【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。
I was standing in the checkout line behind a woman who looked to be in her 60s. When it was her turn to pay, the cashier greeted her by name and asked her how she was doing.
The woman looked down, shook her head and said, “Not so good. My husband just lost his job and my son is up to his old tricks again. The truth is, l don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays.” Then she gave the cashier food stamps(食品券).
Neither did I know how I could get through the days a year ago during my fresh year in the company. I didn’t know the rules, I was not familiar with the work, and I couldn’t feel the value of myself. I was even wondering whether I could get along, as my father was gone, my mother had no work and my brother was only 7. That feeling was exactly what the woman had said. Fortunately, things had changed since I received my colleague’s card, from which I felt the encouragement, and sensed happiness falling upon me again.
So I really wanted to help but didn’t know how. Should I offer to pay for her groceries, or ask for her husband’s resume (簡(jiǎn)歷)? As I walked into the parking lot, I spotted the woman returning her shopping cart. Suddenly I remembered something in my purse that I thought could help her. It wasn’t a handful of cash or an offer of a job for her husband, but maybe it would make her life better.
Then I approached the woman. My heart pounded as this was the first time that I had come with the idea to help a stranger.
“Excuse me,” I said, my voice trembling a bit. “I couldn’t help accidentally hearing what you said to the cashier. It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time right now. I’m so sorry. I’d like to give you something.”
I handed her the small card from my purse.
續(xù)寫要求:
1. 所續(xù)寫短文的詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
2. 至少使用5個(gè)短文中標(biāo)有下劃線的關(guān)鍵詞語;
3. 續(xù)寫部分分為兩段,每段的開頭語已為你寫好;
4. 續(xù)寫完成后,請(qǐng)用下劃線標(biāo)出你所使用的關(guān)鍵詞語。
When the woman read the card, she began to cry.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
After we embraced, I walked back to my car and the words on the card crowded into my mind again.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
【答案】When the woman read the card, she began to cry. And through her tears, she said, “You really have no idea how much this means to me.” I was greatly surprised by her response. Not having done anything like this before, I didn’t know what kind of reaction I might receive from the strange woman. All I could think of to say was, “Oh my. Would itbe OK to give you a hug?”
After we embraced, I walked back to my car and the words on the card crowded into my mind again. “You Matter.” The only two words on the card reminded me of what happened a few weeks earlier, when a colleague gave me a similar card as encouragement for a project I was working on. When I read the card, I felt warmth and happiness welling up inside me. Deeply touched, I came home and ordered my own box of You Matter cards and started sharing them with people in need. As someone put it, kindness, no matter how small, could make a big difference.

【題目】 There is a huge need for shark fins (鰭) in Asian countries. As a result, many sharks are caught and killed. According to reports, sharks are being killed at an shocking rate (速度) of up to 273 million worldwide every year.
Some experts predict that if the killing continues at the current rate, many shark species will be lost forever. It can be very dangerous. Sharks are very important and they should be protected.
In a study of the east coast of the United States, 11 species of sharks were eliminated from their range. Of the 14 species of ocean life that those sharks used to eat, the populations of 12 exploded and caused great damage to the ecosystem. For example, the cownose ray (鰩) population was no longer kept under control by sharks and so grew out of control. As a result, the rays destroyed the population of bay scallops (扇貝), their favorite food. The scallop fishery, which had been in good condition for over 100 years, was destroyed completely. Also, the removal of the scallops most likely had an effect on water quality as they were no longer there to perform their function (功能) of cleaning the water.
Sharks tend to eat very efficiently (高效地), going after the old, sick, or slower fish in a population, keeping that population healthy. Sharks help keep many populations of ocean life to the right size so that those prey (獵物) species don’ t do harm to the ecosystem by becoming too populated. The ocean ecosystem is made up of very complex (復(fù)雜地) food webs. For the most part, sharks are at the top of these webs and are considered by scientists to be “keystone” species, meaning that removing them may cause the whole structure to fall apart. Therefore, we should protect sharks because doing so is to protect the whole ecosystem.

