How to Make Small Talk

There’s nothing small about small talk. Many great friendships and relationships have started with small talk. Small talk helps you build a meaningful relationship with a person. 1If you want to know how to master small talk, just follow these steps.

2 If you want to make a person feel comfortable, the best thing to do is to have an "open attitude" and to direct your body toward that person without being too forceful. Just make eye contact, don’t cross your arms, and face your shoulders toward that person. This will make the person feel like you’re giving him all of your attention.

Put away your phone. There’s nothing more annoying than talking to a person who is constantly checking his cellphone.

Though you should look eager to talk to the person, don’t look too eager. Don’t lean(倚靠) so close that you scare him away. 3

Give a friendly greeting. If you’re seeing someone you already know, just say hello and greet her by her name, "Hi, Jen, it’s good to see you."4 If you don’t know the person, introduce yourself first so you feel more confident and in control of the conversation.

5 Just a simple "I love your shoes — where did you get them?" can get you into a fun conversation about shoe shopping. Even if the praise(稱贊) doesn’t lead anywhere, it will still make the person feel more appreciated before you start discussing other subjects.

A. Have friendly body language.

B. Start with a small compliment.

C. Focus your attention on their shoes.

D. Many people are turned off by a close-talker.

E. It also benefits you in the professional world.

F. You will feel uncomfortable when close to others.

G. This is simple and direct and lets the person know you’re excited to talk.

上文談到了閑聊可以“helps you build a meaningful relationship”,而E項“It also benefits you in the professional world.”

上文中的“Don’t lean(倚靠) so close that you scare him away.”

上文舉例說明,遇到認(rèn)識的人要主動向他人問候,G項中的This指代上文的例子,“lets the person know you’re excited to talk.”

本句是尾段的主題句,尾段舉的例子“I love your shoes—where did you get them?”

如表示轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系的but,though, however 等。 因果關(guān)系如so.because, therefore 等,如第5小題,使用了一個even if來作假設(shè)。

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.

“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density (密度)”,said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”

Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (MNEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.

“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”

His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半導(dǎo)體). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.

“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶體結(jié)構(gòu)) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”

Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery, In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.

A. He developed a chemical battery.

B. He teaches chemistry at MU.

C. He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.

D. He is working on a nuclear energy source.

2Liquid semiconductor is used to ________.

A. reduce the damage to lattice structure

B. test the power of nuclear batteries

C. decrease the size of nuclear batteries

D. get rid of the radioactive waste

3According to Jae Kwon, his nuclear battery ________.

A. uses a solid semiconductor

B. will soon replace the present ones

C. could be extremely thin

D. has passed the final test

4The text is most probably a ________.

A. book review

B. science news report

The seats are comfortable. The walls are padded(覆軟墊的) and white, and there are handles(把手) all over the place for the floating astronauts to hold.

But it’s the windows, the largest ever in space, that are the main advantage of the spaceship that Jeffrey Bezos showed off on Wednesday in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In a year or more—Bezos said the timing hasn’t yet been decided-his space company Blue Origin plans to begin flying tourists past the edge of space, 62 miles high, where they’ll experience the the excitement of weightlessness and view the beauty of Earth.

“Everybody says that when you go to space, it changes you, ” said Bezos, the founder of Amzon. com. “All the astronauts come back with stories like that. It’s very fantastic to see the thin layer of the atmosphere surrounding the blue planet.”

Blue Origin is one of the several companies that are seeking to lower the cost of access to space. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, for example, also plans to fly tourists to space.

Bezos said while his “only focus is people in space, ” the flight-testing program will require a great deal of effort.

“We are not racing, ” he said. “This vehicle is going to carry humans. We’re going to make it as safe as we can.”

The goal of Blue Origin, the space company Bezos founded in 2000, is to one day help millions of people enjoy their life outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Space tourism is the first step on that journey, Bezos said.

The tourist flights would require some training, he said, and be quick, just 10 or 11minutes. As many as six passengers would board the spacecraft about 30 minutes before liftoff. It would then be taken into space by a rocket, which, after they separated, would fly back and land on the ground. The capsule(太空艙) would continue climbing, allowing the passengers to get out of their seats and float without weight in the capsule for about four minutes before the return flight down.

1What impressed those astronauts according to Bezos’ words in Paragraph 4?

A. The Earth’s amazing beauty.

B. The damage to the atmosphere.

C. The excitement of taking a spacecraft.

D. The experience of feeling weightlessness.

2How does Bezos look at the development of the spacecraft?

A. It is not a hard task for Blue Origin.

B. It will be finished in one or two years.

C. It must be done in a careful, unhurried way.

D. It cannot be completed by just one company.

3Why did Bezos start the company Blue Origin?

A. To make visiting space possible for everyone.

B. To help people know about space tourism.

C. To provide money for research on space.

D. To protect the Earth’s atmosphere.

4How long will tourists experience weightlessness in space?

A. For about an hour.

B. For about ten minutes.

C. For about half an hour.

D. For about four minutes.
