The Winner’s Guide to Success

Do you know what makes people successful? To find out the answers, an American reporter recently visited some of the most successful people around the world. 【1】 .

Be responsible for yourself

Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you're giving away your own power. 2 .

Write a plan.

It’s very difficult to try to get what you want without a good plan. It’s just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away. 3 . Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map”, you will enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time.

4 .

Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard---even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.

Never give up.

5 When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

A. A good plan is like a map to you.

B. It seems to us that everyone knows this, but it is easier said than done.

C. Some people achieve success much later in life because they don’t work hard earlier.

D. You're saying, "You have more control over my life than I do."

E. Someone else’s opinions of you don’t have to become your reality.

F. Be willing to pay the price.

G. Here are some keys to success that they give.

【1】G

【2】D

【3】A

【4】F

【5】B

文章接下來(lái)的四部分都是這些成功人物給出的關(guān)于如何取得成功的建議,所以G項(xiàng)“Here are some keys to success that they give.”

【2】D 根據(jù)橫線前句“In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you're giving away your own power.”

If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable.

Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success說(shuō)明我們總是告訴自己不要放棄,但是這樣的話,說(shuō)比做容易,故B項(xiàng)符合上下文。

When a consumer finds that something he or she bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to what the producer says for it, the first step is to present the warranty(保單),or any other records that might help, at the store of buying. In most cases, this action will produce results.

However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction. A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the “higher up” the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favour, taking it as true that he or she has a just right.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of buying, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can show clearly what is wrong with what was bought in question. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example, “The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear” is better than “This stereo(立體音響) does not work.”.

The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the producer, if so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the expected result, the consumer can go a step further. He or she can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a public organization responsible for protecting consumers' rights.

Let's face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain, said Sharon Fowler.

The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.

While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.

Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all. “We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us, said Rogers.

So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate(彌補(bǔ)) for the missing calories.

A related study found some sweeteners (甜味劑) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. “Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas. They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”