C.there are more food for sharkD.the local scallop fishery was harmed
【4】What can we know about sharks from Paragraph 4?
A.They can’t find enough food to feed on.
B.They never eat the old, sick or slower fish.
C.Their large populations can harm the ecosystem.

【題目】 An abandoned car in Chicago worth about $600 has been issued more than $100, 000 in parking tickets (罰單) over the past three years. Now Jennifer Fitzgerald, 31, is stuck with the bill but says the 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo actually belongs to an ex-boyfriend who registered (登記注冊(cè)) the car in her name without informing her.
The Expired Meter ( 停車計(jì)時(shí)器) reports that from May 23, 2009 to April 30, 2012, the Chicago Department of Finance (DOF) issued 678 tickets against the car, totaling $105, 761.80. It set a Chicago record both for the total number and amount of parking fines issued. In fact, it blew past the previous record holder, which was $65,000 from about 400 tickets.
But Fitzgerald says she doesn’t owe the city a dime (10 分硬幣) and has filed a lawsuit (訴訟 ) in Cook County Circuit Court against the city of Chicago, United Airlines and the ex-boyfriend. Fitzgerald has two main arguments in her case. First, she says her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Preveau, is the actual owner of the car, having bought it from her uncle for $600 in 2008. In fact, Brandon paid for the car’s title (所有權(quán)), registration and insurance, but it was registered in Fitzgerald’s name. “Brandon used his 2007 income tax refund ( 退 款 ) to pay Patrick $600 for the car,” reads Fitzgerald’s complaint. “For reasons not recalled by Patrick, however, Patrick signed the title to the car over to Fitzgerald.”
Second, Fitzgerald’s lawyer is arguing that the city should have simply towed (拖走) the car after 30 days from O’Hare Airport, where it was parked and where Brandon worked at the time. According to Fitzgerald’s complaint, on or before November 17, 2009, Brandon drove the car into the parking lot and never drove it out again. And as the Expired Meter reports, Chicago law does state exactly that an abandoned vehicle is to be towed 30 days after being illegally parked.
【1】After the Chicago Department of Finance noticed the car, it _______.
A.wanted to break a record
B.tried its best to find its owner
C.kept issuing tickets against the car
D.decided to play a joke on its owner
【2】From Paragraph 3, we know that Jennifer Fitzgerald _______.
A.sold the car to her ex-boyfriend long ago
B.received the car from her ex-boyfriend
C.didn’t know anything about the car
D.wasn’t the real owner of the car
【3】Jennifer Fitzgerald filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago because the city _______.
A.didn’t inform her as soon as it found the missing car
B.didn’t tow the vehicle after 30 days from O’Hare Airport
C.didn’t state exactly that an abandoned vehicle was to be towed
D.didn’t help her find the car when it was missing in the beginning
【4】After reading the passage we learn that Jennifer Fitzgerald _______.
A.doesn’t want to pay any money
B.thinks Patrick should pay the fines
C.isn’t trying to find her ex-boyfriend
D.has never been to O’Hare Airport

【題目】 Corn has been a significant part in American food since before European arrival. After the Civil War, grits (粗玉米粉), which is made out of corn, became a diet mainstay (支柱) because water-powered mills (磨坊) worked to grind dried corn. They were relatively inexpensive and could be eaten with almost anything, making it possible for everyone to enjoy.
Grits are usually cooked with water, cream and butter over the course of many hours. There can be varying types of grits from smooth to grainy. There are even instant grits for those without the hours to cook. Worth noting is that sugar is not typically added.
Grits can be served for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but they're commonly used as a base, usually topped with seafood and a delicious sauce. It's a dish eaten by everyone from sitting presidents to blue collar workers in a variety of ways, both in fine dining restaurants and oily spoons.
Shrimp and grits is the most well-known dish incorporating grits, especially in coastal areas like Charleston, South Carolina. It was originally a fisherman’s breakfast, a hearty meal before a long day of work, and today, it's found on menus throughout the nation.
Chefs have also become creative with the dish, adding modern elements to the traditional. Mashama Bailey has a foie gras (鵝肝醬) and grits dish at The Grey in Savannah, Georgia. Edward Lee has prepared it like the porridge his Korean parents cooked during his growing up, but uses Kentucky's Wiesenberger grits. Nathalie Dupree has made her career on the dish with her cookbook titled “Shrimp and Grits," while Virginia Willis has the appropriately titled “Grits”.
【1】Why did grits become main food?
A.Because corm played a key role.

