Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I learned lessons from his experiences. He always told me, “You should have goals like climbing the mountain.” Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed, we couldn’t have enough time to spend together because my father was very busy. I really got a lot from the mountain-climbing. It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience.

Once we climbed a very high mountain. It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the flowers and trees, and the birds’ singing. But as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to quit climbing, but my father said to me, “You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can’t see it before you reach the top. Only there can you see all of the nice things, which is just like your life.”

In America, drivers’ education is part of the regular high school curriculum. Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver’s education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.

The course is divided into two parts: class time for learning laws and rules and driving time to practice driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students study the basic traffic laws from a text to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone who wants to get a driver’s license.

Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel and practice starting. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two hours each time. So each student gets half an hour driving time per outing.

Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes(剎車), one on the driver's side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. So if the student driver should run into difficulties, the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a sign that reads: STUDENT DRIVER. That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution because the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experienced.

After the student has passed the driver's education course and reached the suitable age to drive (this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), they can go to a the state office to take their driver's test, which is made up of an eye examination, a written test, and a road test. The person must pass all the three tests in order to be given a driver's license.

1.We can infer that the students are required to ________ in their whole driving practice.

A. go out driving for 12 times B. spend at least six hours driving

C. drive for two-hour blocks of time D. get half an hour driving

2.In America, the driver's course mentioned above is ________.

A. considered as part of the advanced education

B. given to anyone wanting to get a driver's license

C. carried on at the same time as other courses

D. required of all the students of Grade 2 in high schools

3.To prevent accidents, a driver's ED car ________.

A. has a sign inside it B. has two sets of brakes

C. is big enough to hold five persons D. can't run very fast

4.Which of the following does not agree with the requirements for the students wanting to get their driver's license?

A. They must be 16 years of age.

B. They should go to have their driver's course.

C. They must have their eyes examined.

D. They ought to do well in their driver's course.

5.The underlined word “caution” in paragraph 4 means ________.

A. being brave B. courage C. being careful D. patience

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling. Recycling in the homes is very important. However, having to recycle often means we already have more products than we need. We are just dealing with the results of thatover-consumptionin the greenest way, but it would be much better if we did not bring so many goods home.

The total amount of packaging(外包裝) has increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It is 1/3 of a home’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets, food products are packaged twice with plastic and paper. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of land because of this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Besides, the plastic from the package puts some creatures in danger, especially birds and fish.

Recycling helps, but the recycling itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such waste in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, few of them have the idea that this cannot continue. For example, supermarkets should encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have been used to the idea that packaging means excellence while anything unpackaged is of poor condition. This is especially true of food. But this idea has spread to other products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how many unnecessary goods are collected. We need to face the waste of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

1.What does the underlined word “over-consumption” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A. Using too much packaging.

B. Recycling too many wastes.

C. Buying more products than needed.

D. Making more products than necessary.

2.Which of the following damage of over packaging is NOT mentioned?

A. It may waste land.

B. It may pollute the food.

C. It may do harm to the living things.

D. It may make the green house effect worse.

3.According to the passage, which of the following is true about recycling?

A. It leads to a waste of land.

B. It means burning packaging for energy.

C. It is the only solution to the greenhouse effect.

D. It helps reduce the harm caused by too much packaging.

4.Why do people prefer packaged products?

A. Supermarkets encourage them.

B. People care more about packaging.

C. It is necessary for all the products to have package.

D. People think unpackaged products are of poor condition.

5.What does the writer tell us in the last paragraph?

A. Fighting waste is difficult.

B. People don’t waste any more.

C. People only recycle necessary goods now.

D. We should continue our consumer culture.
