Ronny’s Book

Ronny looked like every other kid in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as the Reading Mom. However, Ronny was different from his classmates in other ways. He had a speech problem so he couldn’t _______ like other kids in his grade.

I worked with all the students in Ronny’s class one by one to improve their reading skills. On the days when it was Ronny’s _______, I’d give him a silent smile, and he’d fly out of his chair. He sat very close to me and opened the book as if he was opening a treasure nobody had ever seen.

I watched his _____move slowly under each letter as he struggled (努力) to read out. Every time he ___ to read a word with a strange pronunciation, the biggest smile would spread across his face and his eyes would shine with _______. It broke my heart each and every time.

A few weeks _______ the school year ended, I held an awards ceremony (頒獎典禮). I_______ Ronny with a book — one of those Little Golden Books that only cost $5. Tears ran down his face as he held the book close to him and went _______ to his seat. I stayed with the class for the rest of the day. Ronny never let go of (放開) the _____, not once. It never left his hands.

A few days later, I returned to the school to visit. I _______ Ronny on a chair near the playground, the book open in his lap. His teacher said, “He hasn’t put that book down since you gave it to him. Do you know that’s his _______ book he’s ever actually owned?”

Keeping back my tears, I walked towards Ronny, placed my hand on his shoulder and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?” And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me more_______ than I’d ever thought possible from him. The pages were already dog-eared (卷角的), like the book had been read thousands of ___ already. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said with great satisfaction(滿意), “_______ book!”

What a powerful contribution the writer of that Little Golden Book had made in the life of a disadvantaged child. At that moment, I knew I would become _______ about my own writing and do what that writer had done, and probably still does — care enough to write a story that changes a child’s life, care enough to make a difference.

No matter when we meet with difficulty or failure, teachers, parents or others often say to us or perhaps we say to ourselves, “Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination(決心). A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.

One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will hardly achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt(嘗試) at something new, so we should not feel disappointed(失望的) and should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail, we will not be able to develop new skills and grow.

Another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that we can not make the same ones. If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted.

Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.

In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. Whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will help us to become better and more confident. Furthermore, if we give up, we have no chance of reaching our goals any more, but if we keep making great efforts, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.

"Tammy! Come here, please! Mother needs your help in the kitchen." Her father called out to her.

Tammy was in her room, getting ready to do her homework. "Yes, Daddy!" she replied. "I'll be right there."

She hurried out of her bedroom and down the hallway. She was only nine years old. Her elder sister, Ella, had just moved away to go to a performing arts high school in another city. Her brother, Harry, was in middle school and always got home late. With Ella leaving home, Tammy was expected to do a lot more than she had ever done before, especially now, because her mother was ill.

Her father was in the kitchen. "Tammy, I know you usually do your homework right now, but with things being different, we all have to change a little bit. I'll help you and Harry with your homework later on, OK?"

Her father had an apron(圍裙) on over his clothes, and he looked kind of funny. He was doing the dishes and he always splashed(濺出) water all over when he did that. After helping her father with the dishes, Tammy helped set the table.

After supper, her father helped her and Harry with their homework, and then they played a board game so that their mother could lie down for a while.

The next morning, Tammy got up early on her own because she wanted to help her mother with breakfast. She made orange juice and even put bread in the toaster and got out the butter so that her mother could sleep for a few more minutes.

When her mother got up half an hour later, she was very surprised and moved to see the breakfast on the dining table. She gave Tammy a big hug.

"Thank you, Tammy. You really are mother's little helper now, aren't you?"
