【題目】 I believe that my actions show my beliefs, not my words.

I wrote a letter to my kids a few years ago. It’s three pages long, and it sums up my life experience of four decades. By the time they reach adulthood, they will have heard most of their father’s advice in that letter: live in the moment, do not attach yourself to physical things, treat others the way you would like to be treated, etc. I sealed the letter in a white envelope, and wrote instructions that nobody should open it unless something horrible happened to me.

As a police officer, I have seen life disappear in an instant. I realize that could happen to me at any time. Yet knowing that letter is there in my locker makes me more comfortable with my own death.

Every day, when I open my locker, I see the letter. It makes me aware that I should be careful at work, and show my children and the people I have connection with that I try to practice everything I have written. If that day comes and my children finally read the letter, I hope that because of my actions, they will take my written beliefs to heart and improve upon my example.

But for me, it’s not enough to write down my beliefs. I try to be the best person I can be every day-even in very difficult circumstances. I am more successful some days than others, but sometimes I curse too much. Sometimes I am cynical, unwilling to believe that people have good and honest reasons for doing something. I also get stressed and upset, yelling at my kids sometimes, and sometimes I am not as loving or as sympathetic as I should be. In fact, I am far from perfect, but I hope my children will eventually realize that perfection is an illusion. What really matters is that, instead of just writing down our beliefs, we all take action to be the best humans we can be.

1Which of the following can best describe the author?

A.Humorous.B.Interesting.

C.Selfless.D.Considerate.

2Why did the author open the locker to see the letter every day?

A.He wanted to confirm his beliefs.B.The letter served as a reminder.

C.He kept adding something new to it.D.His kids asked him to check it.

3Which can replace the underlined word “cynical” in the last paragraph?

A.Doubtful about others’ motivations.B.Curious about everything around.

C.Worried about his future life.D.Unsatisfied about his profession.

4What is the author’s understanding of life?

A.Parents should care for children.B.To become a successful father.

C.To be better today than yesterday.D.Bad guys deserve to be punished.

【題目】 In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving. For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball(躲避球).1

A New Model

In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. 2They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.

“We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE, program for the Victor, New York, school district.

A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more funding(資金) to PE programs.

Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. 3Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.

Outside the Gym

Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock climbing. 4It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.”

Lifelong Skills

In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders learn parkour(跑酷). Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim. 5

Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy.

A.They are also cutting back on team sports.

B.It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.

C.Other schools are now following his program.

D.Instead there is a list of different fitness classes.

E.The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.

F.She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.

G.Kids who are not as athletic sometimes hate playing team sports.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構成一個完整的故事。

Three boys and three girls were going to the beach. When they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine, dreaming of golden beaches. Suddenly, they noticed Vingo. He sat in front of them, eyes fixed upon a photo, completely in silence.

Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, a service area, and everybody got off except Vingo. The young people began to wonder about him. When they came back, one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself. “Want some wine?” she said. He smiled and took a swig from the bottle. He thanked her and became silent again.

The next morning, they awoke outside another Howard Johnson’s, and this time Vingo went in. The girl insisted that he join them. He ordered black coffee and some cookies. When they returned, the girl sat with Vingo again. After a while, slowly and painfully, he began his story. He had been in prison for the past four years, and now he was going home.

“Are you married?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” she said.

“Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said, “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, and if it hurt her too much, she could just forget me. I’d understand. ‘Get a new guy.’ I said. She’s a wonderful woman. I told her she didn’t have to write me. And she didn’t. Not for three and a half years.”

“And you’re going home now, not knowing?”

“Yeah. Well, last week, when I was sure the parole (假釋) was coming through, I wrote her again. We used to live in Brunswick, and there’s a big oak (橡樹) tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she didn’t have a new man and if she’d take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I’d get off and come homeIf she didn’t want me, forget it — no handkerchief and I’d go on through.”

“Wow,” the girl exclaimed, “wow.”

She told the others, and soon all of them were in it.

【題目】 You can take fish oil. You can invest in a language class. or some hours of exercise every week. There are countless ways to improve your memory and cognitive functioning(認知功能). You know, the brain-training industry is expected to reach $ 8 billion by 2022. But the cheapest, easiest and most time-tested way to sharpen your brain is right in front of your face. The most basic effect occurs in the area associated with language reception. We call that a shadow activity, almost like a muscle memory - that means, even if you are a retired sportsman now, some skills can still be stored in your memory. That means the language part of the brain would get a workout from reading.

What if you are a poor, or even a dyslexic, reader who feels as if you’ll never be able to read enough to get these benefits? A book can fix that problem too! According to a study, one hundred hours of remedial(補救的) reading classes significantly improved the quality of the brains' white matter. where information is processed. So turn off your phone and your computer, set aside a good hour or two - and just read on a regular basis.
