20、 All living things on the earth need other living things to live. Nothing lives alone. Most animals must live in a group, and even a plant grows close together with others of the same kind. Sometimes one living thing kills another, one eats and the other is eaten. Each kind of life eats another kind of life in order to live, and together they form a food chain. Some food chains are simple, while others are not. But all food chains begin with the sun, and all food chains become broken up if one of them disappears.
All life needs sunlight to live on. But only plants can use sunlight directly. Plants are “factories”. They make food from sunlight, water and things in the soil and air.
Plants feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun’s energy after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly.
What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits and so on. We watched a display show. It was exciting. We also eat meat and drink milk. But men often break up the food chain. They kill wild animals. They also make rivers, lakes and seas dirty. When these rivers, lakes and seas are polluted, the fish in them can not be eaten. If men eat the fish, they will get strange diseases.
Each form of life is linked to all others. Breaking the links puts all life in danger.

17、 Are you carrying too much on your back at school? You’re not alone. Back experts in the United States are worried that young students are having back and neck problems as a result of carrying too much in their back-packs.
“It hurts my back when I run.”said Oberlin Reyes, a student in Virginia. “It’s hard to get up the stairs with my backpack, because it’s too heavy.”
Oberlin is among the students whose backpacks were overweighed in a recent study.
They had regular backpacks with two straps to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads had switched to rolling backpacks.
Shirley Park, whose backpack weighed 10 kilograms, said she changed to a rolling backpack because she was starting to have back pain.
How much is too much? Experts say students should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their own body weight.
A few students had one suggestion to lighten the load: less homework.
P.S.
Doctor’s suggestions:
(1)Lighten the load. Clean out binders and take home only the books you need that night.
(2)Wide straps are better. They send out the weight over your shoulders more evenly. And be sure to wear both straps rather than hang the pack over one shoulder.
