China is the biggest market in the world, and many countries such as Germany, the USA, the UK and Russia do a lot of business in China. Let’s have a look at some important tips to help you be successful when dealing with these nationalities.

First, you must be punctual (準(zhǔn)時(shí)的) with Germans. Even 5 minutes late makes a bad impression. Being punctual is also very important in the USA. In the UK, it’s important to be punctual for business meetings, but nobody expects you to be on time for a social event. Half past seven really means a quarter to eight, or even eight o’clock! With Russians, you should always be on time, though it is not unusual for them to be one or even two hours late!

It is best to dress formally and wear dark colours when you meet people from all the four countries. In Russia, designer clothes are very common. Don’t be surprised if you go to an office in the UK on a Friday and find everyone wearing jeans. Many companies have “dress down Friday”, when people wear casual (隨便的) clothes.

In Germany, first names are only used by family members and close friends, so be prepared to use titles and last names. In the USA you will usually be invited to use first names almost immediately. The British are quite informal and using first names in business is more and more common, especially among younger people. In Russia, however, nobody uses first names, so use titles and last names.

In conversation, the British and the Americans value humour, and both like to talk about sport. The weather is also a good topic of conversation with the British and the Americans, but avoid talking about politics. In Russia, say positive things about their country, but avoid making complaints. The Germans, however, prefer to get straight down to business!

So, use these tips, and you will be on your way to a successful international business career!

1.Which color should you NOT wear when meeting a person from the USA?

      A. Dark blue. B. Gray. C. Black. D. White.

2.All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ______.

      A. you can say something funny when you talk to an American

      B. you can use his first name when you talk to an Englishman

      C. you must be on time when you meet people from each of the four countries

      D. people wear whatever they like on Friday in some companies in the UK

3.When you talk to a Russian, you can ______.

      A. complain about something

      B. say something negative about his country

      C. say something good about his country

      D. point out some disadvantages in politics

4.The tips in this passage are probably given to people from ______.

      A. China B. the USA C. Germany D. the UK

Ever walked to the shops only to find, once there, you’ve completely forgotten what you went for? Or struggled to remember the name of an old friend? For years we’ve accepted that a forgetful brain is as much a part of ageing as wrinkles and grey hair. But now a new book suggests that we’ve got it all wrong.

According to The Secret Life of the Grown-up Brain, by science writer Barbara Strauch, when it comes to the important things, our brains actually get better with age.In fact, she argues that some studies have found that our brain hits its peak between our 40s and 60s—much later than previously thought.

Furthermore, rather than losing many brain cells as we age, we retain them, and even produce new ones well into middle age.For years it’s been assumed that brain, much like the body, declines with age.But the longest, largest study into what happens to people as they age suggests otherwise.

This continuing research has followed 6,000 people since 1956, testing them every seven years. It has found that on average, participants performed better on cognitive(認(rèn)知的) tests in their 40s and 50s than they had done in their 20s.Specifically, older people did better on tests of vocabulary, verbal memory (how many words you can remember) and problem solving.

Where they performed less well was number ability and perceptual speed—how fast you can push a button when ordered. However, with more complex tasks such as problem-solving and language, we are at our best at middle age and beyond. In short, researchers are now coming up with scientific proof that we do get wiser with age.

Neuroscientists are also finding that we are happier with ageing.A recent US study found older people were much better at controlling and balancing their emotions. It is thought that when we’re younger we need to focus more on the negative aspects of life in order to learn about the possible dangers in the world, but as we get older we’ve learned our lessons and are sub-consciously aware that we have less time left in life: therefore, it becomes more important for us to be happy.

1.Barbara Strauch probably agrees that ______.

A.the young are better at handling important things

B.people’s brains work best between their 40s and 60s

C.a(chǎn)geing leads to the decline of the function of the brain

D.wrinkles and grey hair are the only symbols of ageing

2.The continuing research has found older people perform better on _____ .

      A.vocabulary tests

      B.number ability

      C.perceptual speed

      D.body balance

3.People are happier with age because ______.

A.they learn to value the time left

B.they know how to share feelings

C.they cannot focus on negative aspects

D.they do not realize the possible dangers

4.What is the main idea of the passage?

      A.People get wiser with age.

B.People get more forgetful with age.

      C.People get happier with age.

D.People get more self-aware with age.

Cleanliness is important to academic success at one Chinese university where compulsory labor is part of a program designed to award class credits while teaching students with proper moral values.

During winter, the sky is still dark at 6:30 a.m.when the first year students in Trade and Management College in Zhengzhou begin sweeping the 165 acre campus and it can take up to an hour.

Mr.Sun,the university official, said labor is good for building character and promotes “the spirit of hard work.” Some students also claim that they are always proud of the clean campus. They never litter because they’ve been through the labor and understand that they should respect the fruits of labor of others.

Some students, however, are against it because they feel the demands of the cleaning program are a distraction. Some often show up late and hungry to their morning classes after rushing to sweep the campus and clean their rooms.
