Cell phones: is there a cancer link?

Could your cell phone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and Wi-Fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.

Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia(白血病). Also there’s a greater than 90 percent chance that cell phones can cause brain tumors. “It’s apparent now that there’s a real risk, ” said Carpenter.

But others believe these concerns are unjustified. Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病學(xué)) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cell phones, ” said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger. ”

Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs(電磁場(chǎng)) and illness— so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cell phones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cell phone industry group. The final report should come out later this year, but data so far don’t suggest a strong link between cell phone use and cancer risk.

A. they have evidence that the use of cell phones can lead to cancer

2.By saying “I don’t support warning labels for cell phones, ” Dr Martha Linet has the idea that _______.

A. the worrying is unnecessary

B. cancer-warning labels should be on cell phones

C. there is a link between cell phones and cancer

D. cell phones have nothing to do with cancer

3.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate?

A. Optimistic. B. Objective.

C. Opposite. D. Casual. ]

The owner of an Alabama Chinese restaurant named “Good Friend” shot at a customer who complained about a fly in her eggroll Thursday night. The bullet narrowly missed 20-year-old Birmingham resident Jatari Walker who told the Daily News she is scarred by the entire experience.

“I can’t sleep,” she said Saturday afternoon. “And since it happened I’ve had no appetite.”

Walker ordered a combination platter(大淺盤)and eggroll from the Good Friend Chinese and Seafood Restaurant on Dennison Ave. Thursday evening. After paying her $7 bill she went back to her car and discovered a fly inside. “I thought I need to take this back,” she said.

The customer went back and asked for a repayment and said the owner Chun HinChing, 52, was unhappy with her because she announced her discovery in front of other customers. After an argument he repaid the money and Walker — who is now a former frequent customer of the business — turned and walked to the exit.

That’s when Ching drew a handgun and fired a single shot over her head.

“He just shot the gun at me and I ran,” she said, adding she could feel the bullet whiz past her head.

Birmingham Police Department spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards told the News the owner was charged with attempted murder and was transported to Jefferson County Jail on $100,000 bail(保釋金).

Police believe Ching intended to hit Walker with the bullet and missed, Edwards said. The bullet hit the top of the door frame of the take-out business.

Ching did not tell police why he fired at Walker, Edwards said.

Edwards said he did not recall any previous problems at the business. He said Ching did not say why he had a weapon but added it was not uncommon for stores in that neighborhood.

“No one was injured from the gunshot”, Edwards said.

Calls placed to the restaurant Saturday afternoon were not answered.

I bought a Paul Smith shirt three months ago. For those who don’t know, Paul Smith is an English designer brand.

His shirts cost about 1,000 yuan and upwards. I paid 50 yuan for my colorful shirt from a street vendor in Beijing.

Of course my shirt was a knockoff, a cheap copy of the brand. After a few washes, little balls formed on the surface of the thin material.

Do I care? Not at all. You get what you pay for.

I have to admit I hate shopping. I don’t care enough about spending money on clothes. I have other priorities.

In You Are What You Wear, US writer Jennifer Baumgartner says people’s clothes tell a story about their personality.

She writes: “The clothes you choose to wear provide important information about you as a person: your approximate education level, your income, social status and even your level of self-esteem (自信).” When I started work as an undercover crime reporter, I had to shop for jeans and a hoodie (連帽衫) in order to fit in with a rough and ready (世故的) social group.

I bought the hoodie in a charity shop. My daughters were shocked. They thought I looked bad, but I knew my disguise was perfect.

Elizabeth L. Cline thinks she knows best when it comes to cheap clothes in her book Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion. She expresses sadness that clothing has been turned into a good that is thrown away after being used once or twice.

She looks down her nose at cheap fashion and longs for the good old days when department stores sold quality clothes at high prices.

I don’t agree. At least people now can choose what to wear without breaking the bank.

1.The underlined sentence in the article meant that .

A. I don’t mind spending money on clothes

B. there’s not much point spending money on clothes

C. it is too much trouble to spend money on clothes

D. I never spend money on clothes

2.From the text we can infer that the author’s disguise .

