14.Well,parents,surprise!Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to thumb rides, and not just to school. It's awkward to be refused when you call a friend and ask for a ride. But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way.
It may sound risky,so many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don't branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter just like me,but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern.
"I think the digital connection of young people is really key, because younger generations grew up sharing things on line, sharing files, photos, music, etc,so they've been very used to sharing,"said Juliet Schor,a sociology professor at Boston College.
The sharing economy got big during the recession (經(jīng)濟衰退),allowing people to access more goods, services using technology and even to share costs. And that technology, for me,is what the car was for my mom,a gateway to more freedom, like what my friend Earl says,"The symbol of freedom isn't the car any more because there's technology out there connecting you to a car."
According to the researchers at the University of Michigan,30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver's license compared to six in ten today. So it's not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn't rushing to get a license but an iPhone.
"Driving, for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that's a negative. So if they could sit in the passage side and still be connected, that's going to be a plus."Schor continued.
To me,another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money.I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter.

So if they could sit in the passage side and still be connected, that's going to be a plus."
To me,another plus is that ridesharing represents something, something much bigger than trying to save money.I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other." Driving,for young people, does mean they have to disconnect from their technology, and that's a negative." The symbol of freedom isn't the car any more…"
I think the digital connection of young people is really key…"
But with Twitter, you just look for other people heading the same way."

2.Global Positioning Systems(全球定位系統(tǒng)) are now a part of everyday driving in many countries.These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go.However,they can also cause a lot of problems,send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost.Many times,the driver is to blame.Sometimes a GPS error is responsible.Most often,says Barry Brown,it is a combination of the two.
Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm,Sweden.He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States.There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay.Mr.Brown says,"They just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination.And,then it wasn't until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived.They actually put their home address in.So again,the GPS is kind of'garbage in garbage out'."
Mr.Brown says this is a common human error,but what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings,or failures,of GPS equipment.He says,"One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn.Because they just give you the next turn,sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it's going to the wrong place."
Mr.Brown says,"One of the things that struck us,perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you're doing when you use a GPS.There are these new skills that people have developed.There are these new competencies(資格) that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong.This goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills."
Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.

41.According to Barry Brow,in most cases,C are blame for the problems.
A.human errors
B.GPS errors
C.errors caused by both drivers and GPS
D.errors caused by putting in a wrong address

A.GPS is nothing but garbage
B.GPS is still not accurate enough
C.it is difficult for drivers to use GPS equipment.
D.sometimes drivers are responsible for the problem
43.It can be inferred from the second paragraph thatC.
A.It's impossible to drive from the east to the west in the US.
B.Barry Brown's friend went to Stockholm,Sweden by plane.
C.Given wrong instructions,the GPS will produce wrong results.
D.GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills.
44.Which of the followings is one of the shortcomings of GPS equipment?A
A.It tells the driver to turn once at a time.
B.It gives the driver the overview.
C.Its screen is too small to be seen clearly.
D.It is only suitable for passive drivers.
45.What's the main idea of the text?B
A.GPS systems need to be improved.
B.Driving with GPS can be difficult to navigate.

A dog is known as man's best friend for good reason.Loyal and affectionate,a dog companion can enrich its owner's life in many ways,(71)E Many teenagers suffer from periods of low self-esteem (自尊)as they try to navigate the wavy waters of adolescence and deal with all of its associated highs and lows.
A teenager who lacks self-esteem may feel isolated from his peers and unable to tell his parents about personal issues.The company of a dog can be a huge comfort and ease feelings of loneliness and awkwardness.A dog offers genuine unconditional love.(72)B
All dogs need exercise,so taking his clog for a walk is the perfect opportunity for a teenager to get outdoors and benefit from fresh air and physical activity.Exercise allows people to take control of their bodies,which is often the first step toward regaining control of other aspects of their life,says mental health specialist Dr.Alan Cohen.(73)G Exercise releases chemicals called endorphins (內排肽)into the brain?which create positive responses in the body,including improved selfesteem.
Dogs can help teenagers be more sociable and make new friends,suggests HELPGUIDE.(74)F A dog is a great ice-breaker,avoiding awkward social situations and putting the teenager at ease with people he meets.The more confident the teen becomes when out and about with his clog,the more his self-esteem will improve.
(75)A If a teenager is suffering from depression or developing dangerous habits such as alcohol and drug abuse,more extreme action may be required.In these cases,professional help should be sought and all treatment plans considered.Parents who suspect that their teen's low selfesteem is a sign of a far more serious problem should ask a suitably qualified health professional for advice.

A.In some cases,having a dog will not help with a teenager's low self-esteem.
B.It simply accepts its owner for who he is and doesn't judge,question or criticize.
C.Pets offer an unconditional love that can be very helpful to people with depression.
D.You don't have to worry about hurting your pet's feelings or getting advice you don't want.
E.In particular,someone with low self-esteem may find a pet dog to be extremely beneficial.
F.A teen may meet his peers while walking his dog in the park or taking part in a dog training class.

4.Teenagers have fewer friends than 20years ago,research has shown---despite the increasing popularity of social media.
A study carried out by experts at The University of Queensland in Australia,found teens felt less lonely than two decades ago---but that they have poorer social networks.
A survey of more than 285,000US high school students carried out between 1991and 2012found young people had fewer friends with whom to interact,but less desire for more friends.
The Globe and Mail quotes the findings of the research, printed in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, which suggests economic changes may have helped increased individuality (個體意識) among young people.
The authors behind the study wrote,"Greater economic opportunities offer individuals more freedom to manage their own money, decide whom to date and decide whom to marry, reducing the influence of relatives and giving people more freedom, which may increase individualism."
"Economic changes lead to increased individuality,which could lead to decreasing interest in friends,increasing self-reliance,increasing self-esteem (自尊) and decreasing loneliness."
Lead researcher,Dr.David Clark said further research on cultures outside the US would help determine if modernization is the root cause of the observed results.
He said,"If other cultures show the same pattern of reduced loneliness in the face of poorer social networks, this would support the idea that modernization is responsible."
The findings have shown that the growing use of social networking sites has had a negative effect on the quality of people's friendships.
A study from 2006by sociologists at Duke University also showed that on average most adults only have two people they can talk to about the most important subjects in their lives while one quarter had no close friends at all.

9.Compared with 20years ago,what do we know about teenagers today?B
A.They feel more lonely.
B.They have fewer friends.
C.They have wider social networks.
D.They are more eager to make friends.
10.What may economic changes make teens do today?C
A.Desire more friends.
B.Feel more lonely.
C.Be more independent.
D.Make money more easily.
11.In Dr.David Clark's view,D.
A.some adults have no close friends at all
B.teens should get away from social networks
C.all cultures show teens today feel less lonely
D.modernization may cause teens'reduced loneliness.
