In addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality — independent will — that really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.
The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(給人深刻印象的) evidence to the value, the power of the independent will.
But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it’s usually not the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps(自立自強(qiáng)的) effort that brings lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions we make every day.
The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It’s our ability to make and keep promises to ourselves, to “walk our talk.”
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what “first things” are, it is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training to be self-controlled), carrying it out.
Discipline obtains from belief—belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的) purpose, to a long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.
In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have your work half done.

Sadness is unpleasant, and in a society where personal happiness is prized above all else, there is little tolerance for falling in despair. Especially now we’ve got drugs for getting rid of sad feelings — whether it’s after losing a job, the break-up of a relationship or the death of a loved one. So it’s no surprise that more and more people are taking them.
But is this really such a good idea? A growing number of voices from the world of mental health research are saying it isn’t. They fear that the increasing tendency to treat normal sadness as a disease is playing fast and loose (行為輕率). Sadness, they argue, serves a useful purpose—and if we lose it, we lose out. Yet many psychiatrists (精神病醫(yī)生) insist not. Sadness has a nasty habit of turning into depression(抑郁), they warn. Even when people are sad for good reason, they should take drugs to make themselves feel better.
So who is right? Is sadness something we cannot live without or something horrible never to touch?
There are lots of ideas about why feeling sad should become part of human life. It may be a self-protection strategy, as other primates (靈長類) also show signs of sadness. A losing monkey that doesn’t show sadness after it loses a fight may be seen as continuing to challenge the winning monkey — and that could result in death.
In humans sadness has a further function: we may display sadness as a form of communication. By acting sad, we tell other community members that we need support.
Then there is the idea that creativity is connected to dark moods. There are plenty of great artists, writers and musicians who have suffered from depression or disorder. Scientists found that people with signs of depression performed better at a creative task, and negative moods make people think deeply over the unhappy experience, which allows creative processes to come to the front. There is also evidence that too much happiness can be bad for your career. A doctor found that people who scored 8 out of 10 on a happiness test were more successful in income and education than 9s or 10s. The happiest people lose their willingness to make changes to their lives that may benefit them.
53. The underlined word “this ” refers to ________.
A. taking medicine   B. falling in despair              C. losing a job              D. feeling sad
54. The author believes sadness is ________.
A. a good thing for people’s health            B. something horrible never to touch
C. a necessary function of humans’       D. always to be treated as depression
55. Some animals show their sadness in order to ________.
A. cheat their enemy                                B. protect themselves
C. comfort the loser                               D. challenge the winner
56. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.
A. people with great creativity tend to be happier
B. unhappy experiences contribute to a greater career
C. too much happiness can be bad for your career
D. the happiest people are the most successful ones

When I was a little girl, my mom would say, “Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others.”   71  Friends and mates allow us to enjoy our successes and our joys, comfort us in our hard moments, and provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves. I’ve always looked at friends as the family we choose. They enrich our lives. As Robert Louis Steven once said, “  72
To be a good friend or partner, it’s important to be a good listener. Hear what your friend or mate has to say first rather than jump to conclusions or get defensive.   73 When they hear their words repeated back to them, it can help them to realize what they said was not exactly what they meant to say.
74  You know the old golden rule, “Care for others the way you would like them to care for you.” The support of a friend during a tough time could make the difference between success and failure. Encouragement and confidence are the gifts that can help change a person’s life.
Take care, though, with whom you choose to have close relationship, for they can have a great effect on yourself – respect and life path. As someone once told me “  75 They will either take you up or down.”
A.I am afraid so.
B.It is quite true
C.Friendship is the most important factor.
D.Sometimes it is useful to be their mirror.
E.A friend is a present which you give yourself.
F.The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift.

71   Lots of people aren’t satisfied with their present weight, but most people aren’t sure how to change it. You may want to look like the models, actresses or actors in magazines or on TV, but those goals might not be healthy or realistic for you .    72
So what should you do about your weight control?
73    The best way to find out if you are at a healthy weight or if you need to lose or gain weight is to go to see a doctor or dietitian(營養(yǎng)學(xué)家) for advice. They will compare your weight with healthy standards and help you set goals. If it turns out that you can benefit from weight loss, then you can follow a few of the simple suggestions listed below to get started.
74    People who lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measures usually gain back all of the pounds they lost, because they haven’t completely changed their habits. Therefore, the best ways of weight management are those that you can keep for a lifetime.
Small changes are a lot easier to stick with than big ones. Try reducing the size of what you eat.    75    Once you have that down, start gradually introducing healthier foods and exercise into your life.
All in all, it’s a good idea to keep a healthy weight because it’s just that: healthy.
A.Try giving up regular soda for a week.
B.Try to mind what you eat and stop when you’re full.
C.Weight management is about long-term success.

