Lead poisoning (鉛中毒) occurs when lead is present in high levels in the blood of a person. It is one of the most common medical problems found in children. And it’s important to recognize the presence of lead in children’s bodies because lead is very harmful.

Children have the tendency to go around and put things in their mouths like paint peelings (油漆層剝皮). This is one of the main causes of lead poisoning. It has also been found that children born in poor families have higher chances of getting exposed to lead.

Some of the common symptoms of lead poisoning in children are headaches, stomach pains, hair loss, muscle weakness and weight loss, etc.

Lead poisoning can have severe effects and can lead to heart diseases, kidney diseases and neurological (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)的) problems. It can also cause mental dullness and a low IQ level. There have been cases where lead poisoning proved to be terminal for children.

It’s difficult to easily recognize whether a child is affected by lead poisoning, as the symptoms of this disease can occur due to some other medical problems. Therefore, children under the age of six should regularly be checked to know the level of lead in their blood through blood tests. It’s possible to completely cure a child with lead poisoning through treatment. Usually the oral medicine chelator (螯合劑) is given to the children. Sometimes, children are given an injection (注射) for reducing the lead level. Children who have very high level of lead in their blood would need treatment for a long period of time and would also be put on a special diet.

Parents have to take certain precautions to lower the chance of lead poisoning in children. Cleaning the house regularly and removing shoes at the door after coming in from outside will prevent the lead particles from entering the house. Children should be put on a healthy diet, containing high proportions (比例) of calcium and iron, such as eggs, milk, fruits, potatoes, etc, which helps to keep the lead levels in control in the children’s bodies.

In short, it’s a must to be cautious and careful and protect your children from the horrible consequences of lead poisoning.

A month after Hurricane Katrina, I returned home in New Orleans. There lay my house, reduced to waist-high rains, smelly and dirty.

Before the trip, I’d had my car fixed. When the office employee of the garage was writing up the bill, she noticed my Louisiana license plate. “You from New Orleans?” she asked. I said I was, “No charge.” She said, and firmly shook her head when I reached for my wallet. The next day I went for a haircut, and the same thing happened.

As my wife was studying in Florida, we decided to move there and tried to find a rental house that we could afford while also paying off a mortgage (抵押貸款) on our ruined house. We looked at many places, but none was satisfactory. We’d begun to accept that we’d have to live in extremely reduced circumstances for a while, when I got a very curious e-mail from a James Kennedy in California. He’d read some pieces I’d written about our sufferings for Slate, the online magazine and wanted to give us (“no conditions attached”) a new house across the lake from New Orleans.

It sounded too good to be true, but I replied, thanking him for his exceptional generosity, that we had no places to go back. Then a poet at the University of Florida offered to rent his house to me while he went to England on his one-year-paid leave. The rent was rather reasonable. I mentioned the poet’s offer to James Kennedy, and the next day he sent a check covering our entire rent for eight months.

Throughout this painful experience, the kindness of strangers has done much to bring back my faith in humanity. It’s almost worth losing your worldly possessions to be reminded that people are really nice when given half a chance.

1.The garage employee’s attitude toward the author was that of ________.

A. unconcern B. sympathy

C. doubt D. tolerance

2.What do we know about James Kennedy?

A. He was a writer of an online magazine.

B. He was a poet at the University of Florida.

C. He learned about the author’s sufferings via e-mail.

D. He offered the author a new house free of charge.

3.It can be inferred from the text that ________.

A. the author’s family was in financial difficulty

B. rents were comparatively reasonable despite the disaster

C. houses were difficult to find in the hurricane-stricken area

D. the mortgage on the ruined house was paid off by the bank

4.From Paragraph 4, we can know that the author’s new house ________.

A. was located in the University of Florida

B. was offered by a poet and the rent was expensive

C. was sponsored by James Kennedy with its 8-month rent

D. was well-equipped but the rent was low

5.The author learned from his experience that ________.

A. worldly possessions can be given up when necessary

B. generosity should be encouraged in some cases

C. people benefit from their sad stories

D. human beings are kind after all

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(獵食動(dòng)物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the "hurt" adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.

Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.

Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.

Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.

Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.

As is mentioned above, animals behave dishonestly for survival. Is it OK to lie for us human?

1.The writer uses the three questions at the beginning of the passage to _________.

A. ask the readers to answer the questions

B. draw the readers’ attention to the topic

C. seek answers to the questions

D. show he is at a loss about the question.

2.Which of the following is not an example of animal’s dishonest behaviors?

A. A plover pretended to have a broken wing to protect its baby birds.

B. A scrub jay dug out its buried food and reburied it somewhere else.

C. The adoptive parents feed their baby birds of cuckoos.

D. A losing chimp starts fighting again after taking the winner’s hand.

3.The underlined word “sneaky” in paragraph 5 most probably means______.

A. selfish B. friendly

C. entertaining D. dishonest

4.What is the common reaction of most chimps when they find their favorite food?

A. They let out a loud cry

B. They cry in a very low voice

C. They hide their food immediately

D. They share their food with other chimps.
