【題目】 Almost everyone has heard the expression “the calm before the storm”. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.
British sailors created the phrase in the late 1600s. They noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static and the winds would drop. But why is it often so calm before a storm?
Science has given us the answer. According to US website How Stuff Works, a calm period occurs because many storms, such as hurricanes and tornadoes (龍卷風(fēng)), draw in all the warm and damp air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car”.
Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm, dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm. This same process also causes “the eye of the storm” in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong winds moving in a circle.
The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is. First, count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder. Roughly 3 seconds equal 1 kilometer. So, for example, if you count 9 seconds, the storm is about 3 kilometers away. A good judgement is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.
However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms break after calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and cold winds.
So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That’s the most reliable and sensible way to predict the next display of nature’s temper.
【1】The underlined word “static” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.violent
B.warm
C.still
D.changeable
【2】What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To find out how a storm comes into being.
B.To explain why a peaceful period occurs before a storm.
C.To prove whether the research on storm clouds is correct.
D.To show how dangerous a storm can be in certain situations.
【3】If there’re 15 seconds between a flash of lightning and a thunder clap, how far is the storm away?
A.About 3 kilometers.
B.About 5 kilometers.
C.About 9 kilometers.
D.About 15 kilometers.
【4】What can be learned from the passage?
A.Storms don’t always blow up after calm.
B.Storms have a bad influence on our life.
C.Weather reports may fail to predict a storm.
D.Heavy storms don’t usually last a long time.

【題目】How to Form a Positive Reading Habit
Books are a source of joy, learning, insight and imagination. How we choose what to read says a lot about our preferences and passions. 【1】
Give old favorites a re-read
There is a particular kind of pleasure that comes with easing open a well-worn book, flipping through pages you have thumbed before, maybe multiple times. 【2】 It can bring you back to the time in your life when you last met those characters. You’re left with a rich reflection on who you were, who you are and where you turn for meaning and inspiration.
Learn something new
If you are a lover of novels, think about what your favorites have in common.【3】 That can send you down a glorious rabbit hole of non-fiction books that will brighten your understanding of times, places and people who already live in your imagination.
【4】
Book clubs are positive on so many levels, not least of which is that they open your mind to books you might not otherwise have considered. If you don’t belong to one — and even if you do — try to think about your reading choices in a public way. Ask friends what they are reading and go with any recommendations that interest you.
Give yourself permission to move on
Sometimes you just can’t get through a book — and that’s okay. Just like living positively means acknowledging when it’s time to let go of something that isn’t serving you well, reading positively means giving yourself permission to close a book that isn’t keeping you interested or inspired. 【5】. The positive pleasure of reading is indeed unending.
A.Get social
B.Set up a book club
C.There are unlimited choices to turn to instead, after all
D.Here are some tips for making reading a positive habit in your life
E.Reading books that you enjoy helps maintain your habit and become a life-long reader
F.Re-reading favorite books can do more than bring you back into beloved worlds and stories
G.A particular time in history, region of the world or type of character may become a new theme

【題目】As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.
Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping (錄像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”
The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”
【1】The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to _________.
A.show the relationship between parents and children
B.teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table
C.report on the findings of a study
D.give information about family problems
【2】Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because _________.
A.they are busy serving food to their children
B.they are busy keeping order at the dinner table
C.they have to pay more attention to younger children
D.they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family
【3】By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children _________.
A.have to help their parents to serve dinner
B.get the least attention from the family
C.are often kept away from the dinner table
D.find it hard to keep up with other children
【4】Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?
A.It is important to have the right food for children.
B.It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.
C.Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.
D.Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner.

【題目】 With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for the final leg of the delivery process, from the store or local distribution center to the customer. The latest to join the trend is e-commerce giant Amazon. Following a successful eight-month test run in Snohomish County, Washington, the company’s Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, California, since August 6, 2019.
The six-wheeled Scout is about the size of a large cooler with the capacity to carry small or medium-sized packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular walking pace, has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles, such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway.
To accelerate Scout’s development and bring it nationwide sooner, the company has created several detailed virtual maps of American suburbs and conducted trial deliveries to homes there.
Though Amazon has not shown how Scout ensures the delivery is picked up by the right person, it most likely requires the customers to apply a unique code, texted to them prior to the delivery, to unlock the store box. Also unclear is the number of deliveries Scout can complete before its battery needs to be recharged. Though the initial tests are being conducted with a human for company, the robot will be autonomous in the future. Its location, however, will be tracked at all times—if someone attempts to steal Scout, Amazon employees will be instantly sensed.
However, the eco-friendly robots are unable to climb stairs or open gates, which means that they can only reach consumers who live on the ground level. Additionally, the robots are unable to leave packages at the front door if the customers are not home. Whether these problems get resolved remains to be seen. For now, it appears that humans will still be needed to achieve the ever-growing demand for home and office deliveries.
【1】Which of the following descriptions about Scout is right?
A.They can be powered themselves.B.They are strong enough to carry big things.
C.They can run with their six wheels.D.They can avoid obstacles ahead.
【2】What about Scout is still confusing to common people?
A.How many deliveries it can do on a full charge.B.Whether it can climb stairs or open gates.
C.How it recognizes the right owner of the things.D.How long it will take to get it fully charged.
【3】What does the underlined phrase “prior to” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.due toB.afterC.in front ofD.before
【4】What is the author’s opinion about delivery robots according to the last paragraph?
A.They are not easily available.B.They have some limitations.
C.They will replace humans soon.D.They won’t be well accepted.
