Tourism wasn’t as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.
Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors interesting places. There’re new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.

In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh(法老) treated the message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace, if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.
Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.
Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of head cutting!
It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered(傳送). Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and winning professionals do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising a patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he didn’t get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toast beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveler or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces.
Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, that’s all right. I’ll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轟炸的)person is sure to have.

An extinct mountain goat that was once common in the Pyrenees became the first animal to be brought back from extinction. Researchers used frozen DNA to produce a clone, but the newborn kid died within minutes of birth due to breathing difficulties.
The Pyrenean ibex is a type of mountain goat, which is believed to have died out completely in 2000. Before the death of the last known individual(a13-year-old female known as Celia), biologists took cells from her skin and ears. An earlier cloning attempt to use the skin cells failed. But the latest attempt involved the creation of 439 cloned embryos. Of these cloned embryos, 57 were put into the female domestic goats, but only one goat gave birth and the newborn cloned kid died after seven minutes as a result of lung disease.
Researchers say that other cloned animals, including sheep, have been born with similar lung disease, but they say that overall the experiment was a major step forward in the effort to bring the ibex back to its mountain home. The leading researcher Jose Folch says, “the cloned kid was genetically like the ibex;in species such as the ibex, cloning is the only possibility to avoid its complete disappearance.”
The failure to produce a living clone from DNA that was frozen only a decade ago shows the difficulty researchers would face in trying to bring back species that have been extinct(滅絕的) for decades or centuries. Researchers have had the idea of bringing back the Tasmanian tiger, which went extinct in 1936. There are, however, other species that have been seriously suggested for cloning, such as the giant panda, the African bongo antelope, the Sumatran tiger and the pygmy hippo. Supporters believe cloning provides hope of keeping these endangered animals alive before they die out.
1.What do we know about the cloned ibex?
A. It died of lung disease.
B. It was the first cloned animal in the world.
C. It lived for thirteen years.
D. It was born in 2000.
2.Jose Foleh would agree that cloning .
A. is not suitable and should be banned.
B. requires immediate attention.
C. should be carried out cautiously.
D. may help prevent animal extinction.
3.We can conclude from the passage that .
A. cloning has developed quickly in developed countries.
B. no more animals will die out in the future.
C. cloning makes it possible to preserve endangered species.
D. cloning seldom results in physical problems for animals.
4.What’s the best title for this passage?
A、Great advancement in cloning goats.
B、Difficulties in saving extinct animals.
C、Public concerns about cloning.
D、Cloning brought back an extinct species for a while.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。
Once Dr.Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases with his students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34,who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope he would live.
Dr.Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and,in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat.The patient said that he had no desire to eat.
“Are you getting food you like?”
The patient said nothing.
“Do you get the kind of food you have at home?”
The answer was no.
The doctor put his hand on the man’s shoulder and his voice was very soft.
“If,you had food that you liked, would you eat it?”
“Yes,yes.” the patient said.
The change in the patient’s appearance couldn’t have been more obvious.Nothing was said, but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and had also been received.
Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn’t getting food he could eat.One of the students said,“We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals.”
“Suppose,” the doctor replied,“you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn’t carry it,would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request?”
“I would probably insist,” the student said.
“Very well,” the doctor said.“You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won’t be easy, but I can help you.Meanwhile, let’s get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it.Or he’ll be killed by hunger.By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress,we need to be able to talk with him.”
Three weeks later,Dr.Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.
1.The patient had no desire to eat because __________.
A. he was not hungry
B. he was seriously ill
C. he was given special meals
D. he was not satisfied with the food
2.According to the passage,we can conclude that __________.
A. the patient was from another country.
B. the patient’s illness was caused by hunger
C. Dr.Mellinkoff performed an operation on the patient
D. the hospital failed to provide the right medicine for the patient
3.Which of the following words can be used to describe Dr.Mellinkoff ?
A. Cold.
B. Considerate.
C. Curious.
D. Confident.
4.What do you think Dr.Mellinkoff wanted to tell his students in this case?
A. Doctors should know their patients’ real problems.
B. Doctors should be able to speak foreign languages.
C. Doctors should try to improve their medical skills.
D. Doctors should give more medicine to patients.
