I got tired of living the life that everybody told me I “should” be living , so one day I decided to start living life on my own terms. Frustrated(挫。﹚ith my job, I came home, put on my shoes, and just started running. It felt so good to be free. That first day I ended up running 30 miles without stopping. Yes, I had rediscovered my old passion ( 酷愛的事物) — and it felt so good I set a goal to support myself and my family from my running alone.
I trained hard every day. Since I wanted to be the best I could be, I knew I would have to set some clear goals for myself. A couple of my goals were: run a 135-mile ultra-marathon(超級馬拉松) across Death Valley, win the Badwater Ultra-Marathon, and run a marathon to the South Pole.
I had no idea how I was going to achieve these goals, but they certainly encouraged me to work hard. Today, I am really grateful to say that I have achieved all of them. Shortly after completing these goals, I set another goal: to run fifty marathons, in fifty states, in fifty days. Nobody had done anything like this before. To be honest, I was not quite sure if I could. But there was only one way to find out…so I just started training and preparing to give it my best try.
I completed that goal one year ago, and it felt great! But for me, life is not all about achieving goals. Sure, it feels good to succeed, but the greatest reward for me was learning more about myself and what I was able to do.
Only by stepping out into the unknown and stretching(使傾注全力) ourselves can we really discover what our true potential(潛能) is。

Today was the day I started my new summer holiday part-time job and I had a problem I woke up late because I had forgotten to set my alarm. Af-ter washing I got on my bike to ride the 8 km to the job only to see that the tire was flat. I scolded myself for not having checked it the night before. I should have done this as I hadn't used the bike for months. I hurried to get the pump but I found that it was broken. It was almost as if someone was try-ing to stop me from getting there.
Would I lose my job before I had even started? I tried to stay calm. I knew that worrying wouldn't help me find a solution. I needed to think clearly. I needed a plan. Then I remembered my neighbour Mike had a mo-torcycle. I ran to his front door and explained my problem. He happily agreed to take me there and I arrived on time!
When I got home I thought about what happened that morning. I realised that I was wrong to leave everything to the last minute and that the best solution to a problem is avoiding the problem in the first place.

We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck. At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. I enjoyed having it, but I said, "Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won't last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won't last." After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted, "Dad! Dad! Holly crashed your truck."
My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say, "Here is a chance to show Holly what you really love. She'll never forget it."
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van. In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal (油門). Holly was unhurt physically but when reached her, she was crying and saying, “Oh, Dad, I'm sorry. I know how much you love this truck." I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend dropped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened(潤濕) and she said, "That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad's car and ran into a log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home, my dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me."
Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her soul. I remember how sad Holly was on the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly thinks back on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of property. I repaired the van, but the dent (凹陷) in my truck is still there today. Every day it reminds me of what really matters in my life.

3.Which of the following descriptions is true according to the passage?

C. When the author saw the crash, he was sorry for the damage to his beloved car.
D. By comforting his daughter, the author showed how much more he loved her than his truck.
4.What does the underlined sentence imply?
