閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

Thousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets . The tickets cost only $0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $90 million. That was the second largest lottery jackpot(積累獎金)in history.

More than 87 million tickets were bought for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80. The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million. But that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were selling at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.

Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action. Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have.

But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized gambling. Some critics note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.

Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice(惡習(xí)), under the name of social progress. No matter whether you regard state lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.

58. In just one hour in the last few days , the Pennsylvania lottery sold tickets totaling       .

Recent studies have recognized four major global environmental risks: chemical rain, ozone depletion(臭氧損耗), deforestation(采伐森林) and the greenhouse effect. On the whole, thanks to technological changes, people now tend to move toward warmer regions in North America and Europe. Climate warming will probably be a benefit to Alaska, which is America's least productive state in Gross National Product(GNP)per square mile.

Studies of the effect of global warming on the United States and other developed regions find that the most affected areas are those dependent on unmanaged ecosystems--on naturally occurring rainfall , run--off and temperatures, and the extremes of these variables. Agriculture, forestry and coastal activities fall into this kind.

Most economic activity in industrialized countries, however, depends very little on the climate. Intensive--care units of hospitals, communications, heavy manufacturing and microelectronics(微電子)are among the sectors likely to be unaffected by climatic change. In selecting whether to set up in, say, Hong Kong or in Warsaw, few businesses will consider temperature a weighty factor.

Greenhouse warming would have little effect on America's national output. About 3% of American GNP originates in climate--sensitive sectors such as farming and forestry. Another 10% comes from sectors only modestly(中等的) sensitive-- energy, water systems, property and construction. For the largest share , 87%, comes from sectors, including most services, that are hardly affected by climatic change.

63. Climate warming will probably be _____________.

A. a help to Alaska                B. a disaster to Alaska

C. a challenge to Alaska            D. a disadvantage to Alaska

64. Which of the following activities must consider climate as an important factor?

A. Microelectronics.      B. Communications.      C. Banking.    D. Farming.

65. In industrialized countries, what businesses are almost NOT affected by climate changes?

A. Water systems.   B. Energy and property.    C. Services.        D. Coastal activities.

66. The passage is mainly about _______

A. environment protection                  B. climate changing

C. economics                           D. environment and economy

Just 30 minutes of walking can immediately lift the mood of depressed (抑郁的) patients, giving them the same quick pick-me-up they may be seeking from cigarettes , caffeine or binge eating, a small study found.

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that people suffering from depression who walked for 30 minutes reported feeling more energetic for up to an hour after completing the exercise.

Those patients and another group that sat quietly for 30 minutes both reported reductions in bad feelings such as tension (緊張), depression, anger and tiredness. But only the group that exercised said they felt good, according to the study published in the December issue of the journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

"The past research has found that exercise, along with the help of medicine, can help people overcome depression," said John Bartholomew, a lead researcher.

However, Bartholomew is among the first to show that exercise can have a good effect right away.

The study involved 40 people between the ages of 18 and 55. All were recently suffering from major depressive disorder without taking medicine, and did not regularly exercise.

Twenty patients were asked to exercise for 30 minutes, while the others sat quietly for the same amount of time.

The good mood effects from walking were sizable, lifting their feelings of energy to near-normal levels. But this kind of feeling was short, returning to pre-exercise levels within an hour.

"For people who are very depressed, that may not be something I'm really going to hang my hat on," said Dr. Erik Nelson, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. "But for patients who are less depressed, exercise may lessen feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, "he said.

67. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. It is one of Bartholomew's first discoveries that walking does good to depressed patients.

B. Bartholomew is among the first to find walking can help people overcome depression.

C. Exercise was first found to be helpful to depressed people by Bartholomew.

D. Depressed patients can feel good immediately after a certain amount of exercise.

68. “Those patients” in paragraph 3 refers to the patients who ________.

A. were used to regular exercise without medicine

B. were used to sitting rather than exercising

C. took 30 minutes of walking in the study

    D. sat quietly for 30 minutes in the study

69. The underlined phrase "hang my hat on "in the last paragraph most probably means _______.

    A. depend on   B. discuss about    C. look into         D. live on

70. We can conclude from the passage that __________.

A. only 30 minutes of walking will do to remove people's depression

B. a certain amount of exercise can soon reduce people's depression but it doesn't last long

C. the good effect of exercise is great enough to replace that of medicine

D. without exercise, depressed patients will never be able to recover

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job.     71     .

So, you have to give a speech―and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble(結(jié)結(jié)巴巴) over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”

Cheep up!     72     . Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly.      73      . Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief.      74     . And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.

If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet?       75     .

        A. It doesn’t have to be that bad.

        B. Take several deep breaths before your speech.

        C. This article gives some advice on how to give a good speech.

          參考范文

        Boys and girls,

We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly and wisely. First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks. It’s unnecessary and it’s not important at all. We needn’t care about it. It is one’s inner beauty that matters. Second, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and classmates. Facing this, we can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding. Some of us have fewer friends. I think being open-minded and friendly will do you good. Third, we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Actually we can encourage ourselves to work efficiently, full of determination. Last, some of us don’t have much pocket money, so they feel unhappy. Isn’t it strange? So long as we have some, that’s enough. And we can learn to spend money!

        That’s all. Thank you.
