1.Most evenings,before watching late-night comedy or reading emails on his phone,Matt Nicoletti puts on a pair of orange-colored glasses that he bought for S8on the Internet.
"My girlfriend thinks I look ridiculous in them,"he said.But Mr.Nicoletti,a 30-year-old consultant in Denver,insists that the glasses,which can block certain wavelengths of light emitted by electronic screens,make it easier to sleep.
Studies have shown that such light,especially from the blue part of the spectrum (光譜),inhibits the body's production of melatonin(褪黑激素),which helps people fall asleep.Options arc growing for blocking blue light,though experts caution that few have been adequately tested for effectiveness and the best solution remains avoiding brightly lit electronics at night.
A Swiss study of 13teenage boys,published in August in The Journal of Adolescent Health.showed that when the boys wore orange-colored glasses,also known as'blue blockers'and shown to prevent melatonin,in the evening for a week,they felt"significantly more sleepy"than when they wore clear glasses.The boys looked at their screens,as teenagers tend to do,for at least a few hours on average before going to bed,and were monitored in the lab.
Older adults may be less affected by blue light,experts say,but blue light remains a problem for most people,and an earlier study of 20adults aged 18to 68found that those who wore orange-colored glasses for three hours before bed improved their sleep quality considerably relative to a control group that wore yellow-colored lenses,which blocked only ultraviolet(紫外線)light.
LEDs used in devices such as smart phones,tablets and televisions tend to emit more blue light than incandescent products(白熾產(chǎn)品).LEDs are also increasingly popular as room lights,but"warm white"bulbs,with less blue,tend to be a better choice than"cool white"for nighttime use.The lighting company Philips also makes a reduced-blue LED bulb,meant to be used妙fore bedtime."In theory,anything that will decrease that blue light exposure at night will be helpful."said Christopher Colwell,a scientist at the UCLA,"I know some gainers who swear by those orange-colored glasses."
But orange glasses are not a panacea(萬能藥).Dr.Skene said."It isn't just getting rid of the blue and everything's fine,"she said.The intensity of light,in addition to color,can affect sleep,she said,and not all brands of orange-colored glasses have undergone enough independent testing for their ability to aid sleep.
During the daytime,experts say,exposure to blue light is good.Best of all is sunlight,which contains many different wavelengths of light."That's what our brain knows,"said Kenneth P.Wright Jr.,director of the sleep and chronobiology(生物鐘學(xué))lab at the University of Colorado,Boulder.
A 2013study he led,published in the journal Current Biology,showed just how different things can be without nighttime lights.After participants had camped in the mountains for a week,their bodies began to prepare for sleep about two hours earlier than normal.
Short of cutting out all evening electronics, experts say,it's advisable to use a small screen rather than a large one; dim the screen and keep it as far away from the eyes as possible; and reduce the amount of time spent reading the device.
"If you can look at the iPhone for 10minutes rather than three hours,that makes a lot of difference,"Dr.Skene said.

I’m part of the Roots & Shoots program founded by Dr. Jane Goodall. The program is intended to make and promote positive changes in the world. As Dr. Goodall says, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

In Bulgaria, where I live, homeless dogs are everywhere. Many people here turn a blind eye to them. But I cannot ignore the life of a street dog whenever I see one wandering in the street, looking for something to eat. That’s why I’m no longer a food waster. When I see wasted food, I always think of a hungry dog climbing to garbage bins, searching for food that people have thrown there. When eating in a restaurant, I’m not afraid to take leftover food to feed stray cats or dogs.

A week ago, I saw a homeless dog around the garbage bins. Immediately I knelt down, spoke to her softly and ran my hands over her. I could see that she had had puppies. I couldn’t imagine how she could have been able to care for them. Hours earlier, I’d bagged up a plate of leftover fish. As I unwrapped it, she wagged her tail and sniffed at it. She ate all the fish in no time.

