Dear Arthur,

In your last letter, you told me something about your sister’s surfing on the Internet. I’m familiar to your situation. As computers become more and more popular, some students cannot help play online games and chatting. It is not only a problem of wasting time, and a serious problem for their future! What you should do at first is to find out what make her addicted to computer games. Lack of love from parent? Poor scores? Then having a heart-to-heart talk with her. Secondly, you should help herself with her study to build up her confidence and make her interesting in it. Thirdly, find something else for her to do instead computer games. Your efforts will surely help change her life.

Yours,

After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day.

There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.

Although your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when you are dreaming, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.

If you have trouble falling asleep, some people suggest breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.

1.The text makes us know that not getting enough sleep might make you _________.

A. suffer form poor health B. enjoy more

C. dream more often D. breathe quickly

2. During REM, _______.

A. you move restlessly

B. you start dreaming

C. your mind stops working

D. your eyeballs move quickly

3.The underlined word “drowsy” in the last paragraph probably means______.

A. lazy B. sleepy C. relaxed D. pleased

A new word duang is taking the Internet by storm in China - but no one knows quite what it means. The character “duang” is so new that it does not even exist in the Chinese dictionary. But it has already spread like wildfire online in China, appearing more than 8 million times on China's micro-blogging site Weibo, where it drew 312,000 discussions among 15,000 users. On China's biggest online search engine Baidu, it has been looked up almost 600,000 times. It's been noticed in the West too, with Foreign Policy seeing it as a “break the Internet” viral meme - like a certain Kim Kardashian image, or a certain multicoloured dress.

But what does it mean? “Everyone's duang-ing and I still don't know what it means! Looks like it's back to school for me,” said Weibo user Weileiweito. Another user asked: “Have you duanged today? My mind is full of duang duang duang.” “To duang or not to duang, that is the question,” wrote user BaiKut automan.

“Duang” seems to be an example of onomatopoeia, a word that phonetically imitates a sound. It all seems to have started with Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, who in 2004 was featured in a shampoo advertisement where he said famously defended his smooth, black hair using the rhythmical-sounding “duang”. The word resurfaced again recently after Chan posted it on his Weibo page. Thousands of users then began to flood Chan's Weibo page with comments, making the word in reference to his infamous shampoo appearance.

The word appears to have many different meanings, and there's no perfect translation, but you could use it as an adjective to give emphasis to the word that follows it. A cat might be “duang cute”, for example. Or you might be “very duang confused” by this blog. For readers of Chinese characters, the Jackie Chan theme is also apparent from the strange way in which the word is written: a combination of Chan's names written in Chinese.

1.What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Millions share new Chinese character

B. There are many great storms in China

C. The Internet has made out new words

D. Many try to find ways to stop wildfire

2.What is discussed in the second paragraph?

A. The doubt of the word.

B. The structure of the word

C. The meaning of the word

D. The root of the word

3.When Jackie Chan first said duang, he really wanted to _____.

A. create an important word

B. see his Weibo Page flooded

C. praise a kind of shampoo

D. play a Hong Kong action film

4.When duang is used as an adjective, it can be used to _____.

A. emphasize the word after it

B. make other people confused

C. combine the users’ names

D. open China’s micro-blogging

In a world today of immense technology, population growth and economic flourish, planning for future residential (適合居住的) and commercial developments needs careful analysis with well thought through assumptions about effects on the environment and the people of the community.

One example of a growing city is Wooster, Ohio, my place of residency, Wooster in the last five years has grown considerably in population, leading to a growth in commercial business. Surrounded by farmland, Wooster’s planning commission chose to extend the community into these farm areas in the form of residential and commercial areas.

Picture this—corn fields, old trees, clean air, country roads, and wildlife are all part of the area. Within four years, the people living on this farm step outside on their front porch to view an extensive shopping center containing Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, TCBY, and a Cinemark movie theatre. The once quiet road is now a city street with traffic lights, busy with automobiles day and night. The air smells of car exhaust and fast food.

Some destruction of farmland is unavoidable when a city expands. Instead of expanding outward, planning commissions should consider interior(內(nèi)部的) remodeling of a city. Tearing down unusable buildings could remodel many areas inside the city. In addition, commercialized buildings could extend upwards to avoid unnecessary use of land.

Environmentally, commercial expansion is harmful to the land. Besides forms of pollution, wildlife, including both plants and animals, is put at risk. A planning commission could have realized the benefits of environmental protection. Why not preserve the beauty and naturalness of the land while at the same time allowing for growth?

With a steady growth of population and the need for more homes and more workplaces, many problems arise when planning for the future. The hillsides, fields and animal habitats need to be preserved while expanding cities. In the future, a world covered with concrete and asphalt(瀝青)could become reality. Serious research and analysis are needed when planning for the future of our home communities and for the entire globe to avoid such a miserable result.

1.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A. it is unavoidable to destroy farmland when a city grows

B. Wooster used to be a quiet and peaceful city surrounded by farmland

C. with many nationwide shopping centers, Wooster lost its uniqueness

D. commercial expansion has done no harm to Wooster

2.It can be concluded from the passage that the author thinks Wooster’s planning commission ______.

A. has tried its best to protect the environment

B. preserves the hillsides and fields

C. should have avoided such a tragedy

D. is the cause of environmental pollution

3.Which of the following sentences best expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. Planning for future residential and commercial developments has bad effects on the environment and the living things.

B. With a safety growth of population, more homes and more workplaces are needed.

C. With immense technology, population growth and economic prosperity, we need to plan for the future.

D. When planning for future developments, effects on the environment should be taken into account.

4.What is the writer’s attitude towards the current planning of cities?

A. Critical(批評(píng)的). B. Favorable.

C. Objective(客觀的) D. Depressed.
