Maybe many people in the world can not believe this, but the world's most expensive coffee is pretty terrible. Black Ivory coffee is made from beans which are often eaten and digested (消化) by Thai elephants, and the price of it is at $ 1,100 per kilogram. Isn’t it very funny?
As we all know elephants in Thailand are very good at painting, but we don't know they also make great coffee at all. People can enjoy the rare (稀有 的) Black Ivory at only four resorts (度假村) around the world, and there are three in the Maldives and only one in Thailand. However, people in the special Anantara Resorts come up with an unusual idea of making coffee from elephant-digested beans. Why do they use this way to make the great coffee?
It seems like a very terrible and boring idea, but in fact this idea is correctly right in theory (理論) . According to the research, enzymes (酶類) in the elephant's stomach are able to break down the proteins (蛋白質(zhì)) in the coffee beans, and because proteins are one of the main ingredients of its bitterness (苦 味) ,less protein means less of the bitterness.

Vegetarianism (素食主義) is increasing in the UK as more and more British people are deciding not to eat meat and animal products. According to the Vegetarian Society,2. 000 people are giving up meat and “ going veggie ” in Britain every week. In 1989 a survey showed that 3% of the UK’s population was vegetarian. A more recent survey shows that 5. 7% of the population was vegetarian. In numbers this means there are over 3 million vegetarians in the UK today and vegetarians (people who don't eat meat) , and vegans ( people who don't eat or use any animal products) are becoming increasingly common in the UK culture.
So why are Brits cutting out meat from their diets? Many vegetarians and vegans choose not to eat meat or animal products for ethical (道德的) reasons. They are unhappy about the bad treatment of the animals and the effects of meat and fish production on the environment. Worries about food safety cause many people to stop eating meat. Others choose to change their diets in this way to improve their general health.
Another rising trend in the UK’s food culture is related to how our food is produced. Many people are rejecting (拒絕) GMF (轉(zhuǎn)基因食品) and intensive farming procedures (集約農(nóng)業(yè)過程) . What exactly does “ organic (有機(jī)的) ” mean? Organic food is produced in a more “natural” way. Organic farmers use no,or very few chemicals, pesticides (農(nóng)藥) or fertilizers (肥料) .
Three out of every four households in the UK now buy some types of organic food. Some people buy organic meat, fruit and vegetables from farmers? markets, where local farmers sell their products directly to the consumer. Many people buy organic produce in their local supermarkets. Although it's often more expensive, fans of organic food say it tastes much better!
As with vegetarianism, people choose organic food for health reasons or because of concern for the environment.

Do You Need to “Edit Your Friends”?
Is your mobile phone directory full of phone numbers of people you don't really want to talk to? Do you go out with people from work or school more often than with your real friends? Do you say yes to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to? If you answer yes to at least two of these questions, then perhaps you need to “edit your friends”.
Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at school. The result is that we don't have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier,it becomes more important to spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us.
Who are the friends you need to edit? A few years ago I read a book about how to get rid of unnecessary possessions (物品) . It said you should ask yourself about each thing you have: Is it useful? Do I really like it? Do I feel better every time I look at it? If the answer is no to any one of those questions, you should throw it away. Maybe we should ask similar questions about our friends. What kind of friends will you probably need to edit? Sometimes it's an old friend. Somebody who you used to have a lot in common with, but who, when you meet now,you have very little or nothing to say to. Or it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up too much of your time. Next time one of these people calls you and suggests a meeting, think “Do I really want to see this person?” and if the answer is no,say no,and make an excuse. That way you’ll have more time to spend with your real friends.
1. People need to edit their friends when.
A. they have moved to a different area
B. they have no time with their real fiends
C. some of their friends don't talk very much
D. their friends are people from work or school
2. What does the word “edit” in the passage mean?
A. Examine and choose.
B. Believe and help.
C. Miss and see.
D. Call and meet.
3. People don't need to edit their .
A. real friends
B. old friends
C. young friends
D. new friends
4. What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3 ?
A. We should often throw some possessions.
B. Most of our friends are not necessary at all.
C. We shouldn’t treat our friends as possessions.
D. We should ask ourselves who our real friends are.

The shock of the recent earthquake in Pakistan has brought another shock : the rise of a small, mysterious island, coming out from the water.
In the aftershock (余震) of the earthquake, people living in Gawadar, near the southwest coast, began to see a strange sight. They looked out into the Arabian Sea and saw a mountain-like shape coming out of the water. ‘‘ I could see this gray,dome-shaped (穹頂形狀的) body in the distance, like a giant whale,” Bahram Baloch,a local journalist, told the BB C. “Hundreds of people had gathered to watch it in surprise. ”
When the earthquake happened, the force was so strong that it moved the sea floor, releasing gas. This gas pushed the seabed, mostly rock and sand, upward and out of the water. This is how mud volcanoes (火山) are formed. The island that measures about 20 meters high,30 meters long and 90 meters wide is actually the tip of the mud volcano.
Is it safe? Although people have visited this new island, scientists have found dangerous gas coming from the newly formed island. “Our team found bubbles rising from the surface of the island, which caught fire when a match was lit,” said Mohammad Danish,a scientist,to Universe Today.
These mud volcanoes are not rare. But it's striking because this one has popped up in a populated area, and not far out in the sea. However,it's not expected to last very long. Most of these mud volcanoes are swept back under the sea within one year.