It’s sad, isn’t it? I can’t understand why many of us waste so much and think little of it. These homeless animals have taught me that food is precious. Even when I don’t have leftovers with me, I’ll take the time to get something from the grocery store to feed them.

I know my power is small, so I hope that next time you see wasted food, do turn it into worthy food. You have the power to save a life!

The 1950s had seen the widespread use of the electric typewriter,which typed faster but also meant more mistakes.Also,mistakes made by early electric typewriters were very hard to erase,which caused problems for Bette.
In order to make extra money she used her talent to paint holiday windows at the bank.Then one day,it suddenly occurred to her that she could create a paint to cover up type-

9.http://www.dogonews.com/2013/5/3/hate-doing-laundry-you-are-going-to-love-this-shirt
Though doing washing is relatively effortless, most people hate the work, which is probably why this new shirt produced by an American company, called Wool & Prince,is producing so much interest.
According to Mac Brown,the shirt's creator,the seemingly ordinary shirt can be worn for 100 straight days without washing!Of course,any shirt can be worn for that long,if smell is not a problem.However,the Wool & Prince shirt is different because it remains as fresh smelling as it was-the first day it was put on.And it never needs ironing,because it never wrinkles.
While that may sound magical and even impossible,it is true.The secret to their success lies in the raw material used to make the shirt-wool instead of cotton.
Not only are wool fibers about four times stronger than cotton,but thanks to the natural crimp(皺褶),they also do not wrinkle as easily.But most importantly,the fiber is better at allowing moisture to escape.Sweat in itself is not smelly.It just gets that way when in contact with the human skin.Therefore,the fact that the fabric allows it to go off gives the shirt the"super power"to stay fresh after so many wears.
You can get this magical shirt for $98,which is the current selling price on fund-raising site Kickstarter.The company hopes to use the funds collected to begin producing the shirts.If things go well,Wool & Prince is planning to introduce other clothing,including similar dresses for women.
Well,you've got your favorite pair of jeans already.You might as well add your new favorite shirts you'll never have to wash or hang up either.They are surely a perfect match!
33.What is the character of the special shirt made by Mac Brown?C
A.It can be worn for straight days without washing.
B.It has no smelly problems like other shirts.
C.It remains as fresh smell as the first day it's put on.
D.It doesn't need washing and never wrinkles.
34.The fourth paragraph mainly tells usA.
A.the advantages of the special shirt
B.the causes of keeping fresh
C.why the special shirt doesn't wrinkle easily
D.it is beneficial to human skin

In a sense,Xiangzi is not just a dog,but a social phenomenon-and,perhaps,a marker of how quickly the Chinese nation is booming through its transformation from poor farmer to first-world citizen.Twenty years ago, there were hardly any dogs in Beijing, but now there're 900,000 registered dogs with countless thousands of others unlicensed. How this came to be is,in some ways, the story of modern China as well.
"People used to be focused on improving their own lives, and they weren't really acquainted with raising dogs,"said Ms.Qiu."But with the improvement in the economy, people's outlooks (觀念) have changed."
Having a dog can be a way to relieve the stress in people's lives, but mostly Beijing dogs have,as in the West, become objects of affection-even devotion-by their owners. It's easy to find dog-treat stores, dog Web sites, dog social networks, dog swimming pools-even,for a time recently,a bring-your-dog cinema and a bring-your-dog bar on Beijing's downtown nightclub row.
The doglike devotion of pet owners here seems to have softened the city government heart. In 1994,Beijing officials relaxed their no-dog policy to"severely restrict"dogs. In 2003,it was changed again to allow anyone to own a dog,but to limit city dogs to no more than 35 centimeters  in height. And nowadays the restriction seems to be loosely carried out.
As for stir-fried Pekingese (京叭狗)-well,that dog, too, may have seen its day.A formal suggestion to ban the eating of dogs has been made by a law professor named Chang Jiwen, who considered himself"not so much a dog lover as a China lover"."With China developing so quickly, more people should know how to treat animals properly,"he said in a telephone interview.
