The Making of a Surgeon
How does a doctor recognize the point in time when he is finally a “surgeon”? As my year as chief resident(進修醫(yī)生) drew to a close, I asked myself this question    36   more than one occasion.
The answer, I concluded, was   37   . When you can say to yourself,  “There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently, treat just   38   or better than any other surgeon” — then, and not until then, you are   39   a surgeon. I was   40    that point.
41  , for example, the emergency situations that we met almost every night. The first few months of the year I had   42   the ringing of the telephone. I knew it meant another critical decision to be   43   . Often, after I had told Walt or Larry what to do in a particular       44  , I’d have trouble getting back to sleep. I’d   45   all the facts of the case and, often, wonder   46    I had made a poor decision. More than once at two or three in the   47  , after lying awake for an hour, I’d get out of   48  , dress and drive to the hospital to see the patient myself. It was the only   49   I could find the   50   of mind I needed to relax.
Now, in the last month of my residency,   51   was no longer a problem. Sometimes I still couldn’t be sure of my decision, but I had learned to   52   this as a constant problem for a surgeon. I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I’d made was bound to be a   53    one. It was a nice feeling.
This all sounds conceited(自負的) and I guess it is —   54     a surgeon needs conceit. He needs it to encourage him in trying moments when he’s bothered by the   55   and uncertainties that are part of the practice of medicine. He has to feel that he’s as good as and probably better than any other surgeon in the world. Call it conceit — call it self-confidence; whatever it was, I had it.

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a getting. It was not until in my later thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered a letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post office box for4 a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation.“Wasn’t it you that wrote us a letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?”I said it was.“Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if you have to make one for you. Growing up, I had a scar on my face — a perfect arrow in the center of my cheek, pointing at my left eye. I 36 it when I was three, long before I knew that scars were a 37 thing, especially for a girl. I only knew that my scar brought me 38 and tenderness and candy. As I got older, I began to take 39in my scar, in part to stop people laughing at me, but mainly as a reaction to the thought that I should feel uncomfortable. It’s true. I was 40 the first couple of times someone pointed at my 41 and asked, “What’s that?” or called me “Scarface.” But the more I heard how 42 my scar was, the more I found myself liking it.
When I turned fifteen, my parents — 43 the advice of a doctor — decided it was time to 44 on what was now a thick, shiny red scar.

I did have the operation that summer.

There was something powerful about my scar and the proud person I 55 because of it. I have never been quite so strong since they cut it out.

After years of study, I have known there are only two types of people in this world: those who get to the airport early and those who arrive when the plane is about to take off.
If there were any justice(公正)in this world, early-airport people would be rewarded for doing the right thing. And late-airport people would be punished. But early-airport people get ulcers(潰瘍), heart attacks and bite their fingernails to the bone. Late-airport people almost don’t realize they are flying.
A guy of that kind once said, “Don’t hurry. If you miss your flight, it’s because God doesn’t want you to go.” This is clearly a guy who is never going to get an ulcer.
Early-airport people suffer another “name”. They are called exactly what they are -wimps(窩囊廢). I know. I was an early-airport person for years. “My baggage will get on the plane first,” I told myself. Indeed it would, which made it the last baggage they took off the plane after landing.
Another strange thing: No matter how early I showed up, I was always told that someone had called two or three years ahead of me and asked for the best seat. I thought it was a trick. I thought there was someone in America who called every airline every day and said: “Is that wimp Simon flying somewhere today? If he is , give me his seat.”
After a lifetime arguing with my wife over whether I really have to pack 24 hours in advance and set the alarm clock four hours ahead, I have learned another fact about early-airport people and late –airport people:
They always marry each other.
小題1:We can learn from the passage that     .
A.late-airport persons are often nervous
B.early-airport persons are always at ease during the flight
C.early-airport persons get their baggage first after the landing
D.late-airport persons always take things easy
小題2: Paragraph 5 mainly wants to tell us that      .
A.someone always plays tricks on the writer
B.the airlines usually fool passengers
C.early-airport persons always can’t get good seats
D.the service of airlines is very bad
小題3:This passage is written in order to     .
A.give readers tips about taking a plane
B.offer suggestions about having a good plane trip
C.express the writer’s anxiety about taking a plane
D.show people’s different attitudes toward catching planes
小題4: It could be inferred that the writer’s wife is     .
A.a(chǎn)n early-airport womanB.a(chǎn) late-airport woman
C.a(chǎn) hot-tempered womanD.a(chǎn) sensitive woman
