Dear Mandy,
I'm not doing well in my lessons at school, especial in maths. My dad says I must try hard because he wants me go to university. He thinks I'm lazy, but it's not true. I work really hard, often study late into the night! I've tried to talk to my mother, but she always said I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother doesn't study very hard, and he always gets excellent grades. It's not fair! The only thing I like it is art. My teacher says I'm the best student she's had for year. When I told my dad,all he said was,“ You mustn 't waste your time in art. You must focus your mind on your lessons! ”I'm feeling quite puzzling as to what to do now. Would you please help me out?
Thanks a lot!
Yours sincerely,
Lisa
【1】espefial→especially
【2】me后加to
【3】sduty→studying
【4】said→says
【5】like→as
【6】and→but
【7】it去掉
【8】year→years
【9】in→on
【10】puzzling→puzzled
故go前加to。
study→studying studying作work hard的伴隨狀語。
【4】said→says 考查時態(tài)。 said→says 根據(jù)前后語境應用一般現(xiàn)在時,故said改為says。
【5】like→as 考查狀語從句。 like→as like前有as,as...as...
【6】and→but 考查連詞。 and→but 前后分句是轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系,應將and改為but。
去掉it I like是thing的定語從句,引導詞that作like的賓語已經(jīng)省略,不能再出現(xiàn)it作賓語,故去掉it。
【8】year→years 考查名詞。 year→years for years好多年。故將year改為years。
【9】in→on 考查介詞。 in→on/over waste time on/over sth. 故in改為on/over。

Knowing Yourself
What are your interests? Abilities? Skills? 【2】 The results may surprise you! These can be useful, but they’re not the last word.
Investigating
Investigating occupations is much more difficult. For most people, there isn’t just one ‘right’ job, but several that could be satisfying. 【3】 Talk to people who have occupations that interest you. Find out what they like and dislike about their job.

To whom it may concern,
My husband Jim and I got married in 1965. For the first ten years of our marriage, I was very happy to stay home and raise our three children. Then about four years ago, our youngest child went to school, and I thought I might go back to work.
Jim was very supportive and helped me to make my decision. He started to do all the things I used to do around the house, and said he thought I could be a great success in business.
After several weeks of job hunting, I found my present job, which is working for a small public relation firm. At first, my husband was proud of me and would tell his friends, “My clever little wife can run that company she’s working for.”
But, as his joking words were becoming reality, Jim stopped talking to me about my job. I have received several promotions and pay increases, and I am now making more money than he is. I can buy my own clothes and a new car. Because of our combined incomes, Jim can do things that we had always dreamed of doing, but we don’t do these things because he is unhappy.
We fought about little things, and Jim is very critical of me in front of our friends. For the first time in our marriage, I think there is a possibility that our marriage may come to an end.
I love Jim very much, and I don’t want him to feel inferior(較差的), but I also love my job. I think I can be a good wife and a working woman, but I don’t know how. Can you give me some advice? Will I have to choose one or the other or can I keep both my husband and my new career?
Please help.
Yours,
Mary

The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(維生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part- particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold- weather root vegetables- was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call.
The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7:00 am to 1 p.m, rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets. Baskets of perfect red strawberries, the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.
Disappointed by many a broken, vine-ripened(蔓上成熟的) promise, I’ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they’re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal- and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota
Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where- luckily for me- I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu, I knew I’d be ordering every tomato on it.
