The mayor of Flint offered Miss Michigan Emily Sioma high praise on Tuesday for speaking out at this weekend's Miss America conference about the city's water crisis.

“I was really excited for her to do that," Mayor Karen Weaver told TMZ. “I think she was very brave because so many times you say who you are and where you're from and just general information. For her to take that opportunity and use her platform and use her voice to speak up about what‘s going on in Michigan and in Flint, in particular, was just amazing. ”

Emily Sioma,24,introduced herself on stage on Sunday by saying,“From the state with 84 percent of the U. S. fresh water but none for its residents to drink. I am Miss Michigan Emily Sioma.” The brief ‘speech was a reference to Flint, a town with lead-filled drinking water.

Weaver said Sioma's decision to speak about the Flint water crisis demonstrated her impressive character. “I applaud her for being a brave young woman. And it also shows you that she’s not a selfish person," Weaver said. “She could have talked only about herself, but she chose to use this opportunity to bring attention to, and keep attention on, what’s going on in Flint, what’s going on with water quality standards what's going on with this broken infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) that we have across the country. "

Ratings showed that 4. 3 million viewers watched the ABC program. Although Miss New York Nia Imani Franklin ultimately won the competition, many Twitter users quickly got behind Sioma, who did not make the final 15, after her introduction.

“Emily Sioma wanted to make an impact,” one Twitter user wrote on Sunday. Regardless of whether you agree with what she said or not- she is shining light on a pressing issue that we have in our state and that is still not solved. That, is a Miss America."

根據(jù)第三段第一句中的“From the state with 84 percent of the U. S. fresh water but none for its residents to drink(該州擁有美國84%的淡水,但卻沒有可供居民飲用的水)和第四段第四句中的“she chose to use this opportunity to bring attention to, and keep attention on, what’s going on in Flint, what’s going on with water quality standards(她選擇利用這個機會來引起人們的注意,并持續(xù)關(guān)注Flint正在發(fā)生的事情,水質(zhì)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)正在發(fā)生的事情)可推知,Sioma在會議中提出了美國城市面臨的水質(zhì)問題,由此可知,此處畫線詞water crisis應(yīng)指美國城市的水質(zhì)問題,與D項意思相近。故選D。

2細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第四段第二、三句中的“I applaud her for being a brave young woman. And it also shows you that she’s not a selfish person.(我為她的勇敢喝彩。這也表明她不是一個自私的人。)可知,市長認為Emily Sioma是一個勇敢時且大公無私的人。 故選B。

3推理判斷題。通讀第五段可知,雖然Sioma沒有獲得冠軍,但是有許多人都支持她。再結(jié)合第六段中的 Emily Sioma wanted to make an impact, one Twitter user wrote on Sunday. Regardless of whether you agree with what she said or not she is shining light on a pressing issue"(“Emily Sioma想要制造影響,”一名Twitter用戶周日寫道。不管你是否同意她所說的,她正在解決一個緊迫的問題)可推知,作者寫第五段主要是為了強調(diào)Sioma的影響力。故選C。

4主旨大意題。通讀全文可知,本文主要介紹了Sioma大膽地提出了美國大城市用水質(zhì)量存在的問題, Flint市市長高度贊揚了她。再根據(jù)最后一段最后兩句中的“she is shining light on a pressing issue that we have in our state and that is still not solved. That, is a Miss America.(她在我們州的一個緊迫問題上發(fā)出了希望之光,而這個問題仍然沒有得到解決。這就是美國小姐。)可知,D項“美國小姐”能概括本文的主旨,適合做本文的標(biāo)題。故選D。

【題目】 Living with your parents has its benefits at least when it comes to raising your kids― their grandkids. Two new studies add to the evidence that grandmothers can enhance the survival of grandchildren. That is, unless grandma's too old or lives too far away.

Humans are unusual in that the females live long past the age at which they stop having babies. Patrick Bergeron, professor of biology at Bishop's University in Quebec, said that most of the organisms will reproduce up to their very last moment. This increase is often explained by the so-called "grandmother effect". He thinks there could still be a benefit for women who stop having babies to increase their genetic footprint by helping their daughters to raise larger families.

To explore the "grandmother effect" hypothesis (假設(shè)),Bergeron and his colleagues examined nearly 200 years' worth of French-Canadian population records from the 17th and 18th centuries. "At the time, life was tough. In some years, a third o the kids were not even making it to one year of age.” But the researchers found that having a grandmother still alive was a definite plus."Families with grandmothers alive were larger by about two and the survival of these grandchildren to age 15 was much improved."

