Industrial pollution is not only a problem for the countries of Europe and North America but also an extremely serious problem in some developing countries.【小題1】They want to introduce industries, and so they put few controls on the industries which cause pollution.
Cubatao, an industrial town of 85 000 people in Brazil, is an example of the connection between industrial development and pollution. In 1954, Cubatao had no industry.【小題2】 The people of the town are suffering from the poisonous matter in their environment.【小題3】Birth shortcomings are extremely common. Among children and adults, lung problems are sometimes twelve times more common in Cubatao than in other places.
【小題4】However,  these laws are not strict enough. It is cheaper for companies to take no notice of the laws and pay the fines(罰款) than to buy the expensive equipment that will reduce the pollution. It is clear, therefore, that economic growth is more important to the government than to the health of the workers.
However, the responsibility does not completely lie with the Brazilian government. 【小題5】A number of the factories in the town are owned by large companies from France, Italy, and the U. S. They are doing things in Brazil that they would not be able to do at home. If they caused the same amount of pollution at home, they would be severely punished or even put out of business.

A.So the bad effects can be clearly seen.
B.It is true that Brazil has laws against pollution,
C.For these countries, economic growth is a very important aim.
D.The pollution in Cubatao is caused by the changes of the companiess.

Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.

Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (撲), locking its jaws on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.

“This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report.

He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”.

Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three to four days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria (細菌) on the teeth of the crocodile.

With changing times and   47  influences, youngsters no longer know what is interpreted as disrespect to elders. Youngsters should   48  express their views and if there are arguments, they should not   49  their voices.

If there is no space on sofas or chairs, children will immediately   50  their places, and sit on the carpet. In buses and trains, youngsters are   51  to give up their places to older people. This is not a   52  of who has more rights. It is simply that those who are younger have the strength to bear   53 , or tolerate unpleasantness, so it is natural to show consideration to those who are older and perhaps at a   54  disadvantage.

When you do simple things as a mark of respect, elders become   55  that youngsters care for them, and they respond with affection and kindness.
