The dingo is a kind of Australia's wild dog. No one is certain to tell us where it comes from, but scientists now believe that it is related to Asian and Middle Eastern wolves. They probably arrived in Australia between 3,500 and 4,000 years ago, and were brought there by Asian sailors. Dingos generally communicate over long distances with howls (嚎叫) like wolves.
The dingos have short hair. Their color looks a little red, yellow to brown, and seldom to black with white points on the feet and the end of the tail. The dingo has a bushy(濃密) tail, strong paws, an alert (機(jī)警) head and upright ears.
Dingos are more active at night, sunrise and sunset than in the middle of the day. This is similar to the animals they hunt and eat. Dingos eat a wide variety of animals, but the most of their diet (more than 50 per cent) comes from kangaroos. A dingo's diet also includes rabbits, rats and mice. Domestic (馴養(yǎng))animals is not an important source of food for dingos----it is said that domestic stock only makes up between 1% and 7% of their diet.
Dingos are social animals, living in family groups, which defend their land and sometimes hunt together. They have a home range (范圍)of up to 8,000 hectares(公頃), but their daily movements take in only a small part of that range. They spend a few days in one place and then move to another, then traveling around their whole range in the end.
People usually control the dingo by trapping, shooting, poisoning(毒) and fencing. The dingo fence (籬笆)which runs through South Australia, along the South Australia and Queens land borders(界), and through central Queens land, is the word's longest fence.

Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.
One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personal worth(價(jià)值觀). The self-respect is the basis of good mental(心理) health. A teenager, who is often made to feel stupid and unworthy, compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will not be so sure and will be so afraid of failing that he or she won' t try at all. Of course, they should be corrected when they do wrong. This is the way children learn. But the criticisms (批評) should be balanced with praises with a smile and a kiss. No child is ever too old to be cuddled(擁抱)
Parents owe their children firm guidance(指導(dǎo)). It is frightening for a teenager to feel that he is in charge of himself (自理); it's like being in a car that can’t be stopped.
Parents owe their children privacy (隱私)and respect for their personal belongings. This means not taking things without permission, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through purses, pockets, and drawers.
If a mother feels that she must read her daughter's diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be quite bad.
Parents owe their children a set of solid values (道德準(zhǔn)則) around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child, who is lied to, will lie. A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A teenager who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.
No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.

A. Parents can read their children’s diary without their permission.
B. Children can’t be criticized at all by their parents

3. Which is the best way to let the children know the value of life?
A. To set a good example for the children to follow.
B. To talk more with the children.
C. To correct the children's mistakes in time.
D. To teach the children to respect others' rights.

A. not mention the mistake at all

Parts of China had the heaviest rainfall this year in its history, killing more than 400 people. Some 770 people have been killed by flooding in South Asia. And it is a similar story in the world.
More than 50 people were killed in Sudan. Hundreds had to leave homes in northern England as the water rose. In Colombia, houses disappeared under rising floodwaters and some 50,000 people had to move to safe places.
As people fought the worst floods in history, experts warn such things may become more often because of climatic change and that lessons still need to be learnt to reduce the losses(減少).
Floods may leave fewer deaths than earthquakes, wars or tsunamis(海嘯) ,and the world pay less attention to it, but they can cause similar damage(毀壞).
Climate change could make the problem worse. Many scientists say the world is warming because of carbon emissions(碳排出量)from human activities, making weather more unpredictable(不可測).
Experts say that flood defenses(防洪) have made people feel no safety, especially in the most developed countries. "With floods, the first thing to learn is that you cannot stop them," said Professor Graham Chapman at Lancaster University. "You have to have a society that learns to live with them."
In 2005 Hurricane (颶風(fēng))Katrina visited New Orleans, USA, and caused great losses. It showed that even a developed country like the United States could not face the flood if it was not fully prepared.
"Flood plains(平原)are not bad places to live," said Nottingham University's Thorne. "Most of the world's great civilizations (文明) grew up along rivers -- people are always going to live there. But you have to have plans for flooding."
1. From the first two paragraphs we know that ____.
A. there were serious floods all over the world this year
B. China had the heavier rainfall than other countries this year
C. many people in England were killed because the water rose
D. worldwide floods caused deaths in most countries this year
2. Experts think that lessons about floods still need learning because_______.
A. people pay no attention to flooding
B. more floods may appear
C. floods will cause similar damage
D. floods will be the main losses
3. According to Professor Graham Chapman, flood defenses________.
A. can keep people safe
B. can influence climate change
C. are not able to stop floods
D. let people pay less attention to floods
4. Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans caused great losses partly because___.
A. the United States is a developed country
B. Americans didn't learn flooding lessons.
C. people knew nothing about flooding
D. people didn't prepare fully to face Hurricane Katrina
5.What did Thorn think of plains along rivers?
A. It’s dangerous to live there
B. It is comfortable to live and work there.
C. The places fit for humans to live
D. They are centers of culture in the world
