The new science of spending comes to a surprising conclusion, How we use our money may        as much or more than how much we’ve got it.
Money spent on experiences, rather than material ,goods,        more happiness.
Imagine that you wake up tomorrow morning to    $1 million under your bed . What would you do     that cash?
The money will probably make you think about one thing     all else—yourself. A large amount of research reveals that money     our selfish sides. We will     much on what that money can do for us alone, Perhaps you are imagining buying a faster car, or even a new house,
But studies show that     goods often fail to deliver     happiness, Fortunately ,our ongoing research     many ways to get more happiness from every dollar you spend, Changing how you spend money can increase your happiness.
But making these     needs to challenge some of our ideas of spending It’s hard not to    buying a house as a wise investment(投資), But new research shows it brings very little happiness, A study in the United States found that homeowners, on average , were no happier than     .
So, working hard to save money for a house might not be such a good idea     it means spending less time with your families and friends.
And dozens of studies show that people get more happiness from buying     than material things, Experiential purchases --- such as trips, concerts and special meals--- are more     connected to our sense, of self.
And experiences come with one more     , They tend to bring us     to other people , but more often , material things are enjoyed   . So social contacts are important to     mental and physical health.

All Ric O Barry wants is to stop the dolphinkilling, so he is headed to this seaside Japanese town, Taiji. The American activist, who is the star of a new awardwinning documentary that portrays the dolphinkilling here, got an unwelcome reception when he showed up here this week for the start of the annual hunt.
His movie, The Cove(海豚灣), directed by National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos, was released in the United States a month ago but has not yet to come out in Japan.
Scenes in the film, some of which were shot secretly, show fishermen banging on metal poles stuck in the water to create a wall of sound that scares the dolphins— which have supersensitive sonar(聲納系統(tǒng))—and sends them fleeing into a cove.
There, the fishermen sometimes pick a few to be sold for aquarium shows, for as much as $150,000. They kill the others, spearing(刺) the animals repeatedly until the water turns red. The meat from one dolphin is worth about 50,000 yen, and is sold at supermarkets across Japan.
Greenpeace and other groups have tried to stop the hunt for years.Activists hope The Cove will bring the issue to more people internationally—and eventually in Japan.
Already, the Australian town of Broome dropped its 28year sistercity relationship with Taiji last month, partly because of the movie.
“Some regions have a tradition of eating dolphin meat,” said fisheries official Toshinori Uoya. “Dolphinkilling may be negative for our international image, but it is not something orders can stop.”
The town government in Taiji—which has made whales and dolphins its trademark—refused to comment about The Cove, or the growing international criticism against dolphinkilling.
Many in Taiji take the dolphin hunt for granted as part of everyday life. They are defensive about The Cove, seeing themselves as powerless victims of overseas pressure to end a simple and honest way of making a living.