E. Being healthy is really about being at a weight that is right for you.
F. Changing from whole to nonfat or low-fat milk is also a good idea.
G. Weight loss is a hard topic.

Some people can stay up all night and still get work done the next day. I’m not one of them. After a night without enough sleep, I feel sleepy. I have trouble remembering things. And all I want to do is to go back to bed and sleep.
How do you feel after you’ve stayed up late to finish schoolwork? Or the day after a slumber(睡眠) party? Scientists now say that your answers to these questions may depend on your genes, which tell our bodies and brains what to do. People have about 40,000 genes, and each gene can have different forms.
A new research suggests that a gene called period3 affects how well you function without sleep. The discovery adds to older evidence that period3 helps determine whether you like to stay up late or get up early.
The period3 gene comes in two forms: short and long. Everyone has two copies of the gene. So, you may have two longs, two shorts, or one of each. Your particular combination depends on what your parents passed on to you.
Scientists studied 24 people who had to stay awake for 40 hours straight. Then they took tests that measured how well they could remember lists of numbers.
Results showed that the people with the short form of period3 performed much better than those with the long form did. In both groups, people performed worst in the early morning. After the first round of experiments, participants were finally allowed to sleep. People in the group that performed well on the tests took about 18 minutes to nod off(瞌睡).
People with long period3 gene fell asleep in just 8 minutes. They also spent more time on deep sleep. That suggests that people with the long form of the gene need more and deeper sleep to keep their brains working in top form.
I think I must have the long form period3. What about you?

70. The aim of the research is to _______.
A. find a new gene called period3   B. find out how genes affect a person’s need for sleep

Opened  on  October, 27,  1907 and completed in 1908, Union Station (聯(lián)盟火車站) is considered to be one of the finest examples of the Beaux-Arts (古典裝飾的)  style of architecture.  Architect Daniel Buraham designed the building.
At the time it was built, Union Station covered more ground than any other buildings in the United States and was the largest train station in the world.  In many ways, Union Station was a city within a city. At various times it employed a staff of over 5,000 people and provided hotel, ice house, first-class restaurant and police station.
As train travel was the means of transportation for even US Presidents in the early 1900s, a Presidential Suite (總統(tǒng)套間)  was added to Union Station. In 1909, President Taft was the first President to use the room and over the years many famous people were officially welcomed there. The last President to use the Presidential Suite was President Eisenhower.
For half a century and through two world wars, Union Station served Washington and the US as a major center of transportation and the place for many historic events.  On April 14, 1945,  a train backed into Union Station carrying the casket (棺材) of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
However, the air travel led to a decline in railroad passengers, and Union Station began to fall into disuse. In 1968, the decision was made to change it into the "National Visitor Center". The project opened in July 4, 1976 but failed to draw enough crowds to sustain(="keep" up) its operation, and was closed in 1978.
While Congress debated the future of Union Station, rain damage caused parts of the roof to fall down. Following three years of repair at a cost of $160 million, Union Station reopened on September 29, 1988.
Today, Union Station continues to make history as the most visited place with over 29 million visitors a year. World-class exhibitions and international cultural events are hosted there for the public to enjoy. Private special events are celebrated in the grand halls. Even today, US Presidents still visit Union Station.

New economy online
People are talking about the “new economy”. It’s very different from the “old economy”.
In the old economy, people travel to walk. They buy things in stores. They use the post office, the fax and the telephone to send information. They see people face-to-face at their jobs or in stores. People get information from newspapers, radio, television, books and libraries.
In the new economy, people do business through the “net”, which is a connection of millions of computers everywhere in the world. In the new economy, workers often work at home. But the new economy is double-edge sword(雙刃劍).Its disadvantage is also obvious. For example, the Internet has led to a huge increase in credit care(信用卡)cheating. Some illegal websites offer some cheap or banned(禁止的) goods or services. Online shoppers who enter their credit card information may never receive the goods they want to buy and their card information could even be for sale in an illegal website. So people in the new economy should be smarter and knowledgeable.

B. communicating with friends by telephone
C. meeting people face to face
D. shopping online
70.“But the new economy is a double-edge sword.” in the last passage means______.
A. the new economy is as sharp as a sword
B. the new economy has advantages and disadvantages
C. the new economy is better than the old economy
D. both the new economy and the old economy have disadvantages
71.Which of the following is NOT true?