【題目】 The promise of college in America is the promise of a clear path to the future, of a reward for all the sleep deprivation and soul-deadening competition of high school, and, most of all, of instant adulthood. As of April, 2020, however, none of that is happening due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus(新型冠狀病毒).
Saminah Haddad, a seventeen-year-old senior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, wasn’t expecting her college offers until later in the spring. This year, there will be no spring season, which for Haddad means no four-year college. She is considering Long Beach City College, which is free for state residents. She also lost her job at an amusement park. All of the senior-year milestones that Haddad had been looking forward to have been cancelled: prom, graduation, and an event called the “Pursuit of Excellence Awards,” where she would have been recognized for perfect attendance. She doesn’t yet know if she’ll still be working this summer for her father, who was about to open a juice bar in Brooklyn.
In the meantime, Haddad’s school is offering some online instruction, but in her case the course load has dropped to just two classes: A.P. Literature, which meets virtually, and a government class, which consists of written assignments that she receives by e-mail. Haddad is planning to take her A.P. exam, though she finds it hard to imagine what the forty-five-minute, cell-phone-friendly version of the test will be like. No one knows how colleges will view it, either.
Life has been emptied of content, and the plot is lost. She texts with friends. She argues with her mom and stepdad a lot. “It’s bringing us closer together,” she half joked. “But it’s O.K.”
【1】What can be known about Haddad from Paragraph 2?
A.She has applied to study abroad.

【題目】 Archeology (考古學(xué))isn't the dusty science it was a generation ago. New technologies that once seemed out of sci-fi are now locating buried traces of buildings and revealing the ruins of cities.
For more than a decade, Sarah Parcak and her team have been on the front line of this revolution. They use satellite images to find and explore ancient sites around the globe. Now they're about to take on a new challenge as they focus Global Xplorer citizen-science project on India.
In 2017, Parcak launched an online platform, called Global Xplorer, to crowd source (群眾外包)the initial assessment of satellite images for signs of cultures from long ago. Anyone in the world with a computer and Internet access could help discover and protect remains of Peru's rich cultural heritage. The results have been surprising. About 80,000 participants from a hundred countries have identified 19,000 sites that were not in Peru's database. The platform for Peru is still running.
If all goes well, the work in India could last for years. "India has had relatively little archaeological work done," Parcak says. Also, the full extent of India's archaeological work has never been mapped completely. Parcak expects her project to make up that. “Wherever we end up going, the crowd's going to be able to see extraordinary things," Parcak says.
Thirty six India's cultural heritage relics are already listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Parcak thinks there could be tens of thousands of as yet unknown sites mapped as part of this project. The discoveries promise to be amazing across the land that has seen a parade of cultures come and go.
In the future, she hopes other countries will contact her to launch their own satellite surveys. The possibilities are huge. Parcak estimates that there are at least 12 million potential archaeological sites yet to be discovered. That means the sky is the limit for her project now that it has gotten off the ground successfully.
【1】What's the purpose of Parcak's project?
A.To interview citizens via the Internet.
B.To dig out more remains of ancient cities.
C.To build databases for unknown cultural heritage.
D.To identify unknown ancient sites through joint efforts.
【2】What do we know about the participants in Peru project?
A.They are Internet-equipped volunteers.
B.They are well-trained voluntary scholars.
C.They are mostly fans of archeology in Peru.
D.They are all archaeologists all over the world.
【3】Why is Parcak's project important to India?
A.India lacks thorough archaeological work.
B.Indians call for the protection of their rich cultures.
C.There's no amazing archaeological discovery in India.
D.India needs more relics listed as World Heritage Sites.
【4】What does the underlined sentence "The possibilities are huge. " in Paragraph 6 mean?
A.Parcak's project will become successful.
B.Few countries will start satellite surveys.
C.There will be amazing discoveries in India.
D.More archaeological sites will be identified.
