How to be a demanding reader
The rules for reading yourself to sleep are easier to follow than are the rules for staying awake while reading. Get into bed in a comfortable position, make sure the light is 【1】 enough to cause slight eyestrain, choose a book that is either terribly difficult or terribly boring-in any event, one that you do not really care whether you read or not-and you will be asleep in a few minutes. Those who are experts in relaxing with a book do not have to wait for 【2】. A comfortable chair in the library will do any time.
Unfortunately, the rules for keeping awake do not consist in doing just the 【3】. It is possible to keep awake while reading in a comfortable chair or even in bed, and people have been known to 【4】 their eyes by reading late in light too dim. What kept the famous 【5】readers awake? One thing certainly—it made a difference to them, a great difference, whether or not they read the book they had in hand.
Whether you manage to keep awake or not depends in large part on your goal in reading. If your aim in reading is to profit from it—to 【6】 somehow in mind or spirit—you have to keep awake. That means reading as actively as possible. It means making an effort—an effort for which you expect to be 【7】.
Good books, fiction or nonfiction, deserve such reading. To use a good book as a helper to fall asleep is pure waste. To fall asleep or, what is the same, to let your mind wander during the hours you planned to devote to reading for profit—that is, 【8】 for understanding—is clearly to defeat your own 【9】.
But the sad fact is that many people who can distinguish between profit and pleasure—between understanding, on the one hand, and entertainment or the mere satisfaction of curiosity, on the other hand—nevertheless 【10】 to carry out their reading plans. They can’t make it even if they know which books give which. The reason is that they do not know how to be demanding readers, how to keep their mind on what they are doing by making it do the work without which no profit can be earned.

【題目】Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
There is a difference between science and technology. Science is a method of answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving 【1】 problems. Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships 【2】 in the observable natural world and with building up theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and methods for carrying out the 【3】 of science.
Another difference between science and technology has to do with the 【4】 in each.
Progress in science does not consider the human factor. Scientists make a study of the universe, try to explain the rules of nature and strive to find out the truth. They can 【5】 pay attention to their own or other people’s likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things. What scientists discover may shock or anger people—as did Darwin’s theory of evolution. But even a(n) 【6】 truth is more than likely to be useful; besides, we have the choice of refusing to believe it! But hardly so with technology; we do not have the choice of refusing to hear the noises produced by an airplane flying overhead; we do not have the choice of refusing to breathe 【7】 air; and we do not have the choice of living in a non-atomic age. Unlike science, progress in technology must be 【8】 in terms of the human factor. Technology must be our slave and not the 【9】. The purpose of technology is to serve people in general, not merely some people; and future generation, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves. Technology must be 【10】 if it is to lead to a better world.

【題目】請閱讀下面文字及圖片,并按照要求用英語寫一篇150詞左右的文章。
Many students in China regard passing the college entrance examination as the ultimate (終極的) goal of academic life. Almost all students study hard up to senior high school to get higher grades in every subject, and be in a better position to excel in gaokao and get admitted to a “good” university, fewer challenges lie between them and a college diploma. Therefore, quite a few students, over-burdened with studies since their primary school days, lose interest in studies, let alone excelling in academics after entering a university.
However, getting a college degree now requires more effort than it did before. In September, the Ministry of Education released an announcement, requiring universities to increase the difficulty of undergraduate courses and work harder to end academic misconduct in bachelor’s theses (畢業(yè)論文). Universities will reasonably increase students’ academic burden to encourage them to work harder and improve their knowledge and skill levels.
However, while the Ministry of Education’s plans aim to increase university students’ academic burden, they’re not intended to put extra pressure on them. Instead, the new requirements are meant to fulfill the basic requirements of university education.
