost vanished. They were able to have a long conversation without him stuttering at all, which had never happened before. He just couldn’t believe that something so simple could be the cure to a problem that had seriously affected his self-confidence ever since he was a child

“I couldn’t believe it. I had been to so many speech therapists who never suggested this technique, Prosser said

Interestingly, Nick has never been to Ireland, but he believes that speaking in an Irish accent comes naturally for him because of his mother, who comes from an Irish family. He suggests that people suffering from similar speech disorders try looking at their genealogies (家譜) and attempt to speak in an accent associated to them. However, local speech specialist Annette Stock said she had never heard about this technique

“We know as speech language therapists that singing certainly helps with people that have stutters but you can’t just go around singing in your everyday life, Stock said.” I think that this is something that works for, him and that’s fine. But in six months’ time if it is still working I would be saying wow that’s amazing.

So why does the Irish accent make Prosser’s stutter disappear? No one knows for sure, but Ants Haines, who has been Nick’s barber for years, has an interesting theory: he claims that this way, the 28-year-old spends more time thinking how to pronounce the words, which somehow helps

1Which of the following can replace the underlined word “vanished” in paragraph 2?

A.Erupted.B.Worsened.

C.Disappeared.D.Functioned.

2What happened to Nick Prosser after he tried the Irish accent?

A.He turned to his friends for their help.B.He had more faith in himself.

C.He took pride in his language ability.D.He went to speech therapists for advice.

3How did Annette Stock react to Nick Prosser’s suggestion?

A.She doubted it.B.She tried to prove it.

C.She was confirmed of it.D.She was amazed by its effect.

4What does Ants Haines intend to tell us?

A.His relationship with Nick.B.His idea of the end of Nick’s stutter.

C.His convince in Nick’s learning ability.D.The influence of speaking different accents.
