【題目】故事續(xù)寫。 Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"
"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.
"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (臨終醫(yī)院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long."
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (計(jì)價(jià)器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence according to the address she had given me.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked.
"Nothing." I said.
"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

Paragraph 1
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.
Paragraph 2
I was on my way to visit her.

【答案】Paragraph1

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Before the woman left, I said to her, "My mother treated everyone kindly, she is a great person, but she passed away years ago. you are like my mother," the woman said, "thank you. If you want to visit me, I'll tell you my story." Then the woman left. After a long pause, I drove the taxi to go home.

Paragraph 2

The next day, I was on my way to visit her. The old woman told me that she used to be a millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we saw last night. But she neglected her family. Her only son died one year ago because of cancer. She sold everything to save him, but failed. How sad! At last, the old woman said to me, "Life is short, but please be in no hurry. Though everyone has to earn money to make a living, always remember that family is the most important thing to you," I said nothing but nodded hard.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
Most damagingly, anger weakens a person's ability to think clearly and keep control over his behaviour. The angry person loses objectivity in evaluating the emotional significance of the person or situation that arouses his anger.
Not everyone experiences anger in the same way; what angers one person may amuse another. The specific expression of anger also differs from person to person based on biological and cultural forces. In contemporary culture, physical expressions of anger are generally considered too socially harmful to be tolerated. We no longer regard duels(決斗) as an appropriate expression of anger resulting from one person's awareness of insulting behaviour on the part of another.
Anger can be identified in the brain, where the electrical activity changes. Under most conditions EEG(腦電圖) measures of electrical activity show balanced activity between the right and left prefrontal(額葉前部) areas. Behaviourally this corresponds to the general evenhanded disposition(意向) that most of us possess most of the time. But when we are angry the EEG of the right and left prefrontal areas aren't balanced and, as a result of this, we're likely to react. And our behavioural response to anger is different from our response to other emotions, whether positive or negative.
Most positive emotions are associated with approach behaviour: we move closer to people we like. Most negative emotions, in contrast, are associated with avoidance behaviour: we move away from people and things that we dislike or that make us anxious. But anger is an exception to this pattern. The angrier we are, the more likely we are to move towards the object of our anger. This corresponds to what psychologists refer to as offensiveanger: the angry person moves closer in order to influence and control the person or situation causing his anger. This approachandconfront behaviour is accompanied by a leftward prefrontal asymmetry(不對(duì)稱) of EEG activity. Interestingly, this asymmetry lessens if the angry person can experience empathy(同感) towards the individual who is bringing forth the angry response. In defensiveanger, in contrast, the EEG asymmetry is directed to the right and the angry person feels helpless in the face of the angerinspiring situation.
(1)The“duels”example in Paragraph 2 proves that the expression of anger ________.
A.usually has a biological basis
B.varies among people
C.is socially and culturally shaped
D.influences one's thinking and evaluation
(2)What changes can be found in an angry brain?
A.Balanced electrical activity can be spotted.
B.Unbalanced patterns are found in prefrontal areas.
C.Electrical activity corresponds to one's behaviour.
D.Electrical activity agrees with one's disposition.
(3)Which of the following is typical of offensive anger?
A.Approaching the source of anger.
B.Trying to control what is disliked.
C.Moving away from what is disliked.
D.Feeling helpless in the face of anger.
(4)What is the key message of the last paragraph?
A.How anger differs from other emotions.
B.How anger relates to other emotions.
C.Behavioural responses to anger.
D.Behavioural patterns of anger.

【題目】Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.

In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all—whether rich or poor, clever or stupid—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees refuse to do what they think to be "low" work, and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor. We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one's work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

1According to the passage, the purpose of education is _____.

A. to build a perfect world

B. to choose a system of education

C. to let everyone receive education fit for him

D. to prepare children mainly for their future work

2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. It's hard for university graduates to find jobs.

B. No one would like to do work with hands.

C. Education is not enough to build a perfect nation.

D. University graduates are ashamed of their work.

3In the writer's opinion, _____.

A. all the social problems can't be solved by education

B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world

C. free education won't help to solve social problems

D. education can settle all of the world's problems

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容的理解,選擇正確的答案。 Outside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she really was a witch.
They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take a flight. Suddenly, the old lady's work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen—a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack.
The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof—the children were sure that only a witch could own a black cat with three legs.
There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell.
"We have to get and help her," whispered Amy.
"What if it is a trick?" replied Ben.
"Don't be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already," reasoned Meg. "Come on, Amy, let's go." The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.
Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady's face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. "Go and get Dad," Amy yelled to her brother. "Tell him about the accident."
The boys did not need another excuse to leave. They ran as fast as they could for help, hoping that Mrs. Tailor would not wake and turn the girls into frogs.
(1)Why were the children hiding in the tree?
A.They wanted to watch Mrs. Tailor do her housework closely.
B.They were playing a hide-and-seek game.
C.They wanted to find out if the rumors about Mrs. Tailor were true.
D.They were pretending to be spies.
(2)Mrs. Tailor stopped sweeping when ________.
A.her front steps were clean
B.she noticed the children in the tree
C.she was ready to take a flight
D.she heard the hen cackling
(3)Ben did not rush in help Mrs. Tailor because ________.
A.he thought that she could be tricking them
B.he knew that they could not have been in the tree
C.he did not see the old lady fall down
D.he was afraid of the three-legged cat
(4)Which of these old sayings best suits the story's lesson for us?
A.Make hay while the sun shines.
B.Never judge a book by its cover.
C.People in glasshouses should not throw stones.
D.A bird in the hands worth two in the bush.
