A [2015 . Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their cooperation and support, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".
Nitrogen(氣)and carbon are shared through miles of un?derground fungi (真菌)networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神經(jīng)元)in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.
Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and oldest trees on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down " mother trees" with no awareness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.
"We didn't take any notice of it. ,, Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dy?ing, but we never give them chance. ,, If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
1.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Old trees communicate like humans
B. Young trees are in need of protection
C. Trees contribute to our society
D. Trees are more complex than you think
2. In Simard's opinion, trees .
A. compete for survival
B. protect their own wealth
C. depend on each other
D. provide support for dying trees
3. We can learn from the passage that_____________ .
A. "mother trees" are usually of no use to other trees
B. Charles Darwin had the same thought as Simard
C. if "mother trees" are cut down, the survival for the entire forest will be affected
D. people know much about the complex " tree societies"
4. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to
A. how "tree societies" work
B. how trees grow old
C. how forestry industry develops
D. how young trees survive

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?" UBC Professor Si?mard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined."
根據(jù)文章第二段"…trees survive through their cooperation and support, passing around necessary nutrition 'de?pending on who needs it ,."
When humans cut down 'mother trees' with no awareness of these highly complex 'tree societies' or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest."
it出現(xiàn)在文章最后一段,實(shí)際上it指代的是第四段提到的內(nèi)容,人們砍倒mother trees時(shí)是不知道"樹(shù)的社會(huì)" 的依存關(guān)系的,由此可知it指的是"樹(shù)的社會(huì)"是怎么運(yùn)作的。故選A項(xiàng)。

Picking a university is a tense period of asking yourself which institution is the most relevant. That's why university rankings play such a vital role in students' searching for their next academic directions. Rankings are also an inescapable part of the reputation and brand image of universities. "No university website is complete without the claim that it is in the top 100 for something or other," reported the BBC. The reason is simple: rankings help them to attract students, staff and that research investment.
Currently there are numbers of university rankings, and each has its own list of criteria. But the main categories are the same: academic reputation, graduates' performance and faculty resources.
However, experts point out the ranking process isn't en?tirely reliable. Mark Kantrowitz, a US financial aid researc?her, said university rankings were mostly just for show. He wrote in The Ne-w York Times , "It may give your parents better bragging rights? but that's about it.,,
Moreover, it's not difficult to see the limitations of uni?versity rankings. Many rankings focus on the number of times that research work is cited(弓|用)by other researchers. It helps the UK and the US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favoured language of acade-mia, John O'Leary, a member of Quacquarelli Symonds, told The Guardian, Also, rankings such as QS World University Rankings mainly focus on the qualities of the university rather than its students. "Any university ranking is likely to help students make better decisions about where to study, but the need to balance them with other more human factors is also important," said Phil Moss, an education and admissions consultant. " Advice from graduates or current students can be valuable in providing a genuine insight into the experience or quality of a particular degree programme. It can also add an element that rankings can never convey—-the actual emo?tion of a university experience."
5.Why do universities consider rankings important?
A. Rankings make them more appealing.
B. Rankings are students' only reference.
C. Rankings can increase their academic levels.
D. Rankings help them complete their websites.
6.What does the underlined word " It ,, in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Academic research work.
B. The number of researches.
C. The way of ranking universities.
D. The limitation of university rankings.
7.According to John O'Leary, what helps the UK and the US universities rank well?
A. The wide use of English in academia.
B. Their outstanding qualities.
C. Their graduates' excellent performance.
D. The academia's favour to them.
8.Besides rankings, what does Phil Moss suggest you should refer to if you're picking a university?
A. Investment in education.
B. Guidance from professors.
C. Information on websites.
D. Suggestions from students.

When you put down your pens at the end of the College Entrance Examination, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It's time to enjoy yourselves !
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It's to mark the time when kids turn into young men and women. After the prom, teenagers either go to col?lege or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed in shiny or brightly coloured materials.
Common prom activities include dining* dancing, crown?ing a prom king and queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school.
High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat.
But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of efforts to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honours that the pair take very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.
Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the prom. But others like to go with friends, to whom they are soon going to be saying goodbye.
If you like the idea of a prom, why don't you and your classmates organize one for your graduation?
5.Which of the following indicates that a prom is very im?portant to students?

Few of us haven't read Cinderella , the story of a young woman living in poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it, but there is a
hidden Cin?derella in everyone's heart―we all wish we could achieve rec?ognition or success after a period of obscurity(默默無(wú)聞).
Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story , a film set in a US high school.
Mary is shy but loves to dance. Compared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes complete?ly when a famous teenager pop singer, Joey Parker, appears.
Joey has everything the rest of the boys in her class don't have―kind, handsome and desirable. Mary and Joey's paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary-after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn't get into the top dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that means embarrassing her.
The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern-day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refresh?ingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.
The movie takes the Cinderella fairy tale as its jump?ing-off point," writes movie critic Amber Wilkinson. "Yet the focus is firmly on following your dreams."
1. The first paragraph is mainly to .
A. inform us of the importance to marry a prince
B. remind us why Cinderella is popular all the years
C. build interest and lead us to Mary's secret dream
D. tell us how interesting the fairy tale Cinderella is
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Joey is just like other boys in Mary's class.
B. The MP3 player helps Joey in finding Mary.
C. Not many people have a dream to be realized.
D. Mary's mother influences her a lot in singing.
3. What does the movie critic Amber Wilkinson mean by his words about Another Cinderella Story ?
A. The movie is exactly another copy of the Cinderella fairy tale.
B. The movie is as good as the story Cinderella.
C. The movie and Cinderella both focus on following your dreams.
D. The movie is based on the story Cinderella while a lit?tle different from it.
4. The passage is mainly about .
A. an introduction to Mary Santiago
B. a review about a film
C. an essay about dreams
D. an advertisement of Cinderella

How to love your parents
Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents
is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created
you raised you,and are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love
your parents.
5 A gentle "good morning" and "I love you" will warm a coldest heart. Remember that
they brought you into this world.Without your parents, you might still wander at an
unknown corner in an unknown world.
Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn
from them, preparing yourself for when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry
but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your
feelings or talk to a friend. 6
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect
from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you
want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your
head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human
beings and make mistakes. 7 Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your
parents?
Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV,or go
somewhere with them. 8 Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find
they are your teachers in this way or another.
Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. 9 Seek help if you are
being abused in any way. Parents do not have the right to harm you.
A.There can be realistic reasons for this, family violence for example.
B.Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can.
C.Tell them you love them every morning.
D.Forgiveness is the key.
E.Parents will in turn express their love to you.
F.After this, share your feelings with your parents.
G.Please remember parents are as important as friends.
