21、To Zhang Hui
Southern Street No. 4
Shamian Island
Guangzhou
China 510133
Thursday 9 May 1995
Dear Zhang Hui,
We have now been in Australia for five days. The plane trip was great. The weather here is lovely! People complain that it is too hot but it is not nearly as hot here as it's been at home lately. We were supposed to stay at a hotel in the city but we moved to Bondi Beach, which is 8 kilometers from the city. It takes half an hour by bus from the centre of Sydney. We’ve been swimming every day-- the water here is so refreshing. Yesterday we went to Taronga Park Zoo which is only a short ferry ride across Sydney Harbour. We saw koalas(樹袋熊) and kangaroos (袋鼠) and many other Australian animals. You wouldn't believe it, but while I was eating a sandwich for lunch a kookaburra (笑翠鳥) swooped down and stole my sandwich from the table right in front of me. We all laughed although it left me feeling a little bit hungry all afternoon. From the chair lift we had a close up view of the magnificent giraffes (長頸鹿). The animals in that zoo certainly have a great view of Sydney. From the elephant enclosure you can see the Harbour Bridge, the beautiful Opera House and the city of Sydney gleaming (若隱若現(xiàn)地) across the harbour. Tomorrow we are traveling to Greenville to stay with my host family. I miss you and will write again soon. With love from your friend,
Liu Mei

20、Is there a something strange high up in the world's tallest mountains? If so, is it a big bear? Is it a monkey? Or is it a kind of man?
No one knows. This mystery (迷) has puzzled (困惑) the world for years.
In 1887, a mountain climber found large footprints (腳印) in the snow. They looked like the footprints of a very large man. But men don't walk without shoes in the snow!
In 1996, another climber saw more than footprints. Far off, he saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran very quickly.
Fifteen years later, newspapers, had new stories about the "something". A mountain climber said he had seen the "snow man" walk slowly across the snow, far below him. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on, more and more people had stories to tell. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back pictures of large footprints. The pictures showed clearly that the snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an ape (猿) man? The mystery grew! And the mystery keeps growing. Someday we may find out just what it is that makes the large footprints.
