【題目】 What we know of prebirth training makes all this attempt made by a mother to influence the character of her unborn child by studying poetry, art,or mathematics during pregnancy seem totally impossible. How could such extremely complex influences pass from the mother to the child? There is no connection between their nervous systems. Even the blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly. An emotional shock to the mother will affect her child, because it changes the activity of her glands(腺) and the chemistry of her blood. Any chemical change in the mother's blood will affect the child for better or worse. But we can not see how a looking for mathematics or poetic genius can be dissolved(溶解) in blood and produce a similar liking or genius in the child.
In our discussion of instincts(本能) we saw that there was reason to believe that whatever we inherit(繼承) must be of some very simple sort rather than any complicated or very definite kind of behavior. It is certain that no one inherits a knowledge of mathematics. It may be,however, that children inherit more or less of a rather general ability that we may call intelligence. If very intelligent children become deeply interested in mathematics, they will probably make a success of that study.
As for musical ability,it may be that what is inherited is an especially sensitive ear,a special structure of the hands or the vocal(發(fā)聲的) organs connections between nerves and muscles. If these factors are all organized around music, the child may become a musician. The same factors,in other circumstance, might be organized about some other center of interest.
The rich emotional equipment might find expression in poetry. The capable fingers might develop skill in surgery. It is not the knowledge of music that is inherited, then nor even the love of it,but a certain bodily structure that makes it comparatively easy to acquire musical knowledge and skill. Whether that ability shall be directed toward music or some other fields may be decided entirely by forces in the environment in which a child grows up.
【1】What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Mothers' prebirth training is totally unlikely to influence the character of unborn children.
B.A pregnant mother needn't have prebirth training because of no nervous connection with her child.
C.A mother can't help her child become a talented poet just by studying poems during pregnancy.
D.An emotional shock to the mother has little effect on her unborn child for their unconnected vessels.
【2】It can be concluded from the passage that a child may not inherit ________ from mother.
A.sensitive earsB.capable fingers
C.intelligenceD.a knowledge of maths
【3】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.Role of InheritanceB.Role of the Environment

【題目】 Nearly all of us have a bad habit, whether we know it or not. Some people say they want to get rid of(擺脫)it but don't know the proper ways. Here's some advice on how to get rid of bad habits.
Make a list. Write down why you want to stop a certain behaviour, how it's hurting you and how to get rid of it. This will help a lot. Look at that list regularly.
Join in other activities. It's wise of you to do something else when you want to stop your bad habits. If you get angry easily, for example, you can practise having a deep breath or going for a walk.
Give yourself a present. Before you take action against a bad habit, decide what you'll do to celebrate it if you reach your goal,
Keep off bad habits. If you are fat and want to lose weight, keep junk food out of your house. If you are a heavy smoker with coffee, turn to tea and keep away from friends who like smoking.
Be patient. Bad habits develop over years, so you probably won’t be able to get rid of them quickly. In fact, people often give up several times before being successful, so you should be patient.
Find support. Don't be afraid to ask for support from friends, family or other people who have the same bad habits as you. When you talk to others, they might be able to provide advice or encouragement that you usually wouldn't get from yourself.

【題目】 About 12 years ago, I began making a series of dolls called “Wee Forest Folk”. At first, I made them from cloth but then began using a kind of polymer clay (軟陶) called Cernit. The cloth dolls were beautiful, but it was impossible to get the level of details (細(xì)節(jié)) I can get with clay.
First, I use wire (金屬絲) to build the shape of the doll. Then I cover the head, hands, and feet around the wire by using the Cernit. Then I make the doll's clothes myself, using lots of different materials. The completed dolls are fixed onto hardwood bases made by my father, Jim Logan.
Generally, the dolls show older people taking part in traditional activities. I've always had a great respect for the older generation.
Inspiration for the dolls often comes from people I know. Once I was caught looking too closely at the wrinkles (皺紋) on the face of one of my mom's friends. But I explained that her laughter lines made her more attractive.
Now I work as a teacher's assistant, and while I was raising my two daughters, Keri and Sheryl, I could work on the dolls only late at night. The girls loved to come downstairs the next morning to see who'd arrived in the night.
It's the detail that I enjoy working on the most. I once made a fisherman doll for a lady to give her father, including a tiny creel — a basket used by fishermen for carrying fish. When the man got the doll, he immediately opened the creel to see what was inside. Luckily, I'd made a small fish out of Cernit and placed it in the basket.
Hopefully my story will inspire others to try their hand at doll making — I find it very relaxing and interesting.
【1】The dolls called “Wee Forest Folk” were________.
A.totally handmade
B.mainly made of cloth
C.usually for small kids
D.often designed by the author's father
【2】Why did the author look closely at her mother's friend's face?
A.To guess her age.
B.To get creative ideas.
C.To give her a surprise.
D.To find out why she was so attractive.
【3】The author tells the story of the fisherman doll to show that________.
A.it takes much effort to make a doll
B.it is difficult to satisfy everyone
C.the old also love her dolls
D.her dolls have fine details

【題目】If you thought pilots dimmed(調(diào)暗)the lights before takeoff to give you some shuteye, think again. Believe it or not, the dim lighting could actually help save your life in case of a plane emergency.
The dimmed lights before taking off the runway and landing are a flight precaution used to help passengers’ eyes adjust quicker during an emergency escape. “Going from a brightly lit environment to one that’s completely dark would require some time for our eyes to focus and see the escape slide,” Alice Theriault, service director for Air Canada wrote in a press statement. “Since we need to have all the seconds on our side in the event of an emergency, dimming the lights is one of many steps we take to ensure the safety of our customers.”
The phenomenon that your eyes see those strange speckles (小斑點(diǎn)) as your sight adjusts to a dark place after being in a light place is called dark adaptation. It normally takes our eyes about 20 to 30 seconds to see best in a dark room. The brighter the lights, the longer it takes for our eyes to adjust, which is why dimming the plane lights could shorten your “dark adaptation” time since you haven’t been sitting under fluorescent bulbs (熒光燈) all flight.
Not only does dimming lights add valuable time to the escape process, but it reduces the tension on your eyes if you need to look outside, or see the emergency lighting along the passage. “It helps keep you in the right direction.” Patrick Smith, an airline pilot and author of Cockpit Confidential told The Telegraph. “It also makes it easier for flight attendants to assess any outside risks, such as fire or debris, that might affect an escape.” So next time a pilot dims the lights, just know it’s for your safety, even though it creates a gentle atmosphere for your takeoff into the sky.
【1】The lights are turned down before takeoff to help passengers_______.
A. escape in time of emergency
B. take a short break
C. create a comfortable atmosphere
D. enjoy themselves
【2】Which of the following is True according to Paragragh 2 and 3?
A. Dimming lights is required when accidents happen.
B. Our eyes need some time to adapt to the change of light.
C. Speckles are caused by the use of dimmed lights.
D. It is required for pilots to turn off lights during the flight.
【3】What is the function of shortening “dark adaptation” time?
A. Slowing down the landing.
B. Adjusting the plane lights.
C. Keeping passengers calm.
D. Helping the crew judge outside risks.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A. A tip to make air travel safer.
B. An emergency event happening on a plane.
C. An explanation of an airline safety measure.
D. A warning message from the pilot.
