【題目】
Red squirrels were common(常見的) in British forests and countryside. But there are fewer than 140,000 red squirrels ______ now and most of them are in Scotland. However, grey squirrels are now so common that many people ______ them. They can hunt and kill them legally(合法).
The two types of squirrels look similar. They both have a long ______, which helps the squirrel to jump from tree to tree, and the same large eyes, small ears and powerful back legs. ______, the grey squirrel has a clear advantage(優(yōu)勢) over the red. The red squirrel has a head-and-body length of 19 to 23 cm and a tail length of 15 to 20 cm. But the grey squirrel is a ______ animal. The head-and-body length is between 23 and 30 cm. This size may let them store more fat and ______ them to live in a hard winter.
So ______ is the number of red squirrels smaller than that of grey squirrels? Size is one reason, but there are others. Red squirrels live high up in ______, while grey squirrels spend more of their time on the ground. This means the missing of forests greatly influences(影響) the red squirrel’s population. Another reason is the grey squirrel’s ______ to get food easily from people. Like the fox, the grey squirrel ______ live in towns and cities. The other problem for the red squirrel is illness, which is fatal to them.

根據(jù)下一句“they can hunt and kill them legally.”可知殺死灰松鼠是合法的,由此證明人們不喜歡它們。故選A。
help sb. (to) do sth. 意為“幫助某人做某事”。根據(jù)語境,故選B。
【7】句意:所以為什么紅松鼠小于灰松鼠呢?
why 為什么;what 什么;when 什么時候;how 怎樣。下文內(nèi)容介紹了各種原因,故選A。
【8】句意:紅松鼠高高地生活在樹上,而灰松鼠則把更多的時間花在地上。
trees 樹;hills 山;skies 天空;clouds 云。天與地對立,且根據(jù)句意,故選A。
【9】句意:灰松鼠成功的另一個原因是其從人類容易的獲得食物的能力。
quality 質(zhì)量;hobby 愛好;ability 能力;look 看。the ability to do sth. 意為“做某事的能力”。根據(jù)語境,故選C。
【10】句意:和狐貍一樣,灰松鼠也能生活在城鎮(zhèn)里。
can’t 不(可)能;need 需要;needn’t 不必;can 能,可以。前面提到它的能力,此處也是在說它的優(yōu)勢,所以是“可以”生活在城鎮(zhèn)中。故選D。

【題目】
What is the best-selling book in the world? Is it the Harry Potter series or Secret Garden? According to the Guinness World Records, the Xinhua Dictionary, published by the Commercial Press in China, is the world’s most popular dictionary and the best-selling book.
In 1950, Chinese language experts(專家) andscholars, Wei Jiangong and Ye Shengtao, started to edit(編輯) the Xinhua Dictionary. There was a lot of discussion, research and paper work. Some hand scripts (稿件) were checked again and again like compositions, People’s Daily reported. Many people’s hard work and interesting stories went into making the dictionary.
In 1953, the first Xinhua Dictionary was published. Today, 567 million copies of the dictionary have been sold worldwide.
However, revisions (修訂) to the dictionary continue to be made. According to Yu Guilin from Commercial Press, editors(編輯) usually summarize (總結(jié)) the meaning of words again while revising. If the example sentences are out of date, editors need to have experiences and make new examples. “To give a correct explanation of the word ‘焗油 (deep condition)’ , one editor went to a barber shop (理發(fā)店) to experience it for himself,” Yu told the Beijing Times. So far, the Xinhua Dictionary has been revised 11 times.
To keep up with the times, some popular and widely used internet words are also added to the dictionary. For example, in the 11th edition, the phrases “曬工資 (show off salary)” and “曬照片 (show off pictures)” were included.
All these efforts create the “National Dictionary” of China. The Xinhua Dictionary is not only a useful tool for generations of Chinese people. It also helps foreigners who are learning the Chinese language and culture.
