11.As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less?If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain?Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study,Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it.Later, the second group remembered the information better.People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夾).Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information.Rather, they remember how to find it.This is called"transactive memory (交互記憶)".
According to Sparrow,we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is,people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

A.Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the formation.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
34.In transactive memory,peopleD.
A.keep the information in mind
B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer
D.remember how to find the information
35.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?A
A.We are using memory differently.

解答 A C D A
32.A 推理判斷題.根據(jù)文章第一段的句子"Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how."可知這篇文章用兩個(gè)問(wèn)題開(kāi)始來(lái)介紹主題.故選A.
33.C 推理判斷題.根據(jù)文章第二段的句子"People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it."可知第一組的人沒(méi)有努力去記這些信息.故選C.
34.D 推理判斷題.根據(jù)文章第三段的句子"When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information.Rather, they remember how to find it.This is called"transactive memory (交互記憶)""可知在交互記憶中人們記住怎么找到信息.故選D.
35.A 推理判斷題.根據(jù)文章最后一段的句子"This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing."可知Sparrow研究中表明互聯(lián)網(wǎng)的影響是我們使用記憶的方法不同了.故選A.

7.Cell Phones:Hang Up or Keep Talking?
Millions of people are using cell phones today.In many places it is actually considered unusual not to use one.(31)CThey find that the phones are more than
a means of communication----having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and
connected.
The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professionals worried.Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones.In England,there has been a serious debate about this issue.Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas.(32)F
On the other hand,why do some medical studies show changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones?Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning(掃描)equipment.In one case,a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss.(33)DHe would often forget the name of his own son.This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day,every day of his working week,for a couple of years.His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use,but his employer's doctor didn't agree.
(34)G The answer is radiation.High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones.Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation,but they say the amount is too small to worry about.
As the discussion about their safety continues,it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often.(35)AUse your mobile phone only when you really need it.Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient,especially in emergencies.In the future,mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health.So for now,it's wise not to use your mobile phone too often.
A.Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time.
B.They will possibly affect their benefits.
C.In many countries,cell phones are very popular with young people.
D.He couldn't remember even simple tasks.
E.What do the doctors worry about?
F.They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health.
G.What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful?

2.Trees are useful to man in three important ways:they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought (干旱) and flood.
Unluckily,in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important.Man wants to make money from trees,so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.And also,he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees.So the forests slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse:for where there are trees,their roots(根)break up soil-make the rain in-and also bind (固定) the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-sil.When all the top-soil is gone,nothing is left but
useless desert.

6.When someone says,"Well,I guess I'll have to go to face the music,"It doesn't mean he is planning to go to a concert.It is something far less pleasant,like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that,and why you did not do this or that.Sour (刺耳)music,indeed,but it has to be faced.
The phrase"to face the music"is familiar to every American,young and old.It is at least 100years old.Where did the expression come from?
The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper.He said-in 1851-that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage.After they got their clue(暗示)to go on,they often said,"It's time to go to face the music."And that is exactly what they did-face the orchestra which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly,especially if he forgot his lines.But he had to go out.
So,"to face the music"came to mean:having to go through something,no matter how unpleasant the experience might be,because you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army.Men had to face inspection(檢閱)by their leader.The soldiers worried about how well they looked.Was their equipment clean-shiny enough to pass inspection?Still,the men had to go out,and face the music of the band,as well as the inspection.What else could they do?

C.he had to face the unfriendly audience
D.the audience might be mostly his friends
27."To face the music"is also used to mean that soldiers were not willingB.
A.to be examined about their equipment
B.to be inspected by their leader