Recently the busiest person on the Internet is absolutely Yuanfang, a fictional figure from the Chinese TV series “Detective Di Renjie”. In the TV series, Li was often asked by Di, “How do you see it, Yuanfang?” Then, the dialogues between them help advance the plot. Now, the casual pet phrase is used as many as 2.5 million times by netizens in a single day, according to statistics.
In fact, it is not the first popular sentence pattern on the Internet. Many other types of popular network words include those evolved from “the slogans of Vancl(凡客網(wǎng))” and actor’s lines of “The Legend of Concubine Zhen Huan”.
The explosive spread of the sentence “How do you see it, Yuanfang?” again proved the vast power of the network spread. The appearance of a buzzword(流行詞) on the Internet may be coincidental, but the spread of numerous buzzwords has started a social and cultural phenomenon. Therefore, any concrete contents can be added in these buzzwords, creating fantastic results.
Taking the “Yuanfang-style” as an example, its popularity displayed a social mentality of questioning. Although it seems a little funny to ask “Yuanfang”, a fictional character, and some people even find it boring. This way of asking a question reveals a valuable quality-listening. The world would be a better place if we all had children’s eyes. This is not because children’s eyes are too sharp to allow any blot(污點,瑕疵)to pass without being     , but because adults have too many conflicting concerns to keep their eyes open to all wrongdoing.
Not long before, an examination, intended to     some police officers to higher positions, was held in Gansu province. Someone     with a good idea that 18 primary pupils could be invited to act as invigilators (監(jiān)考人). At that age, students would do as they are told and act fearlessly.      , they caught 25 officers cheating on the spot, which has caused a stir (轟動,攪動) and      the question of whether adult invigilators would      their duties as well.
The implication of this event goes      its impact on the work style of local police officers and the examinations. Most people said what these children have done points to the sad fact of      being less trustworthy. If adults acted as invigilators, they would quite      turn a blind eye to cheating.
We Chinese have been holding the      that human nature was good at birth: as      of blot as a sheet of blank paper, which can be      with content (good or bad) in the process of growing up. Everything should be done on the basis of certain principles(原則).      , nowadays the repeated reports of cheating in examinations, selling ranks and      and embezzling (挪用) public funds paint a      picture of common social morals.    Adults have become too concerned with their own personal gains to      basic sense of principles. Besides, cheats are unfair to honest examinees, and when the success of cheats      more people to cheat, the consequences will be disastrous.
In a word, we adults need to have our eyes as      as children’s on matters of principle.

The traditional distinction between products that satisfy needs and those that satisfy wants is no longer adequate to describe classes of products. In today’s prosperous societies, the distinction has become unclear because so many wants have been turned into needs. A writer, for instance, can work with paper and pencils. These are legal needs for the task. But the work can be done more quickly and efficiently with a word processor. Thus a computer is soon viewed as a need rather than a want.
In the field of marketing, consumer goods are classed according to the way in which they are purchased. The two main classes are convenience goods and shopping goods. Two lesser types are specialty goods and unsought(主動提供的) goods. It must be emphasized that all of these types are based on the way shoppers think about products, not on the nature of the products themselves. What is regarded as a convenience item in France (wine, for example) should be a specialty goods in the United States.
People do not spend a great deal of time shopping for such convenience items as groceries, newspapers, toothpaste, aspirin, and candy. The buying of convenience goods may be done routinely, as some families buy groceries once a week. Such regularly purchased items are called staples. Sometimes convenience products are bought without enough thinking; someone has a sudden desire for an ice cream sundae(圣代) on a hot day. Or they may be purchased as emergency items.
Shopping goods are items for which customers search. They compare prices, quality, and styles, and may visit a number of stores before making a decision. Buying an automobile is often done this way.
Shopping goods fall into two classes; those that are recognized as basically the same and those that are regarded as different. Items that are looked upon as basically the same include such things as home appliances, television sets, and automobiles. Having decided on the model desired, the customer is primarily interested in getting the item at the most favorable price. Items regarded as essentially different include clothing, furniture, and dishes. Quality, style and fashion will either take precedence(優(yōu)先) over price, or they will not matter at all.
小題1:It can be learned from the first paragraph that ______.
A.a(chǎn) writer needs a word processor
B.needs and wants can’t be separated clearly
C.the way to distinguish the products is unimportant
D.a(chǎn) computer is a need rather than a want
小題2:The example of wine is used to illustrate that ______.
A.goods are classified differently in different countries
B.the types of the product lie on the people rather than its nature
C.Frenchmen often drink but Americans sometimes do
D.one product may belong to many types
小題3:Staples are items that ______.
A.a(chǎn)re convenient to purchase
B.a(chǎn)re purchased without enough thinking
C.people “want but don’t need”
D.people are in constant need of
小題4:Shopping goods that are considered as basically the same are those that ______.
A.consumers don’t care where to buy them
B.consumers spend much time searching for
C.satisfy similar needs of the consumer
D.can be found in nearly every shop

