Three—quarters of a million tourists flock to the white beaches every year, but this booming industry has come at a price.Poisonous smoke rising from open fires, rubbish made up of plastic bottles, packets…it’S a far cry from the white sands, clear waters and palm trees that we associate with the Maldives(馬爾代夫),the paradise island holiday destination set in the Indian Ocean.
of its 200 inhabited islands, which are spread across an area of"35,000 square miles,99 are good resorts(旅游勝地).So many tourists come every year, more than double the local population.Of these, over l 00,000 travel from the U K.The capital,Mal6,is four times more densely populated than London.Given these facts,it’S hardly surprising that the Maldives has a waste disposal problem.
Y ears a90,when the tourists left, the government had to deal with a stream of rubbish.Their solution was to turn one of the islands into a dumping ground.Four miles west of Mal6 is the country’s dumping ground,Thilafushi. What you are seeing here is a view of the Maldives on which no honeymooners will ever clap eyes. Each visitor produces 3.5 kg of waste per day.The country dumps more than 330 tons of rubbish on the island every day.
Now,since many waste boats, fed up with waiting seven hours or more, directly offload their goods into the sea,the government of the Maldives has banned the dumping of waste on the island.S0,the waste boats ship the rubbish to India instead.

C.No honeymooners are willing to visit the Maldives. |
D.Waste on islands will be offloaded directly into the sea. |
A.To attract more tourists to the Maldives. |
B.To state the waste disposal problem in the Maldives. |
C.To call on us to protect the environment. |
D.To explain the causes of pollution in the Maldives. |
With alarming regularity, we read about oil tankers having accidents near land and the terrible consequences of the oil spills(泄露) on people, nature, and the environment.
Millions of dollars have been used in developing special chemicals to help dismiss the spills and to clean up the animals, beaches, and land spoiled by the oil.Unfortunately, when many of these chemicals are used, more damage is caused to the environment, especially to lives in the sea.
Of all of today’s environmental disasters, an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious.Although oil is poisonous, it is a natural material. In the end, it breaks down naturally. There are, of course, long-term effects, but it is usually more serious in the short term.
Nature by itself works better than chemical materials, but when there is a spill we demand that governments act immediately with as much hi-tech knowledge as possible. In 1967 the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Sicily Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000 tones of oil into the ocean. If you go there today, you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever happened.
Governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage.Interestingly, the biggest companies in the world produce cars, and the next biggest supply the gasoline to make them run!
We should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil.Governments should be encouraging research into new technologies, such as cars run by solar power(太陽能), electricity, hydrogen, and so on.Much of this research has, in the past, been held back by the oil, gas, and coal.
If the world’s millions of cars were 10% more efficient(高效的)— and the industry could easily produce cars at least twice as efficient — we would need many fewer tankers crossing the oceans each year.If this happened, the risks of oil spills would be reduced, and the air we breathe would be cleaner and fresher, too.
【小題1】What is the passage mainly talking about?
A.Oil tanker accidents. | B.Oil spills pollution. |
C.What oil pollution is. | D.How to reduce oil pollution. |
A.By giving a description. | B.By making an argument. |
C.By giving an example. | D.By drawing a diagram. |
A.Transportation depending more on oil. |
B.Poisonous oil breaking down naturally. |
C.Millions of tons of oil spilling into the sea. |
D.More environmental damage being caused. |
A.We should develop new technologies to cut oil use |
B.Tankers should not be allowed to sail near the coastlines. |
C.We should build safer oil tankers in the near future. |
D.Countries should build more oil pipelines under the sea. |
The idea of light pollution has developed with the increase of lights in cities. In many areas, this light makes it difficult or impossible to observe stars and planets in the night sky.
There are a number of reasons why light pollution is important. One has become clear at the Mount Wilson Observatory near Los Angeles, California. Today, light from Los Angeles makes the night sky above Mount Wilson very bright. It is no longer an important reasearch center because of light pollution.
Light pollution threatens to reduce the scientific value of research telescoples in other important observatories. They include Lick Observatory near San Jose, California and Yerkes Observatory near Chicago, Illionis.
Light pollution is the result of wasted energy. Bright light that shines into the sky is not being used to provide light where it is needed on Earth. Poorly designed lighting causes a great deal of light pollution. Lights that are brighter than necessary also cause light pollution.
Most people in America are surprised to find out that they are able to see our own galaxy(星系),the Milky Way, with their own eyes. But about threefourths of Americans cannot see the Miky Way because of manmade light.
Objects in the night sky are resources that provide everyone with wonder. But light pollution threatens to prevent those wonderful sights from being seen.
【小題1】Light pollution usually occurs________.
A.in cities | B.in the country |
C.in wild areas | D.in developing countries |
A.Mount Wilson Observatory is the most important one in America. |
B.Light pollution affects observatories only. |
C.In the dark night people can observe the sky clearly. |
D.Astronomers can observe the stars clearly by the lights of the cities. |
A.children | B.grownups | C.students | D.observatories |
As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, businesses, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand these lights. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets sage. The problem is that researchers are finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.
Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my town, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attracted meteor shower(流星雨). The area was short of homes, street lights and traffic. If I did that today, I wouldn’t be able to see the meteor shower as well, and I would surely be run over by a car.
Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide pollution. If you’ve ever taken a flight at night, the view is beautiful, but you must remember that all the light you see is wasted electricity. The crew of the space shuttles see an even bigger picture of how extensive the wasted electricity is worldwide.
Additionally, electricity needs to be generated, and the generation of electricity creates pollution by giving off greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.
Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when they crash into highly lighted buildings, as they become puzzled by the light. It has been long known that tiny sea turtle hatchlings become lost and follow lights on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.
Fortunately, light pollution is one of the easiest sources of pollution that can be corrected without a negative effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce your contribution to light pollution.
【小題1】The author tells the story in the second paragraph mainly to _________.
A.remember the past beauty of the town. |
B.stress the advantages of less pollution |
C.show the great changes of the town |
D.prove the bad effects of light pollution |
A.to try to reduce unnecessary light. |
B.not to ignore the beauty around. |
C.to set proper light for animals |
D.not to destroy the animal’s living conditions. |
A.Light pollution is difficult to deal with. |
B.Light pollution is a threat to some animals. |
C.Light pollution has nothing to do with global warming |
D.Astronauts can’t see clearly in space due to light pollution. |
A.The author’s contribution to light pollution |
B.Other sources of light pollution |
C.Ways of reducing light pollution |
D.More bad effects of light pollution |
