Today, ultrasonic(超聲的) waves are being put to work in laboratories and factories. If an ultrasound generator is placed in a liquid, the waves move the liquid back and forth hundreds of thousands of times each second. This causes materials to mix quickly or to dissolve(使分解,使溶解) in liquids. Paint manufacturers(制造商) use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors. The companies that make film for your camera find that mixing chemicals by the use of sound waves will produce a more sensitive film.

The new lightweight(輕量的) type of washing machine uses ultrasonic waves to get clothes clean. Its special ultrasound generator is put into a pail of soapy water containing the soiled clothes. The sound waves drive the soapy water back and forth through the cloth so fast that everything is soon clean. There is also a new kind of dishwasher that works in much the same way.

Ultrasonic waves can shake a liquid so fast that tiny holes form all through it. The liquid is actually torn apart by this action. Almost as soon as these holes are made, they fall together again. The result is a powerful pounding action. In the dairy industry this is used for the double purpose of making homogenized(使均勻,使勻質(zhì)) milk and sterilizing(使無(wú)菌) it at the same time. If you look at some raw milk with a microscope, you find that it is made up of little drops of butter fat floating around in a watery liquid. In order to make milk easier to digest, these fat droplets(微粒) may be broken up by forcing the milk through very small openings. The result is called homogenized milk. When the ultrasonic method is used, the sound waves not only break up the droplets but also kill the germs in the milk by pounding them to pieces. (from www.nmet84.com)

8. Why does a paint manufacturer use ultrasound to do a better job of blending colors?

A. Because it is cheap to use ultrasound to blend colors.

B. Because the waves move the liquid so quickly that it can make materials mix quickly or dissolve in liquids.

C. Because they can mix chemicals by the use of sound waves.

D. Because the waves can clean the paint.

9. What properties does ultrasound wave have?

A. Homogenizes and sterilizes the milk.   B. Mix materials and break droplets.

C. Kill germs and sterilize milk.          D. Move liquids quickly.

10. What exists in the raw milk?

A. Little drops of butter fat.  B. Small holes.  C. Fat droplets and germs.   D. Chemicals.

11. Where is ultrasound wave not used?

A. In the paint manufacture.               B. In the shop mixing bread flour.

C. In the film-making company.   D. In the dairy industry.

解析:

8. 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)其上句 This causes materials to mix quickly or to dissolve(使分解,使溶解) in liquids 可知,答案選 B。

9. 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章最后一段的第 1 句 Ultrasonic waves can shake a liquid so fast that tiny holes form all through it可知,答案選 D。

10. 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章最后一段的內(nèi)容,特別是最后一句 When the ultrasonic method is used, the sound waves not only break up the droplets but also kill the germs in the milk by pounding them to pieces 可知,答案選 C(from www.nmet84.com)。

11. 推理判斷題。根據(jù)文章第 1 段最后提到的 Paint manufacturers(制造商)…以及The companies that make film… 兩句排除選項(xiàng) A、C,根據(jù)第 3 段第 1 句的 In the dairy industry this is used for… 排除選項(xiàng) D,從而得出答案是 B。

Northern Europeans spend a lot of time in their cold and cloudy winters planning their summer holidays. They are proud of their healthy color when they return home after the holiday. But they also know that a certain amount of sunshine is good for their bodies and general health.

In ancient Greece people knew about the healing(治療) powers of the sun, but this knowledge was lost. At the end of the nineteenth century a Danish doctor, Niels Finsen, began to study the effect of sunlight on certain diseases, especially diseases of the skin. He was interested not only in natural sunlight but also in artificially (人造地) produced rays. Sunlight began to play a more important part in curing sick people.

A Swiss doctor, Auguste Rollier, made full use of the sun in his hospital at Lysine. Lysine is a small village high up in the Alps. The position is important: the rays of the sun with the greatest healing power are the infra-red (紅外線的) and ultra-violet (紫外線的) rays; but ultra-violet rays are too easily lost in fog and the polluted air near industrial towns. Dr. Roller found that sunlight, fresh air and good food cure a great many diseases. He was particularly successful in curing certain forms of tuberculosis with his “sun-cure”.

There were a large number of children in Dr. Roller’s hospital. He decided to start a school where sick children could be cured and at the same time continue to learn. It was not long before his school was full.

In winter, wearing only shorts, socks and boots, the children put on their skis after breakfast and left the hospital. They carried small desks and chairs as well as their school books. Their teacher led them over the snow until they reached a slope which faced the sun and was free from cold winds. There they set out their desks and chairs, and school began.

Although they wore hardly any clothes, Roller’s pupils were very seldom cold. That was because their bodies were full of energy which they got from the sun. But the doctor knew that sunshine can also be dangerous. If, for example, tuberculosis is attacking the lungs, unwise sunbathing may do great harm.

Today there is not just one school in the sun. There are several in Switzerland, and since Switzerland is not the only country which has the right conditions, there are similar schools in other places.

1. According to the passage, when did sunlight begin to play a more important part in the treatment of disease?

A. From ancient times.        B. At the end of the nineteenth century.

C. Not until this century.              D. Only very recently.

2. Why are a Danish doctor and a Swiss doctor mentioned in the second and third paragraphs?

A. Because they both made use of sunlight to treat illness.

B. Because they were the first people who used sunlight for treatment.

C. Because they were both famous European doctors.

D. Because they used sunlight in very different ways.

3. Dr Roller set up a “sun-cure” school probably for the reason that _______.

A. most children could stay in his hospital

B. children could study while being treated

C. the school was expected to be full of pupils

D. the school was high up in the mountains

4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?

A. “Sun-cure” schools are becoming popular everywhere.

B. Switzerland is the only country where “sun-cure” schools are popular.

C. Proper conditions are necessary for the running of a “sun-cure” school.

D. “Sun-cure” schools are found in countries where there is a lot of sunshine.

I got tired of living the life that everybody told me I “should” be living , so one day I decided to start living life on my own terms. Frustrated(挫。﹚ith my job, I came home, put on my shoes, and just started running. It felt so good to be free. That first day I ended up running 30 miles without stopping. Yes, I had rediscovered my old passion ( 酷愛(ài)的事物) — and it felt so good I set a goal to support myself and my family from my running alone.
I trained hard every day. Since I wanted to be the best I could be, I knew I would have to set some clear goals for myself. A couple of my goals were: run a 135-mile ultra-marathon(超級(jí)馬拉松) across Death Valley, win the Badwater Ultra-Marathon, and run a marathon to the South Pole.
I had no idea how I was going to achieve these goals, but they certainly encouraged me to work hard. Today, I am really grateful to say that I have achieved all of them. Shortly after completing these goals, I set another goal: to run fifty marathons, in fifty states, in fifty days. Nobody had done anything like this before. To be honest, I was not quite sure if I could. But there was only one way to find out…so I just started training and preparing to give it my best try.
I completed that goal one year ago, and it felt great! But for me, life is not all about achieving goals. Sure, it feels good to succeed, but the greatest reward for me was learning more about myself and what I was able to do.
Only by stepping out into the unknown and stretching(使傾注全力) ourselves can we really discover what our true potential(潛能) is。
