WHERE TO GO IN AUGUST?

In Europe

August is the height of the peak season! Millions of holidaymakers from around the world invade the beaches and countryside of Southern Europe. The climate is great for travel for just about the whole of the continent with just a few areas affected by extreme heat.

The north of Europe is lovely during this month and summer is the ideal time to visit those countries that are generally considered a little cold and damp such as Ireland.Scotland or Holland.

In Asia

This season is considered the least favourable. The monsoon(季風(fēng))season is at its height over the majority of this area with the exception of only a few countries (Kerala or Tamil Nadu in India,Bali and the southern islands of Indonesia, etc.) Everywhere else a hot,and very damp climate prevails(盛行).

In Africa

The Maghreb countries are crowded with tourists. The climate is hot and dry.The Atlantic coast of Morocco is pleasant thanks to the ocean influence.Further to the south it is the rainy season and it is only along the latitude(緯度)of Kenya and Tanzania that the climate becomes favourable to visitors.

In America

The north is generally hot and dry(sometimes extremely hot in the deserts towards the west of the USA).Central America experiences a short rainy season at this time but towards the south the conditions are more favourable.

To be avoided:

Although July and August are favourable to travel“climatically”speaking,it is often not so pleasant when it comes to quietness and prices. The vast majorities of European countries have their main holidays during this period so the hotels are generally crowded and the prices high for the majority of destinations.

【題目】How to Be a Good Listener to Your Family

Communication is important for strong family relationships. However, if you don't truly listen to others, it can be difficult to communicate. Working on your listening skills can help you communicate better and form stronger bonds.1

Stay in the present.

When listening to a family member, do not let your mind wander to other things. It's important to strive to stay in the present to make your family member feel heard and valued.

2Instead, focus only on what's being said. If you feel your mind wandering, return your thoughts to the speakers’ words.

3

When talking to someone, you often are focusing on what you're going to say next. This tendency can get more intense when talking to a family member. If you're, say, discussing a family problem or disagreement, you may be eager to share your thoughts. However, do not think about how you feel or wish to respond. Focus only on the speaker and their thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Show you're listening using non-verbal cues.

You want the speaker to feel valued. Make sure to show you're listening. You can convey you're paying attention via non-verbal cues. 4 Smiles and laugh when necessary, and keep eye contact.

Make sure the speaker has finished talking before you talk.

It's okay to accept a pause. A couple of seconds of silence in a conversation is not a bad thing, and allows the speaker a chance to fully express themselves. Instead of immediately launching into your response, pause for a moment after the speaker finishes talking.5

People have a natural tendency to pause when they speak. If you notice the speaker has paused, do not assume they've done talking. Give them a few seconds before you respond.

A.Focus on the speaker’s words and not what you'll say next.

B.Never think about other things when someone is talking.

C.You can think of how you will respond later.

D.Thus, it is necessary to make sure to listen actively and here are how.

E.This will allow you to make sure they’ve completely finished talking.

F.Therefore, the following will tell you how to be interactive with the speaker.

G.Nod as the speaker talks.

【題目】Are supermarkets designed to persuade us to buy more? When you enter a supermarket, the manager knows better than you: how you will behave — which way you will walk, where you will look, what will make you buy one product rather than another. When customers go into a shop, they naturally look to their left but move clockwise, towards the right. So supermarket entrances are usually on the left of the building. And the layout is designed to take shoppers around the store, aisle (通道) after aisle, from left to right. 1

Fresh fruit and vegetables are displayed near supermarket entrances. 2 Basic food like sugar and tea, are not put near each other. They are kept in different aisles so customers are taken past other attractive foods before they find what they want. In this way, shoppers are encouraged to buy products that they do not really want.

People walk quickly through narrow aisles, but they move slowly in wide aisles and give more attention to the products. One best-selling position for products is at the end of aisles, because shoppers slow down to turn into the next aisle. 3 Supermarkets are paid by food companies to put their products in each of these high-selling places.

4 While parents are waiting to pay, children reach for the sweets and put them in the trolley.

More is bought from a fifteen-foot display of one type of product (e.g. cereal, washing powder) than from a ten-foot one. 5 They do not like to buy from shelves with few products on them because they feel there is something wrong with those products that are there.

A. Another is on shelves at eye level.

B. Sweets are often placed at children’s eye level at the checkout.

C. There are always enough products prepared for customers in the supermarket.

D. Then shoppers will pay attention to all the products.

E. This gives the impression that only healthy food is sold in the shop.

F. Customers also buy more when shelves are full than when they are half empty.

G. Supermarkets are one of children’s favorite places and they are also big consumers.
