【原文】
W: Take a seat, please.
M: Thank you.
W: You’ve got your Bachelor of Arts in English and now you want to get your Master's in education, is that right?
M: That's right.
W: You'll need 30 credits, 15 from the English Department and 15 from the Education Department.
M: I have no idea about it. Could you explain it in more detail?
W: Well, since you have had English Literature, you should also take American Literature. Your transcript indicates that your English background is strong, so I don't think you will have any problem with it.
M: How many credits can I get for each course?
W: Three credits for each course.
M: Frankly speaking, I don't want to fail any classes, so I prefer a somewhat lighter program at the beginning.
W: You are quite right. In fact, you must maintain a "B" average to earn your Master's Degree.
M: What happens if I get a "C"?
W: You will need an "A" to balance it.
M: I'd better go slowly but surely.
W: That's a good idea.

【題目】While everyone overthinks situations once in a while, some people are troubled by thinking all the time. Overthinkers rethink conversations they had yesterday, second-guess every decision they make, and imagine disastrous outcomes all day. Their minds are like a movie where they imagine their car going off the road or they replay distressing events over and over again. 【1】
Keep the focus on problem-solving
Keeping the focus on your problems isn’t helpful, but looking for solutions is. If it’s something you have some control over, consider how you can prevent the problem or challenge yourself to identify five potential solutions.
If it’s something you have no control over—like a natural disaster—think about the strategies you can use to cope with it. 【2】
Schedule time for reflection
Worrying about your problems for long periods of time isn’t productive, but brief reflection can be helpful. Thinking about how you could do things differently or recognizing potential traps to your plan, could help you perform better in the future.
Add 15 minutes of “thinking time” into your daily schedule. During that time let yourself worry, or think about whatever you want. 【3】
Learning mindfulness skills
It’s impossible to rehash(反復(fù)推敲)yesterday or worry about tomorrow when you’re living in the present. Mindfulness will help you become more aware of the here and now.
【4】 There are classes, books, apps, courses, and videos available to help you learn mindfulness skills.
【5】
Do this in your brain by changing your activity. Exercise, engage yourself in a conversation on a completely different subject, or work on a project that draws away your attention. Doing something different will put an end to the negative thoughts.
A. Change your attitude.
B. Change the channel.
C. When your time is up, move onto something else.
D. Just like any other skill, mindfulness takes practice, but over time, it can decrease overthinking.
E. Overthinking can become such a habit that you don't even recognize when you’re doing it.
F. There are four tips that can help you stop overthinking.
G. Focus on the things you can control, like your attitude and effort.

【題目】 Living with your parents has its benefits at least when it comes to raising your kids― their grandkids. Two new studies add to the evidence that grandmothers can enhance the survival of grandchildren. That is, unless grandma's too old or lives too far away.
Humans are unusual in that the females live long past the age at which they stop having babies. Patrick Bergeron, professor of biology at Bishop's University in Quebec, said that most of the organisms will reproduce up to their very last moment. This increase is often explained by the so-called "grandmother effect". He thinks there could still be a benefit for women who stop having babies to increase their genetic footprint by helping their daughters to raise larger families.
To explore the "grandmother effect" hypothesis (假設(shè)),Bergeron and his colleagues examined nearly 200 years' worth of French-Canadian population records from the 17th and 18th centuries. "At the time, life was tough. In some years, a third o the kids were not even making it to one year of age.” But the researchers found that having a grandmother still alive was a definite plus."Families with grandmothers alive were larger by about two and the survival of these grandchildren to age 15 was much improved."
This beneficial effect was only seen when the matriarchs (女家長(zhǎng))lived nearby. That role is tougher for them to fulfills as they get older in poor health, which brings us to the second study. The researchers found that the benefits associated with having a grandmother on hand depended on her age. Once manna hit 75, the grandchild survival benefit disappeared. This was almost certainly due to some form of indirect resource competition, though, rather than wickedness (邪惡)on the part of co- resident grandmothers.
So a healthy grandma helps make for a healthy grandchild. If ',over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house" isn't too long a trip.