This beneficial effect was only seen when the matriarchs (女家長)lived nearby. That role is tougher for them to fulfills as they get older in poor health, which brings us to the second study. The researchers found that the benefits associated with having a grandmother on hand depended on her age. Once manna hit 75, the grandchild survival benefit disappeared. This was almost certainly due to some form of indirect resource competition, though, rather than wickedness (邪惡)on the part of co- resident grandmothers.

So a healthy grandma helps make for a healthy grandchild. If ',over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house" isn't too long a trip.

1What's the second paragraph mainly about?

A.Differences between animals and human beings.

B.Disadvantages of living with grandmas

C.Grandmothers' influence on the kids.

D.What's called“grandmother effect”.

2How does the writer describe about the French-Canadian population more than three hundred years ago?

A.By voicing opinions.B.By providing facts.

C.By giving examples.D.By telling stories.

3What can we infer from the second study?

A.Society should be concerned about the old women.

B.Grandmothers over 75 years old are unwilling to help.

C.Some grandmothers may occupy kids' relative recourses.

D.Some grandmothers are getting wicked after they are old.

4Which of the following can be the most helpful grandmother according to the passage?

A.A healthy one living nearby. ,

B.A healthy one living abroad.

C.An old one living in a nursing home.

D.A knowledgeable one living together.

If you live in Shanghai, you might have taken a “l(fā)esson” in sorting (分類) garbage, as the city introduced new garbage-sorting regulations on July 1, 2019.

As China’s first city to carry out strict regulations(規(guī)則) on garbage sorting and recycling, Shanghai requires its residents to sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.

Since the regulation took effect, the amount of total daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced by an average of 15,500 tons, dropping 26 percent from the end of 2018, while the average daily weight of recyclables hits 4,500 tons, five times higher than the end of 2018, according to the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau.

The city also rebuilt 21,000 waste-sorting stations and more than 40,000 waste bins have been updated. The city’s waste collection and transportation system is complete, according to the bureau.

“Proper waste sorting is to protect the environment and save natural resources,” said Deng Jianping, director of the bureau. “Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term solutions to garbage management.”

However, there have also been some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, as they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping (傾倒). According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin.

This separation is necessary, as it ensures that the wet garbage will decompose (分解) properly and become useful organic (有機的) waste, the bureau said.

Plastic bags can affect this process. Some people in Shanghai are instead using paper bags that can biodegrade(生物降解)or plastic containers that can be washed and reused, according to Xinhua.

2According to the passage, people in Shanghai are asked to sort their garbage into four categories, and what are they?(不多于8個單詞)

3Why should we sort garbage?

Recently, as the British doctor Robert Winston took a train from London to Manchester, he found himself having to listen to a loud conversation of a fellow passenger woman. Boiling with anger, Winston took her picture and sent it to his more than 40,000 followers on the Tweet. By the time the train reached the station in Manchester, some journalists were waiting for the woman. And when they showed her the doctor's messages, she used just one word to describe Winston's actions: rude.

Winston's tale is a good example of increasing rudeness, fueled by social media in our age. Studies show that rudeness spreads quickly and virally, almost like the common cold. Just witnessing rudeness makes it far more likely that we, in turn, will be rude later on. Once infected, we are more aggressive, less creative and worse at our jobs. The only way out is to make a conscious decision to do so. We must have the courage to call it out, face to face. We must say, "Just stop." For Winston, that would have meant approaching the woman, telling her that her conversation was frustrating other passengers and politely asking her to speak more quietly or make the call at another time.

The anger we feel at the rude behavior of a stranger can drive us to do out-of-place things. Research discovered that the acts of revenge (報復(fù)) people had taken ranged from the ridiculous to the disturbing. Winston did shine a spotlight on the woman's behavior—but in a way that shamed her.

When we see rudeness occur in public places, we must step up and say something. And we can do it with grace, by handling it without a bit of aggression and without being rude ourselves. Because once rude people can see their actions through the eyes of others, they are far more likely to end the rudeness themselves. As this wave of rudeness rises, civilization needs civility

1Robert Winston’s reaction to the woman’ behavior at the train can be described as ________.

A.a way of returning good for evilB.an answer to the call of the journalists

C.a good example of stopping rudenessD.an act of answering rudeness with rudeness

2Being infected with rudeness can possibly lead to ________.

A.wiser decisionsB.more frustrated passengers

C.poorer work performanceD.more face-to-face communication

3What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.What to say to a rude person.B.Civilization Calls for Civility.

C.How to Fix Rudeness Spread OnlineD.Rude Behavior Makes a Rude Man