A. immediately won the admiration of his daughters

B. turned out unsuited to his plan

C. proved that clothes can’t show a person’s true personality

D. had something to do with his income

3.The author mentions Elizabeth L. Cline’s book to .

A. express his anger at the poor quality of clothes

B. show his disagreement with her idea

C. show his dislike for how people treat their clothes

D. support her attitude toward spending money on clothes

4.Which of the following might be the best title for the story?

A. The variety of clothesB. You are what you wear

C. High cost of cheap fashionD. You get what you pay for

Most parents of kids under age 8 don't worry about how much time they spend watching TV or using other media, from computers to smart phones to tablets PCs, according to a new survey that found a child's use of media often reflects how much time parents spend in the similar way.

¨We generally found that media use is not a source of conflict in the home" for families with young children, Ellen Wartella, a researcher from Northwestem University, told USA Today. She led a survey of 2,326 parents who have children 8 and younger. It found that in 80 percent of families, children's media use was not a problem, with 55 percent “not too" or“ not at all" concerned about it. It also showed parents have more positive than negative feelings about how media consumption affects a child's learning and the development of creativity. The exception is video games, which are viewed more negatively than TV, computers or mobile devices.“Parents rated video games as more likely to have a negative effect on children's school performance, attention time, creativity, social skills, behavior and sleep than any other medium," the researchers said in a news conference about the survey.

¨The findings exposes a generational shift (轉(zhuǎn)移) in parental attitudes about technology's role in young children's lives," said Wartella.“Today's parents grew up with technology as a central pact of their lives, so they think about it differently than earlier generations of parents, instead of a battle with kids on one side and parents on the other, the use of media and technology has become a family affair. "

The researchers identified three media environments created by parents: media-centric (39 percent of families) , media-moderate (45%)and media-light (16%). Children in media-centric families spend at least three hours more each day watching TV or using computers, video games and tablet PCs don't make parenting easier. And 88 percent of parents say they are most likely to turn to toys or activities to keep their children occupied.Slightly fewer turn to books (79%) and TV(78%).

The survey didn't look at how media affects children. That's a topic that the American Academy of Pediatrics has handled a number of times. The AAP says studies have found too much media use can lead to attention- problems, school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders and being fat. In addition, the Internet and cell phones can provide platforms for illegal and risky behaviors.¨By limiting screen time and offering educational media and non-electronic formats (格式)such as books, newspapers and board games, and watching television with their children, parents can help guide their children's media experience. Putting questionable content into context and teaching kids a700ut advertising contributes to their media literacy (素養(yǎng)) ," it says.

The pediatricians' group says parents should have “screen-free zones" and TV should be turned off during dinner. At most, it recommends children and teens engage with entertainment media for no more than two hours a day and that should be high-quality content. It is important for kids to spend time on outdoor play, reading, hobbies and using their imaginations in free play.“ Kids under 2 should not use television and other entertainment media because their brains are developing quickly and they learn best from direct human interaction," the group says.

An article on screen time by t.he Mayo Clinic also notes problems linked t.o over screen time, including being fat, irregular sleep , behavioral problems , weak school performance , violence and less time for active and creative play.

1.Parents have more negative than positive feelings about media consumption like .

2.Most parents don't worry about kid's media use because .

A.they can limit the screen time

B.they want their children happy

C.they also grew up with technology

D.they can teach their children themselves

3.From the data of the survey, we learn .

A.children in media-centric families are smarter than others

B.children in media-light families spend one hour watching TV

C.more than half of the parents think children's media use was a problem

D.media-centric children spend more than three hours each day on media use

4.To make parenting easier, most parents probably .

A.try to persuade their children to read books

B.a(chǎn)sk their children questions while watching TV

C.a(chǎn)llow their children watching TV or using computers

D.turn to toys or activities to keep their children occupied

5.Which of the following is a suggestion by the researchers?

A.Media use time for babies under 2 should be limited.

B.Entertainment media use should be high-quality content.

C.Schools should provide more time for active and creative play.

D.Home media use should provide platforms for illegal and risky behaviors.