Long working hours, the fewest holidays and the high cost of living mean the big salaries on offer(可使用的)in the UK do not go as far as those earned in other countries, making Britain and Ireland the worst places to live in Europe.
France and Spain are the two countries topping the European Quality of Life Index(指數(shù))out today, according to the place comparison website Switch.com.
The French enjoy longer lives, better healthcare, more holidays and cheaper prices. In contrast Britons work three years longer and die two years younger after paying above the European average for fuel, food, alcohol and cigarettes. The amount we spend on healthcare and education is below the European average.
Only Ireland and Poland spend less, but Ireland has more doctors and hospital beds and Poland has more beds than the UK.People in Germany,Spain,France,Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden all enjoy longer life expectancy than Britons. And while we may be giving up work earlier, the average age at which we retire is still the fourth highest in Europe——and the UK state retirement age is set to rise.
Ann Robinson,of Switch.com,said:“There’s more to good living than money and this report shows why so many Britons are giving up on (對……不再抱希望)the UK and heading to France and Spain. We earn substantially more than our European neighbors, but this level of income is needed just to keep a roof over our heads, food on the table and our homes warm” . “It’s giving us a decent standard of living, but it’s not helping us achieve the quality of life that people in other countries enjoy. For too long the focus in the UK had been on standard of living rather than quality of life.”

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the Website you’ve visited,Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.
In fact, it’s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girl friend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen --- the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.
Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it's important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.
The key question is: Does that matter?
For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”
When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”
But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收費站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acauisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (優(yōu)惠卷).
But privacy does matter - at least sometimes. It’s like health: When you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.
小題1:What does the author mean by saying “the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked” (Lines 3-4, Para. 2)?
A.People's personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge.
B.In the 21st century people try every means to look into others’ secrets.
C.People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.
D.Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

小題3:Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret” ( Line5,  para. 3)?
A.Modern society has finally evolved into an open society.
B.People leave traces around when using modern technology.
C.There are always people who are curious about others’ affairs.
D.Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.
小題4:What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?

Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict.” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes—khaki pants and a sports shirt—to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I am working harder than ever.” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code.” “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative(保守的)dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale(心境,士氣). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative influence on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

 Why Doesn’t Anybody Copy Apple?
Apple’s products are the envy of the world. They have been spectacularly successful and are widely imitated, if not copied. The minute Apple crystallizes a product, everyone knows how to compete. This idea that the basis of competition is set by Apple and then the race is on to climb the path of improvement is unquestionable. When Apple releases a product that defines a category or dramatically changes the structure of an industry, it becomes obvious what needs to be built. But what I wonder is why everyone wants to copy Apple’s products but nobody wants to copy being Apple?
I can think of two reasons. Firstly, Apple is not worth copying because it’s not successful; secondly, Apple’s success cannot be copied because it is a magical process.
There is a great deal of evidence for the first hypothesis. The idea of Apple being successful is not something reflected in its stock price. Being valued lower than the average company in the S&P(標準普爾)500 indicates that to whatever degree Apple was successful in the past, it’s not seen by the vast majority of observers as successful in the future. Why should one bother copying Apple if it results in being punished with a low valuation? If one works really hard at innovation and then that innovation becomes commoditized(商品化)very quickly, why should one bother?
When innovation practitioners are asked what makes Apple successful, the answers regarding the cause of this success border on the mythical. The climax of this hypothesis is the “chief-sorcerer”theory of success which places one magician, like Steve Jobs,in charge of casting all the right spells(符咒)
What about Apple’s own opinion of what makes it tick? Tim Cook refers to a great team and integration of hardware, software and services as unique Apple advantages. It’s a better explanation. Integration is something that can take a long time, but it is possible with great effort. A few companies are starting to make moves in that direction, but efforts are half-hearted. There is no “move the Earth” panic to become an integrated company from Samsung, Google or Microsoft.
My own suspicion is that Apple is more aware of what makes it special than it lets out. However, as Tim points out, it’s not a formula. It’s complex, it’s subtle, but it’s not magic. It’s a process that requires a degree of faith and courage.
