Most people in the U.S. speak only one language, English. They do not learn to speak a second language. Languages are taught in high schools, but very few students learn to speak well. Why don't Americans speak other languages?

First, most Americans never travel to other countries. The United States is a very large country. Americans can travel a long distance and don’t leave the United States. They do not need to learn a second language.

Second, one of the countries next to the United States is Canada. Most people in Canada speak English. Some Americans live near Canada. They travel there often. But they do not have to learn a new language.

Third, many people in other parts of the world speak English. If Americans travel to other countries, they can speak English there, too.

Some Americans think that it is a mistake to speak only English. They believe it is very important to learn a second language. Maybe someday other Americans will agree. Then more people will speak a second language in the United States.

閱讀理解。
George was very stingy (吝嗇的). He hated spending money.
Whenever he had to buy something, he always argued about the price and tried to bargain (討價還價),
even for the cheapest things.
If he wanted to buy a bottle of coke, for example, and the shopkeeper asked for $2, George would say,
"Make it $1.90 and I'll buy it."
Sometimes the shopkeeper agreed to reduce (降低) their prices a little. "What's ten cents?" they asked
themselves."If it makes this man happy, then it won't hurt me very much."
In this way George saved a few cents here and a few cents there, and by the end of the year, he had
saved several hundred dollars.
One day he had a very bad toothache and had to go to the dentist. The dentist looked at the tooth and
said, "This tooth will have to come out. It's too damaged (損壞的) to save."
"How much do you charge (要價) to take out a tooth?" George asked.
"Forty dollars." the dentist said. "Forty dollars!" George thought this was much too expensive.
"How long will it take you to pull out the tooth?" he asked.
"About two minutes," the dentist said.
George could not believe what he was hearing. "Forty dollars for two minutes' work!" he shouted.
"That's robbery (搶劫)."
The dentist smiled. "You're right," she said. "Thank you for telling me. I'll pull your tooth out very slowly.
What if I take half an hour?"
